Spider-Man: Three of Five Changes Made in the Costume

Spider-Man: Three of Five Changes Made in the Costume

Yesterday the Internet exploded (really, it did) with the arrival of the image of Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man. MTV's Splash Page has offered up a look at five key difference between this costume and the one that appeared in the Sam Raimi films, and we've got three of them.

1. The WEB-SHOOTERS

See those metal discs on Peter Parker's wrists? If they're mechanical web-shooters, the new franchise could be planning a major reboot of the character's history, as longtime fans know that Peter Parker's web-shooting ability originally stemmed from a pair of mechanical bracelet-like contraptions that he wore under his gloves. In the comics universe, the "webs" he shot were composed of a chemical he invented, and not a product of the radioactive spider-bite that gave him his other powers. Recent storylines in Spidey's comics universe have gone back and forth on the "organic vs. mechanical webbing" debate, with the prior movie franchise going full organic for this plot point.

Could the new films be veering back to mechanical web-shooters, or are the discs just a new element that facilitates Spidey's organic web-shooting abilities?

2. THE SYMBOL

Every iteration of Spider-Man's costume in the comic book, television, and movie worlds have always added their own unique tweak to the spider symbol on Peter Parker's chest. Sometimes it's been a wide, shoulder-to-shoulder look, other times it's been reduced to a small badge centered on the character's chest. In some cases, the symbol has stretched vertically from Peter's shoulders to his waist — which appears to be the direction they're going with this new costume.

3. THE GLOVES

Given his web-shooting requirements, Spider-Man's gloves have always been an important part of the costume. In this new iteration of the iconic red-and-blues, we not only get some silver, possibly web-shootery discs, but we also get a gauntlet that wraps around Spidey's upper forearm. I'm not sure what to think about the spiral style of the new gloves, but it definitely puts a new spin (sorry, I couldn't help it) on the old favorite.

I like that dark and gritty style!:) It gives me hopes that the villains are going to look more darker and scarier than in the Raimis movies! The costume could have been more simple but im fine with this!
The Lizard is the main villain in this, but i would like to see Kraven too! Hunting down Spidey and Lizzy!:)

I'll admit I was on the fence at first, but the more that get revealed only increases my hopes for this picture. Hope they nail the mask, and the lizard. Only time will tell.

I'm also pretty excited about hte movie. Though I must admit, that Garfield's hair is going to be a big fail!

But I'm wondering:
How come, that a guy like Peter Parker (some kinda of low esteem geek-dude in the beginning) makes such an awesome costume? I mean in the comics you can't see this fancy stuff. But I imagined that in the Spider-Man movies you see this real cool costumes which surely must be very hard to make for a guy like Parker, who probably has no skills in badass tailoring...
Sure, the whole story fantasy-stuff, but these great costumes got me thinking how he makes...(in Spider-Man 1 he only drew some sketches...)

Don't get me wrong...I'm really looking forward and am really glad, that finally all my 'heroes' from my childhood are hitting the big screen...but this costume issue just made me think....

i'm cool with the changes, while i still believe rebooting the series so soon is kind of unnecessary, i will definitely watch it with the mindset that it's just pure entertainment.

@cyanide

if the guy can create web shooters then i'm sure tailoring wouldn't be much more of a challenge haha

thanks, i just tried to think of something clever

Maybe they'll change up the storyline a bit & have him order his suit & customize it kind've like Kick-Ass? That would make a little more sense. I've got no problem with it either way though. I wish the gloves were a little more traditional and the 'belt' was there, but hell, I think this'll be fine. Garfield himself looks a lot more like Spidey than McGuire did. :)

Am convinced if nothing else Andrew Garfield's turn as peter parker will be one of the highlights of the film.

I get, judging by the uniform, this is actually Ben Reilly, this is the beggining of the "CLONE SAGA"!

As I said on the last web shooter article, Always thought the shooters were silly, even reading Spidey comics as a frakking 8 year old! Its not even what he would have used the web shooters for AFTER he became Spider-Man, if he had this great intellect and means to make something similar, or not even similar just as valuable..why didn't he do it BEFORE he was bitten? I mean how smart is that? He has the means and brains to set himself and his Aunt and Uncle up for life but only realizes it after he decides to become a superhero? That doesn't show Parker's genius level intellect, it suggests he's a [frick]ing idiot! Like it or lump it, Raimi's changes in that respect were a good thing and made the most sense.

