Andrew Garfield Comments On His Spider-Man Possibly Returning To The MCU After SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME

Will Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man ever return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe? An excerpt from the film's concept art book has his response to that very question.

By MarkJulian - Jul 29, 2023 07:07 PM EST

Marvel's Spider-Man: No Way Home- The Art of the Movie doesn't officially release until August 1 but there are apparently a few early-published copies floating out in the wild, and a few excerpts have made their way online recently.

In the concept-art-focused book, Andrew Garfield is asked about whether his Peter Parker has a future in the MCU.

Garfield responded, "The story never ends… Whether we film it or not, there's a story happening in a universe somewhere, there's endless potential with this character and other iterations. So yeah, he's definitely out there doing something."

While more than a few online Spidey fans are optimistically interpreting Garfield's response as confirmation of The Amazing Spider-Man 3, we'll caution that if Garfield ever does suit back up as the wall-crawler, it will likely be in Marvel Studios' Avengers: Secret Wars, which currently has a release date of May 7, 2027.

If the film somewhat resembles the 1984 Marvel Comics crossover event of the same name, Marvel heroes from all across the universe (and maybe even the multiverse) will be assembled on Battleworld to fight to the death.

Rumors have been swirling ever since the film was announced at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2022 that everyone from Garfield and Tobey Maguire to Fox's X-Men will appear in the film as a way to one-up the 'assemble' scene from Avengers: Endgame.

Regardless, it will be a long wait to find out whether any of these rumors prove true, as the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA strike might play havoc with previously announced film release dates.

Do you think Garfield's Spider-Man will ever return to the MCU? Or do you think his appearance in No Way Home was a one-and-done deal? Let us know in the comment section below.

Got to wonder how different things would be if the stuck to the more grounded tone of the first movie, didnt swipe everything set up under the rug and jam in 3 villains into the 2nd movie

Amazing Spiderman wasnt perfect but was a good start and considering Oscorp was almost in Avengers, guessing they were considering it for the mcu

Who knows if things had gone differently maybe Andrew would have been the mcu spiderman

I love this man!!.

It’s honestly why I love seeing different takes of comic book stories across the genre because it not only keeps it fresh & exciting imo but you’ll always get atleast someone that connects with a particular version which is perfectly fine imo and it’s cool to discuss why that version connected with them moreso then other iterations even if I may disagree.

Andrew’s version of the character and his world had its merits and weaknesses for me even if it wasn’t my favorite…

I wouldn’t mind seeing him again in the role but I think NWH gave him a nice end with a measure of redemption so I’m cool with if that’s all we get from him aswell.

@TheVisionary25 - Yes it is truly a great answer.
Gotta love it.

@RealTurner - I mean, most people don't work for free... with that said, Garfield's passion for the character has always shined through

@Slotherin - I agree about his passion. I liked him in the role. But manufacturing articles from the question "would you get paid to do something again that you've already been paid to do in the past?" is a cottage industry around here.

SM NWH was excellent. But let's not forget: The Amazing SM was bad. Amazing SM was horrible.

Continuing that trash would be ridiculous.

@DocSpock - He wasn't the reason either was bad, though.

@BackwardGalaxy -

Yes and no.

He is a very good actor. He was miscast in this. Emma Stone looked perfect as a high school girl. However, Garfield looked like a 27 year old man trolling after a high school girl.(Yes, I know what their real ages were at the time.) This made things look very creepy to a lot of people.

He would have possibly made a very good adult Spider-Man, but certainly not a high school aged one.

The writing & directing were just awful on both movies, and that certainly was not his fault at all.

@DocSpock - Eh, he looked passable for a Hollywood high school senior. He looked younger than Tobey did in the first Spider-Man.

My issue with Garfield as Peter has nothing to do with Garfield's performance. I just thought Peter seemed a bit too hipster, with the skateboarding and all. I can appreciate what they were going for, but it didn't feel like Peter to me. However, I bought his relationship with Gwen much more than I bought any other romantic relationship in any Spider-Man movie. Casting hit the nail on the head in the chemistry department.

