SPIDER-MAN Star Tom Holland On Getting Too Used To "The Marvel Machine" And "Safety Blanket Of Spider-Man"

While speaking about what he hopes to do next in his career, Tom Holland explained why he wants to work in more projects like The Crowded Room and move away from the "safety blanket of Spider-Man."

We know that Spider-Man 4 is in the early stages of development, and Tom Holland is expected to return as Peter Parker/Spider-Man. But if recent comments from the actor are any indication, we probably shouldn't expect him to make too many more appearances as the iconic web-slinger.

Holland was asked what he sees himself doing next during an interview with THR, and he indicated that he'd much prefer to work on projects that challenge him, like his recent Apple TV+ series The Crowded Room, after feeling that he's become too used to the "safety blanket of Spider-Man."

"I want to do things that scare me, things that make me uncomfortable. When you do what we do, you have to be comfortable with being uncomfortable. This show is a perfect example of that. Ben is consistently telling me, if you don’t commit, they won’t believe you. The reason I wasn’t committing is because I was afraid. I’ve never done anything like this before. I got so used to the Marvel machine and the safety blanket of Spider-Man, feeling like I was protected. So, doing something like this was incredibly scary, but because it was so scary, it was so fulfilling and so rewarding. Going forward, if there’s something that I feel like I can’t do, I want to do that one. Playing a sort of stupid English doofus is not what I want to do because that’s my life, right?"

So, could Spider-Man 4 mark the end of Holland's tenure as the wall-crawler?

Spider-Man: No Way Home concluded on a bittersweet note for the hero, who gave up his best friend and the love of his life in order to prevent the catastrophic fallout of Doctor Strange's botched spell. Peter ultimately decided not to reconnect with MJ and Ned, and instead focus on his crime-fighting career as Spider-Man without having to worry about the well-being of his loved ones.

In a way, this would have served as a fitting send-off for Holland's version of the character, but the movie's massive success almost guaranteed a follow-up. Another solo movie aside, we can't imagine Holland won't play a part in at least one of the next big MCU event movies, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and/or Avengers: Secret Wars.

What do you think? Would you be okay with Holland hanging up the web-shooters after his next outing as Spider-Man? If so, which actor would you most like to see take over the role? Drop us a comment down below.

I get his point but I do hope we see him play Peter for a bit longer….

I have liked his version overall and now that the somewhat extended origin is out of the way, I want to see him properly be Spider Man so it would be a shame if he’s done post Multiverse saga.

Anyway I am interested to see his projects outside the MCU , especially the Fred Astaire biopic he’s attached to (still need to see The Crowded Room too).

@TheVisionary25 - That biopic is taking a bit too long to happen.

@TheVisionary25 - Yeh, I get his point so hope he takes on challenges in acting on other projects but do hope we get a full second trilogy at least doing a college years and starting out with his civy job arc before going anywhere.

During that time hopefully Sony will give full rights to Marvel for Jessica Drew (they don't own the human personna name, just do whith her spider woman side) to take over or make a deal for MCU to use Miles in live action if they drag Spider-man across to their villainverse (rather than just using Garfield).

Want at least one film with a certain F4 character alongside Peter before he quits the role or swings off to the Sonyverse as well as one alongside the MCU Kingpin and DD.

If you want to simply cash a check then that's fine, but it's apparent that these movies are made to simply pass the time nowadays. Downey got out, Ruffalo got out, it seems everyone else is still spinning their wheels. Then again you have to take risks, and have talented filmmakers to challenge you

@MasterMix - I actually really enjoyed that movie. It had concepts in there ripe with potential. But I heard it wasn't received well. So likely no sequel or spin off

When he gets the RDJ money, that safety blanket will feel just right.

This arrogant little SOB was all gung-ho when he was a nobody (and trust me aside from Billy Elliot the musical, he was a nobody) when he was cast in 2015.

Aside from Spider-Man, what else has he done notable that’s connected with people? I don’t hear people gushing about the crowded room, and although it made decent money, not like people are fondly remembering Uncharted.

Word to the wise little man: Unlike Downey (whom had a legacy prior to Iron Man regardless of the positive and negative) or Ruffalo; you aren’t on par with them. Hell, you aren’t even where Tobey and Andrew are. You give up Spidey, you give up a lot more than a safety net. Just keep that in mind.

@kg8817 - ...wtf is wrong with you? He said nothing bad about marvel. He literally just said he wants to do something new, outside his comfort zone.