Another way the movie can explain the web-shooter thing is maybe when Peter gets bit, aside from the powers, he's granted the inherent knowledge of how to create webbing. Why not?

@EdGross good stuff... i saw this article just didn't think of putting it up on CBM... idk why... oh well guess that's why u get the scoops...

i was just thinking guys if he modified a wet suit or something to make his suit... wouldn't he die from heat exhaustion?

i still want spidey in the MCU... this might be good... but they'll do it perfect!

I HAVE A QUESTION, IS THE COSTUME CGI?????
mkn
mkn - 1/14/2011, 5:49 AM
they didn't really have a choice, they had to make it different, to seperate it from Raimis spider-man.

i'm not going to judge it, but if they go dark, almost batman begins level, then it wont fit with the rest of this marvel movie universe.
Geo808
Geo808 - 1/14/2011, 5:51 AM
@Idoit4lolz

From what I can make out the costume has a belt, but like the gloves there seems to be sections of blue interwoven into the red. Am guessing the red belt is visible from the the back and may just have the blue segments on both sides of the front.

This is the sort of design i would make if i was spiderman in the 21st century,
you would make it more sleek looking and modern
so im actually happy about this design i think its awesome :)
Vitosal
Vitosal - 1/14/2011, 6:10 AM
i got to say it looks pretty damn good...i usually don't like change when it comes to spider-man...(i hated the fact that Raimi changed the webbing to organic) but this costume is pretty damn good. I've always wanted to see a much more grittier version of old spidey.

I also think it would be awesome if they made a series or movie of spider-man: noir...

Also, do you guys think spider-man will be part of the avengers???

i'm liking the costume, not sure about the gloves design yet.

also i hope they don't f*ck it all by ruining the mask.

If Marvel Studios handled this title, I wouldn't feel disappointed, cuz they wouldn't have messed THIS much with it.

Intruder, that's not what I'm taking about. When you buy into a fantasy world you buy into the fantasy elements. WITHIN those confines people still need to act in a realistic way and make sense relative to the world they inhabit.

i'm just grateful he doesn't fire web out of his ass like a proper spider.

the web shooters must stay.

@Ror

Did you ever watch the spiderman animated series? In there Peter says when he got bit by the spider he all of a sudden had this knowledge of how to make the webbing. If they are going with the web shooters in the movie that is how they will explain it most likely
ComicBookGoth
ComicBookGoth - 1/14/2011, 6:29 AM
im glad they're throwing in the web shooters, thats one of the things i hated about the raimi flicks.

just like in the books, peter's creation of the web shooters and the chemical are a huge part of peter parker.
it shows how intellectual he is,
as well as to show he has a brilliant scientific mind.

another thing the raimi flicks whitewashed over, his intelect.

MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 1/14/2011, 6:36 AM
^^^, like I said if he was so intelligent why didn't he invent something that would have made him a millionaire before being bitten? Raimi didn't whitewash over anything, it was perfectly clear to everyone that Parker was a genius. We didn't need to see him make web shooters.

Broken, I did watch the show but I don't remember that. I guess that could work..I just think having them organic is the best approach. There are other issues with the shooters too. Running out of webbing just when he needs it and never having spare..all that silly crap that fanboys actually seem to like! Look, sometimes source material CAN be improved upon. back when Spider-man first came out logic didn't factor into things.

rormachine: I remember somewhere in the 90's series he stated that when the spider bit him it gave him sort of idea on how to combine certain elements to make the webs and the shooters...
Vitosal
Vitosal - 1/14/2011, 6:48 AM
some sort of instinctive knowledge or something....all though that does sound silly
Knightstalker
Knightstalker - 1/14/2011, 6:48 AM
I never liked the bracelet style web shooters either. Always thought they should be organic. On the other hand, even if his bio-webbing is biodegradable, isn't he leaving DNA samples all over Manhatten?

New suit? Meh, should have gone with the Scarlett Spider suit if they were so Hell bent on change.
ManofSteel23
ManofSteel23 - 1/14/2011, 6:50 AM
Yeah web shooters ok..but i dont understand how a spider made him more inteligent to make the fluid,a spiders web comes naturally,so i dont see what the problem is with organic fluid...
i think it will be pretty corny watchin him making it in the movie...
just sayin
jaybear
jaybear - 1/14/2011, 6:57 AM
forgive my idiocy, but where is the link? i can't seem to find it.. i really need to see the last two costume changes..
and oh yeah, cool costume.. i hope they don't mess up the storyline.. reboot or whatever i just hope it isn't going to be sh!tty..
