SUPERGIRL: WOMAN OF TOMORROW Lands Writer Previously Tasked With Penning THE FLASH’s SUPERGIRL Spin-Off

With the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes finally over, DC Studios’ DCU just took an important step forward. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ana Nogueira will pen the screenplay for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

The actress and playwright is making her foray into screenwriting with the DC Comics adaptation; however, it’s still very early days for the project as no director or lead star is currently attached.

It’s said that the deal has only just closed, so it’s likely going to be a while before we receive any additional updates.

What’s interesting about this news is the fact Nogueira was quietly tapped to pen a Supergirl movie for Warner Bros. when the studio was developing a Sasha Calle-led The Flash spin-off. The Scarlet Speedster’s solo outing was in post-production at the time but the project was scrapped when James Gunn and Peter Safran took charge of DC Studios and moved on from Walter Hamada’s planned DCEU slate.

This new Supergirl movie is based on Tom King’s hit Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow run published between 2021 and 2022. It’s unclear whether Calle will be given a second chance to play Kara Zor-El, but it’s no secret that Gunn was a big fan of The Flash, going so far as to describe it as "the greatest superhero movie ever made."

"Superman is a guy sent to Earth and raised by loving parents, where Supergirl in this story, she is a character raised on a chunk of Krypton," Gunn explained in a video announcing the DCU slate back in January. "She watched everybody around her perish in some terrible way, so she’s a much more jaded character."

The trade explains that Gunn and Safran, "liked the work Nogueira had done on the previous Supergirl project and quietly brought her back, even giving her an overall DC writing deal." That points to her being a major player in the DCU moving forward and DC Studios is clearly confident in her ability to tell this particular story on screen.

Many of you will know Nogueira best for starring in The Vampire Diaries, The Michael J. Fox Show, and The Blacklist. However, she’s also a budding writer, penning the Broadway play Which Way to the Stage and adapting author Alice Sola Kim’s short story Mothers, Lock Up Your Daughters for Warner Bros. Discovery.

Sasha Calle Please!

@BlackStar25 - If they don’t bring her back, why bother? I mean yes, she technically belongs to the Cavill-verse, but the two never shared screen time together.

She did a good job with what she was given. She was one of the strongest parts of The Flash.

And honestly if WB/Gunn recasts Kara with some blonde hair/blue eyed actress (like she’s depicted in the comics) so soon after dumping Calle, it’s going to create so much controversy.

@BlackStar25 - Sasha was amazing as the Girl of Steel. Shame she won’t be back as Supergirl.

@BlackStar25 - She was cool and everything but I couldn't see her as Kara. She looked too much like Lara Kent.

@videovac - well then nothing will have changed since post The Dark Knight trilogy

Mostly crap, with the occasional good project

Personally have more trust in these guys than most of the people who have been in charge these past 10 years (Geoff Johns could have worked if he wasnt fired before anything he actually developed had been made)

@dracula - Was he really fired? I remember the reports said he stepped down from being both his positions that he used to have back then in WB's divsion to help them make DC films and also in DC Comics to start his own productions with his own production company, especially with Stargirl. But I agree, he would have worked. He's proven it on TV but WB as always wanted rushed results and I doubt any creative, like him in this case, can feel comfortable with that.

@AmazingFILMporg - not like comic book movies always had big name directors

Who heard of Jon Faveru before Iron Man

Joss Whedon was a tv guy with 1 movie under his belt

Tv directors directer Captain America 2 and 3 and Avengers 3 and 4. The russos were only known for directing episodes of Community and Arrested Development

Nolan was always a great but it was Batman that turned him into a big name

Hell James Gunn himself was a nobody before Guardians

This is a different era. Talent then isn't the talent now.

💁

The time for experiment is over. The genre is dying. Bring in experienced film writers please🙋

"don't you dare bring in sound, well substantiated arguments into this." - @bkmeijer1

He didn't bring in a "sound, well substantiated argument"! I'm glad you said that though, 'cause I was just about to reply to him.

