Does DC Think That Superman is Lame?

Mathan Erhardt at insidepulse.com has offered up a piece postulating that DC Comics thinks that Superman is "lame" and is doing nothing to hide that feeling.

No doubt fans of the Man of Steel will be offended by such an assessment, but, damn, if the author doesn't offer up some compelling evidence.

"I used to enjoy reading Superman comics," he writes. "...I loved Byrne’s revamping of the Post-Crisis Man of Steel. But Superman has been struggling for quite some time now and I’m just going along for the ride. And the really bad thing is that even DC knows that Superman’s lost his luster and they don’t appear to have any interest in fixing things. Don’t believe me? Just look at the evidence. Look at the line up for the Super-books last year.

"Sure on the surface you’ve got three titles; Action Comics, Superman and World of New Krypton. But Kal was only appearing in World of New Krypton. Superman focused on Mon-El while Action Comics showcased Nightwing and Flamebird in a story that was so unpleasant that I didn’t really shed any tears when Greg Rucka ended his association with DC Comics. So, for an entire year you’ve got Superman’s two titles featuring characters that aren’t Superman. That’s twelve issues of Superman-free comics in Superman and Action Comics. Sort of setting an odd precedent don’t you think?

"This year we have Superman appearing in his own title, while Action Comics has been ceded over to Lex Luthor. Yeah, Superman is so boring that Lex Luthor has taken over on of his titles and people are actually enjoying it more, I know I am.

"What it basically boils down to is that for at least two years, including the year celebrating the 70th anniversary of his first appearance, Superman was relegated to a single monthly title. Just like Jonah Hex. Superman is supposed to be the marquee character for the company and he’s demoted to starring in a single monthly title for two years? It doesn’t seem like DC has all that much confidence in the character does it?

"... And then to make matters worse you’ve got JMS abandoning his monthly writing gig on Superman to focus on developing more Superman Earth One graphic novels. So the only positive buzz the Man of Steel’s had in years ends in a fumble. Good going DC. And again, I get it; Superman’s a difficult character to write, making him starring in multiple comics a month an incredible headache. And if you don’t have enough stories to fill two monthly titles give one away. It makes sense. I just wish that they’d make a formal announcement that Action Comics would be handed over to characters that, y’know, writers felt like coming up with stories for.... Basically I think that DC needs to sort out it’s problem with Superman or else I won’t have a problem dropping the book he’s in. I mean it’s only one title, but still…"

What do you think? Any validity to these observations?

The red underwear is lame. J.J. Abrams suit had it right. Hopefully after Snyder's movie it'll get people thinking Superman is "cool" again. Because a lot of people really do think he's lame.

Ever Since Doomsday and Funeral for a friend they have reached there peak...Its like Micheal Jackson and Thriller... They cant quiet get to that High again... Even Batman Got Killed and is making his way back but will he be the same?

They need to look at the Talent at their other company Image and Wetworks bring those writers over like Kirkman of Walking Dead and see if he can bring bring darker life to the Man of Steel!

Very interesting find ED! I'm not impressed by the Superman stuff I've read so far...I only started with #700 and despite loving what JMS did with Amazing Spider-Man and Thor, I think that "Grounded" has been very poor so far. DC really do seem to have run out of interesting ideas when it comes to Superman. Grant Morrison's run on Batman had it's faults, but both that characters group of titles and Geoff Johns' Green Lantern and The Flash are all much better.

It's unfortunate but not unexpected New Krypton lost it's appeal to fans and support from the editors killing off every major thing in that story. While now DC made a terrible mistake with JMS and putting all the focus on him and Superman only for him to leave that title it never occurred to them that people might want another Superman book somewhere else.

But it's only so much DC's fault when no one buys Superman books it's a two way street and fans for the longest time have not found him interesting it's no wonder this happened.

As for Action yes it may have won more people over who read it but still is losing readers maybe it says more people want Superman in that book which he will be in #900.

The reason books like Batman and Green Lantern have sold so much and are doing so well are writers who are committed to the characters with years of developing stories while no writer seems to stay on Superman.

