Spider-Man Musical Budget "Out of Control"

As if this fiasco doesn't have "bomb" written all over it, the director in charge of the Spider-Man Musical has spent over $40 million dollars, and reportedly is going through $1 million a week. Marvel, call your office and dump this embarassment.

Broadway insiders say Julie Taymor is out of control on the set—er, rehearsal studio—of the upcoming musical adaptation of Spider-Man. The projected budget has soared to $40 million so far, with sources telling the Posts's Michael Riedel, "She doesn't care what it costs. Does not care at all. Her attitude is: It's for the art, and you don't question artists." To be sure, with music by U2's Bono and the Edge and direction from the Tony-winning Taymor, Spider-Man could easily be the most fabulous piece of, um, art on Broadway since Capeman. But Riedel predicts that with a weekly running cost of $1 million, the show would "have to run about 8,000 years" to break even. Producers are supposedly eying the big Hilton Theatre for a 2009 opening—they just need the current occupant, Young Frankenstein, to admit defeat.

Funny that these idiots picked the one thing that the fans complained about the most about the last movie and designed a whole theatrical concept around it, as if those same people were suddenly going to go to see two hours of what they hated in the first place, or that people that go to the theatre will "lower" themselves to watch something based on a comic book. The whole thing just seems so stupid because really who the hell were they aiming for as a audience?

I'm a HUGE theatre buff...I went through 3 years of drama classes in high school...and it's not just wussy crap...it's HARD work. It's not just the acting part. It's the building of the sets, moving couches that weight 250 pounds from a storage loft that has nothing but a ladder to get up there. It's going up to the catwalk where the rail that's supposed to keep you from falling over is about to give itself while one of the ellipsoidal light's screw comes loose and slips you catch it almost falling w/ it (which is about a 200 foot drop). It's figuring out the best light plot and making sure you don't electrocute someone or roast them with light intensity. It's the sound guy making sure everything is ok. Theatre work, although fun, is a tad dangerous...and it's going to be my minor in college, my major is going to be film.

I've said all that to say this. I love Julie Taymor's work, she's really done a lot of great projects, most notably Across the Universe.

But she's completely out of control on this. And while i respect her work and artistry. I'd say i'm inclined to agree that Spider-man on Broadway is NOT the way to go.
Not only does it have disaster written all over it, her blatant disregard for how much it's costing just makes it much more worse.

She needs to smarten up and budget herself. NO show should cost $1million a WEEK. Good Lord, that's just WAY too much.

So, as much as i love her work, I think Julie Taymor has finally gone over the deep end.

WOW, sounds like a real stinker. Hey maybe it'll put an end to Julie Taymor's over-valued artsy Set designs. With all the money she's soaking up you'd think they'd give someone else a chance, for Cryinoutloud! She probably knows it's a terrible idea, so she's milking it for all it's worth.