And while I wasn't sold on Garfield's Peter, I really enjoyed his portrayal of Spider-Man. He had the New York accent, was definitely a wisecracker, and the way he moved looked much like a spider. That was all pretty cool.

To this day, we haven't had a perfect live-action portrayal of both Peter and Spidey, but there's a lot I like about each iterations interpretation. I think Tom Holland best embodies Peter Parker, but I don't buy his relationship with MJ at all, and I wish there was more focus on the photographer/videographer aspect of his personality. And the lack of Uncle Ben has been tough to get my head around. Garfield's Peter has those elements, but lacked others in the personality department.

It wasn’t alway a popular opinion but I always loved him as Spider-Man even if I didn’t necessarily love his movies. That being said I think NWH is the perfect a song for his character. He got to redeem himself for Gwen, and he has a new lease on life to bring back to his own universe. Aside from him and Gwen (which was already wrapped up) there was nothing else from that universe revisiting but if there’s a multiversal equivalent to the Endgame portals scene in a future Avengers movie I do hope we see him there

TheVisionary25 - 7/29/2023, 8:42 PM
@Ha1frican - agreed

That relationship was the heart of those films.

As much as I would like to see Andrew and Tobey return, Tom hasn't been able to fully flesh out Spidey on his own. The first film he had an assist with Tony Stark. The second film he had Nick Fury. The third he had Spidey #1 and Spidey #2 not to mention Dr. Strange. He has always been a part of a team. Now when it came down to the wire it's always been him vs the bad guy by himself. Which is awesome, but I'd like to see him really tested without any help from any powerful friends. The perfect way to push him to his limits, and really test his metal...

How did we last see Peter? He lost his uncle. He lost his mentor. He lost his aunt. His best friend doesn't know who he is. His girlfriend doesn't know who he is. He has basically nothing and no one close to him that isn't a superpowered hero. He's lost. He's tormented. Fertile ground for a good symbiote story.
JFerguson
JFerguson - 7/29/2023, 9:39 PM
@DarthOmega - Doesn't that technically count as an assist from the symbiote? And with Sony running the show, you just know they will get Tom Hardy in there to cameo as the voice of the symbiote talking to Spidey.
mountainman
mountainman - 7/29/2023, 10:21 PM
@DarthOmega - A great 4th movie could be Peter isolated from his friends, gets the symbiote suit, involve Black Cat and Daredevil and have it be a gritty street level movie against criminals like Hammerhead and Kingpin.

Just in case you never saw this iconic Comic-Con moment...

That was my #2 favorite Comic-Con

Also, I know many of you can't stand the DC universe but this was my #1

Me then would have never been ready for what an absolute goddamn disappointment it became.

@kg8817 - It was so cool hearing lines from Dark Knight Returns and then seeing the logo.

It reminds me of where we are with the James Gunn stuff right now. He's throwing all this cool at us, like Snyder was back then with the Dark Knight tease, the Doomsday rumors, that Aquaman poster (Unite the Seven), Cyborg, Flash and Wonder Woman castings, etc, but when we see it all it'll probably be a mess just like the Snyderverse was.

There’s potential for each Spider-Man. Tobey, Andrew and Tom to have great solo films and another great team up Spiderverse film as well as multiversal team ups with Avengers, Xmen and Fantastic Four. Even the worst Spider-Man film is still better than half of the crap cbm’s that have come out in the past 20 years.
I would love to see Garfield end up being on the next Venom movie as he’s the most logical spidey to be involved with Tom Hardy’s venom.
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 7/29/2023, 9:32 PM
For budget reasons and audience tastes, I dont think Secret Wars is going to be the type of movie nerds are expecting it to be, nor it should...

Back to Garfield, I dont care how, but Sony needs to put him in Venom 3, Andrew deserves a final movie (even if it is with him as the "antagonist"), Venom deserves to have a Spiderman in one of its movies, and overall, is just the most logical thing to do.