Like I always say, every character is only as good or bad as the person writing them. Is Superman "lame" is certain hands? Of course he is. I have read Supes stories that would make your eyes roll. In fact I would say that there are only a handful of writers that really get the character..but again, that's just my favourite take on him. Some people just enjoy the fact that he can punch stuff really hard and shoot laser beams. On the other hand, a character like Batman or Wolverine is a bit harder to mess up. Bottom line, he is both lame and not lame!

Earth One isn't a fumble. It's a new direction, and further installments will sway dissenters.

Although, HATERS GONNA HATE.

@JoshW

All Star Superman has been hailed as one of the best Superman stories of the past decade and a must read. Certainly a bigger creative high then Doomsday which was good but not on the same level.

@Guason

A writer who wants to use Superman to his fullest potential can be can help more then a suit change.

@Hawksblueyes

It's not his superpowers if you read any superhero comic you know that the hero wins. It's that even the writers of Superman think he should be smaller in scope the best stories of Superman are epics "realism" or things that make him weaker do not work as much.

John Byrne had it right in the stories he wrote post-Crisis. He was still DC's most powerful hero but he had limitations. It made the first few years post-Crisis something interesting to read.

DC has been slowly botching every aspect of Superman ever since they started introducing more and more Silver Age elements of the character, slowly ramping up his powers again, giving him fewer and fewer weaknesses, and of course diluting the brand by having entirely too many Kryptonians around. It was a foolish error on their part and now they're back to square one.

The Bryne era was already wearing thin with fans in the nineties which is why Superman was rebooted as far back as then.

Wtf of course DC doesn't think Superman is lame?

Superman is the biggest baddest m@therfricker out there and can basically beat the sh1t outta all of 'em!

If it wasn't for Superman, none of us would be here right now! :)

OK, fine, forget I said anything. Double jeez.

And for the record, Superman has been my favorite character since way back in the 1960s. That being said, the character in the comics has been hit and miss, periodically climbing to some pretty great heights before dropping again. Same with the character on film. Can't wait to see what happens with Man of Steel. I'm hopeful.

@ TheDemonHunter - You are absolutely right about the JB era. I had given up on Superman until Byrne revamped him, and then I was a regular collector.

@AlReg - Byrne's stories started getting bad later because DC began to wrest control from JB and trying to change a lot of what he had created for Superman's revamp, which eventually caused his departure. So, in the end -- it was DC's fault, not Byrne's.

I'm a big Superman fan and have been reading for 3-4 years now. I started reading at Geoff Johns final arc on Action Comics "Braniac" and I LOVE that arc. Straight after that Geoff leaves and everything goes downhill.

I love superman but something needs to be done to set him back on track. And no that doesnt mean killing him off again.

you think supermans lame go and read all star superman, if you dont find that story touching then, well theres something wrong with you people, also superman earth ones done more then re invent the character, its got my mates taking him more seriously where as before they thought he was "lame" but this guy does have a valid argument hopefully snyders movie does what nolans bat movie did for batman, make him the bad ass he is, it should be the total opposite of batman (yeah i know its obvious, but all this dark, gritty crap all these directors are throwing around is getting kinda boring) its what superman represents that makes him so great to me not his powers or his costume, the guys more human then us human, his greatness weakness isnt kryptonites its humans something that needs to be played up in the new movie

I would say that if Superman is coming off as lame anymore, it's because of bad writers, not because he's a bad character. I've read Superman stories that I would rank among the best comic stories I've ever read. Don't try to tell me that there aren't any good stories left to tell about Superman. We just need a writer with some imagination and creativity and the new classics will come.

Deadpool: Nice observation about Smallville. That show has done a lot to tarnish Superman's reputation. It's the original superhero show for people who hate superheroes.

Leee: I'm glad to see someone beat me to this most important observation- without Superman, we wouldn't have this website or hundreds of other great characters.

Ed: I would love to see a Superman movie that captures the feeling I got in the theater in 1978 watching the original Chris Reeves film. Still the gold standard for great CBM's.

how is JMS abandoning that superman comic for bigger superman novels considered a downgrade for superman. Earth One was such a hit they are putting it ahead to get the next one out. Secret Origins was a big hit, Smallville is still popular. that alone shows that hes still popular, and now snyder is making a superman movie. if anything superman is prolly becoming more popular now than it has been for awhile.