@kg8817 - Garfield you can argue being overall more well-known/acclaimed actor than Holland outside of Spider-Man (although, I personally find him hella overrated), but what roles/movies is Maguire known for outside of his Spider-Man trilogy? At least *some* people might be able to tell you "I guess Holland did some low-budet direct-to-streaming dramas and Uncharted between his Marvel movies", while Maguire is only known for Spider-Man and he has been longer in the business than Holland.

And this is no way a jab at Maguire, just a neutral observation.

@FinnishDude - There you go my young Padawan! https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001497/

He actually had a long and decent career before Spider-Man movies. It doesn't have to be all flashy and popcorn FOTM flicks. After those Spider-Man movies tho, he slowed down a bit but still done some good movies. By the looks of it, he's preferred good scripts throughout his career rather than majority of Superhero crap.

Apophis71 - 12/12/2023, 4:27 AM
@TheOtherOn - Your comparing someone who was almost 30yrs old and American when we first saw him as Spiderman to someone cast in the role whilst a teen and British so had roughly a decade less time to have a back catalogue of projects?

However from the Maguire list on that of known for only one was after him being Peter Parker and that was back in 2009 (and I'll be honest don't recall ever hearing about it let alone watchin).
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 12/12/2023, 5:24 AM
@kg8817 - He isn't complaining and how many are ever known as actors by the age of 19 esp if not American thus normaly have to get a name in their own country before any chance of having Hollywood like fame. However how much chance has he had to do much outside of Marvel when the entire industry was shut down str8 after Endgame for basicaly 2yrs then shut down again for most of this year due to strikes.

He aint even 30 and knows the Sony/Marvel deal can end at any moment and wants to have a challenging/satisfying long career doing what he loves, acting, what is wrong with expressing that and wanting to take advantage whilst doors are open to do so to pursue that? This does not equate to being ungrateful or dissing ANYTHING, and more saying he does not want to squander the opportunities he has thanks to a role he has become comfortable, famous and wealthy playing and there is nothing wrong with that.
TheOtherOn
TheOtherOn - 12/12/2023, 11:28 PM
@Apophis71 - I am not comparing them, only if you actually read and got the point... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I was responding to Maguire being a nobody outside of Spider-Man movies. And of course after all these years, that's what most of the people remember him NOW but that wasn't the case back in the day. It's the same thing like RDJ as Tony Stark or Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow just a couple of examples.

This sort of "they are famous for X/Y/Z" comes and goes/changes with generations I guess. Most of the people think of Keanu as John Wick now a days but I call him Neo: The One and pretty sure many remember his even earlier roles (which I do too) like from Speed, Bill & Ted, Point Break etc..

@TheOtherOn - TBH Was more bouncing of your post of the IMDB to primarily reply and in relation to @kg8817 intitial post very much on the attack and compare.

However, yes, you are correct an actor with stages of success can be known for different things by differing generations or in some cases a role ccan be so big prior success if overlooked or forgotten.

It is never however very fair to attack as the op did on the line of 'you were a nobody' when they are still in the middle of their first Hollywood role when they would have had little ability to take on many other significant roles after being cast in it as a teen whilst comparing to others who had at least a decade of Hollywood roles first.

Bro needs to be honest with himself: Spider-Man IS HIS CAREER

His non-Spidey work is ass. Not saying he isn't talented but the depth of that talent isn't large. You can always improve and want more, but his attempts to do things outside the role have been misses. He should GRATEFUL that Spider-Man has given him a career, a name, a notoriety. Spider-Man is the reason he is even able to think about being more ambitious and wanting to do more. He used to speak more highly of the role and actually coveting it.

It is a benefit to play this character

TheVisionary25 - 12/11/2023, 12:36 PM
@GhostDog - I don’t think he even badmouthed the role or character

Honestly , recently in interviews he has seen kinda down and drained so I feel something else might be going on

I know recently he was struggling with some possible addiction issues if I’m not mistaken
JustAWaffle
JustAWaffle - 12/11/2023, 12:34 PM
I don’t think he’s ungrateful. He’s just dealing with the stigma of only being known for Spidey. I don’t think he’ll do much better than that tho.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 12/12/2023, 4:47 AM
@JustAWaffle - That and the fact the last two in the role were around 30 when cast as Peter and all these years later basicaly still only known for being Spider-man...

...Who would want there entire career to fizzle into nothing outside of one character before your even 30. Having a big well known role CAN open doors but if you don't jump on challenging opportunities when they come along can be a career killer of sorts and certainly result in being type cast too thus ONLY ever known for one role.