"not like comic book movies always had big name directors

Who heard of Jon Favreau (spell his name right if you're gonna use him as an example) before Iron Man

Joss Whedon was a tv guy with 1 movie under his belt

Tv directors directer Captain America 2 and 3 and Avengers 3 and 4. The russos were only known for directing episodes of Community and Arrested Development

Nolan was always a great but it was Batman that turned him into a big name

Hell James Gunn himself was a nobody before Guardians" - @dracula

The thing about all those directors you mentioned (save the Russos, because I don't know about their desires prior to movies for Marvel Studios) is that they were always interested in making big budget genre movies. They always had that desire in them.

Look at all their work after they did their comic book movies: still genre. What is Ana Nogueira's credibility? What is Ana Nogueira's claim to fame? She used to be an actress on The fukcing CW! That makes her qualified to help create a 200 million dollar blockbuster?

They/Hollywood/WB did the same shit with Ava Duvernay. The fukc were Ava Duvernay's credentials for adapting THE FOURTH WORRRRLD......Are we crazy? Are you serious? Joss Whedon is a cheap TV bastard but at least he had an established history in far-out storie and genre material and nerd shit. Ava Duvernay directed movies about social issues.

And in case someone wants to mention Ryan Coogler, the same with Carol Danvers 2019, how many people would have seen Black Panther if it weren't connected to the at-the-time hottest thing on the planet? How many people would have seen Carol Danvers 2019 if it weren't sandwiched in-between the at-the-time two hottest movies on the planet? Take the MARVEL logo out of there. Take the Marvel Studios connection out of there. How many people would have seen them? WITH MARVEL CONNECTIONS GOING INTO THIS WEEKEND, THE MARVELS "STILL" BOMBED! "That's" your answer...

Yeah, as - and I can't believe I'm saying this 'cause he stuck up for Marvel Studios recently - @AmazingFILMporg just said, you're hiring people for all the wrong reasons. This chick was hired, or re-hired, absolutely because she's a chick, and hiring people who have no credentials, or qualifications, or credibility, is absolutely (the definition of) hiring them for the wrong reasons.

You wanna make movies for specific groups? Fine. Please make them. But you can't spend 300 million on a movie that has a 150 million (user)base at best. They're hiring her the fukcing weekend after the biggest kids on the block, Marvel Studios, are seeing a reckoning due to their hiring practices and overall decision-making.

For God sake back a truck up to Kathryn Bigelow's house and dump a truck-full of money to her house to get her to sign. Do that. She's the greatest women's director of all time. She has credibility to spare. Hire Lauren Montgomery, the woman who's directed DC animated movies, Wonder Woman being one of them. There are women out that that have the experience, the proof (of purchase), the credibility, etc.,you name it. They have it all. But shit, they're not even doing that. They're hiring untalented hacks, and ine perceived first-timers, 2ho don't know a fukcing thing about fantasy story-telling.

It saddens me that people defend Hollywood it truly does.

Just make it a good movie. Don't give toxic fans any excuse to call it woke or identity politics.

I didnt hear those toxic fans for Wonder Woman or Mad Max Fury Road. I think a good movie lowers the volume on everything. Bad movie gives people the temptation to find something to blame.

@EnergyVamp - I’m envious of you if you didn’t hear any toxicity around Fury Road. I think it could be the greatest superhero movie and some morons will be like ‘a girl? What about Superman? Just woke nonsense…. What’s a comic?’ Just like when the same type of people got upset about them ‘turning Superman gay’ despite it being his son and him being Bi

Why muddy the waters with two characters who almost look the same, have same power, cloths everything?

Only difference is their sex.

@MartianManHuntr - I'm good with it. It's a stand-alone character from the comics, is female, ties to the biggest superhero in the world and great source material. This movie is made for everyone

@bkmeijer1 - I have never read Supergirl comic so I'm not really up to date with, did she also used powergirl moniker?

If yes then they should go with that.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 11/14/2023, 7:04 PM
@MartianManHuntr - in an alternate universe she did. Think she has a richer history as Supergirl though, so I prefer that one.

But Power Girl works all the same, except maybe not for all the hardcore fans I bet
