Sony Planning Female Superhero SPIDER-MAN Spin-Off For 2017 Release

Well, the (relatively) poor BO performance of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 doesn't seem to have deterred Sony from continuing their plans for spin-off movies. Deadline report that they're planning a female hero-led flick for 2017, with a scriptwriter already in place.

Sony may have pushed their Amazing Spider-Man threequel back to 2018, but it seems they are still determined to move ahead with their planned spin-off movies, and now Deadline report that we can add another to the list: A female superhero flick, eyed for a 2017 release. Though we don't know which character it'll focus on (Black Cat seems likely given that Felicia Hardy was introduced in TASM 2), Lisa Joy Nolan (Westworld) has been hired to write the script, with Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach producing. Before that though, we'll have that Sinister Six movie we've been hearing so much about (now set for November 11, 2016) and the site have heard that it'll be Doctor Octopus rounding up the team of villains. They only speculate as to who the other members will be however. Plus, they reckon the title of the Alex Kurtzman directed Venom movie bound for 2017 will actually be Venom Carnage, suggesting that we'll be seeing the clash of the symbiotes. Which female hero do you think Sony will go with? Deadline also name-check Silver Sable, Stunner, and Spider-Woman as "strong possibilities", but that could well just be speculation.

It would have to be Spider-Girl. Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew) has no connection to Spider-Man. If assume Marvel still has the rights to her.

It could be that new character, Silk, though.

If Sony's intention is to get people to stop caring about Spider-Man movies, they are doing a good job.

Sony should just give the production rights back to Marvel and they can keep the distribution rights.

Something tells me the schedule will go as
2016- Sinister Six
2017- Female Spider Movie
2018- Amazing Spider-Man 3
2019- Venom
2020- Amazing Spider-Man 4

Andrew Garfield's only 30, by ASM3's filming he'll be 32 and I'm sure he can pull off college student then for ASM4 filming in 2018 he'd be 34 playing Peter Parker just living life outside of school. Oh the benefits of looking so damn youthful.

If this is a spin-off then it has to be Black Cat, right? There are no other female characters already in the universe...

@Ezio

I believe they mean that one character will have a redemptive story in it, so either Electro or Harry will somehow redeem themselves as a hero.

Black Cat! Adding her into this universe would add some variety to this franchise.

Wow very interesting.
Of course I'm always excited when studios diversify their content, so a female led superhero movie is amazing. Seems Sony really does want to compete with Marvel (Black Widow/possible Ms Marvel movie) and WB (Wonder Woman movie), and competition is always good.

They're smart though, women are huge consumers of film and it's been proven even this summer how much of a profitable demo they can be. So! Bring it on.

:) still intrigued as to who it will be though.
