Henry Cavill Calls MAN OF STEEL's Epic Destruction "The Lesser Of Two Evils"

There's been some controversy surrounding how Superman took General Zod down in Man of Steel and equally as much about the destruction and casualties their battle in Metropolis resulted in. Hit the jump to check out Henry Cavill's take on why that was, "the lesser of two evils."

There's no denying just how impressive the final action scenes of Man of Steel were when Superman and Zod faced off in Metropolis in a climatic battle for the fate of the planet. However, the widespread destruction (which obviously resulted in hundreds or thousands of deaths) has been criticised by some, especially as it appeared as if Superman was doing little to help save those people. Well, star Henry Cavill has now summed up his thoughts on the matter pretty perfectly!

Click on the image below to view the video.

"I don't think it was intentional. I'm just saying. If two super human beings were to go head-to-head and you have a choice between trying to take this guy down or leaving him be -- he'll destroy the planet as opposed to part of Metropolis -- and I think it's about minimizing as much damage as possible by choosing the lesser of two evils."

In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time. Clark Kent/Kal-El (Henry Cavill) is a young twenty-something journalist who feels alienated by powers beyond his imagination. Transported years ago to Earth from Krypton, a highly advanced, distant planet, Clark struggles with the ultimate question 'Why am I here?' Shaped by the values of his adoptive parents Martha (Diane Lane) and Jonathan Kent (Kevin Costner), Clark discovers having extraordinary abilities means making difficult decisions. When the world is in dire need of stability, an even greater threat emerges. Clark must become a Man of Steel, to protect the people he loves and shine as the world’s beacon of hope – Superman.

STARRING:

Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/Superman
Amy Adams as Lois Lane
Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent
Diane Lane as Martha Kent
Michael Shannon as Zod

After rewatching the film, the city was already [frick]ed up because of that World Transformer thing.

Superman had nothing to do with the destruction until he battle Zod and the city was already [frick]ed up.

I'm cool with in. Next film go a little smaller with Metallo or Parasite with also Lex.

The whole city being devastated by Superman fiasco is stupid. The world engine destroyed most of Metroplois alone. Superman took down two buildings. Hell just look at the comics where shit like this happens all the time.

Makes sense to me

Most of his character's actions were a result of him facing a strong force, who will stop at nothing. The neck snapping incident, true to his nature or not, was because he had no choice.

Just my opinion, don't bite my head off...

He's Superman, the character many are not interested in because of him being "overpowered." I think there are still a few ways he can protect the city WHILE engaging in a battle...what? Fine, this is his first appearance. But isn't he supposed to evolve into that "overpowered" character people are getting tired of? Or, at least, show that the destruction left behind, and his powerlessness to prevent it actually costs him emotionally. So...no, I don't think that the real issue is "Superman destroys," because he didn't, but the lack of any real impact is what bugs me. Just my two cents.

I think the debate over Supes neck-snapping Zod is not about whrether he should have done that, of course he had no choice, the debate I think is more about the choice to MAKE that scene in the movie, to show supes killing someone. That said I liked the movie, made for a new gen, and the killing didn't bother.
revloveR

what kal should have done was asked zod if they could fight in space to minimize the damage to the earth. I'm sure zod would have obliged.

I love how some people focus so hard on how many people "MIGHT" have been killed, and not on the fact that Superman saved the 9 billion people on Earth by destroying the World Engine.

There are two scenes of people running out of buildings away from the beam of the world engine. There is one scene that shows people getting caught in the beams gravity, and slammed down to the ground, but its not gratuitous.

Im so sick of hearing about this destruction garbage. Superman himself DID NOT cause any of it, aside from when he was thrown through the row of buildings by Zod, but again, that wasn't his fault. The gas station thing can be overlooked. His mother was being threatened and his anger got the better of him.

Ive seen the movie 4 times now, and ive liked it better on each viewing. Bring on the sequel.

Yeah, because the entire Superman mythos is about choosing to be less evil than his antagonists. SMH.

The point is for Superman to avoid a situation where he has to turn an entire city into a superhero warzone.
LucasMend
LucasMend - 7/20/2013, 10:17 AM
He lost his shit, zod and his people were going to destroy his planet and almost killed his mother, what the hell you wanted? for him to minimize shit? a god like him would of course lose control. But I agree the fight took too long. could be short. but still it was ok, better than that iron shit 3

Essentially, Levitikuz's monkey logic reads as such:

1.) Zod already committed mass murder so who cares if Superman recklessly endangers a few thousand more innocent lives.

2.) Hulk and Abomination did indeed fight in the middle of Harlem because the villain already chose the location. What this has to do with Superman's decision to purposely bring fights into the middle of Smallville and Metropolis is beyond me.

@ blackagar94

You're right, to be honest I found myself having most of my problems coming the script. I just really didn't the dialogue or how certain events played out from the Jonathan Kent's death, to Zod's death. I just felt like Goyer wasn't the right guy for the film. Synder I actually thought was good when it was first announced, but then he completely changed his style for MOS. Anyway, I hope they change it up and hand the writing job over to somebody else for the sequel.

superbatspiderman
superbatspiderman - 7/20/2013, 10:20 AM
Superman and Zod's fight at the end of the movie is not what destroyed the city it was Zod's world engine that destroyed most of the city. When you think about it Zod and Superman only destroyed like 2 buildings and left a couple whole in some other buildings. Superman destroyed more than that in the cartoons.

Hell Superman destroys just as much in this fight from Justice League Unlimited as he did in the Man of Steel.
I guess that means Superman on this show has no care for human lives too.
RamonSuarez
RamonSuarez - 7/20/2013, 10:20 AM

RamonSuarez
RamonSuarez - 7/20/2013, 10:22 AM
I'm still more disturbed that Superman commits genocide against his own people than anything else. At least he could claim he was just a novice when he recklessly fought Zod in Metropolis. But when he destroys Zod's last ship he tells us that "Krypton had its chance" and destroys their last known means of reproduction even after Zod pleads with him not to do it.

Where was all this pathetic bitching during the Avengers finale?. They [frick]ed up all of New York, and there was not a single one of these bleeding heart sentiments thrown at that movie.

People need to get a damn life and really think about the things they complain about. Does it really matter?.

Oh and again...SUPERMAN SAVED THE WHOLE DAMN PLANET!!!.

@Levitikus How dare you bring the Hulk and Abominations fight into this? lmao No buildings were completely leveled and tens of thousands of people didn't die in the aftermath. Just a few cops cars, a military vehicle, city bus a billboard, the side of a few buildings, fire escapes and a rooftop.

Truth be told I don't have too much of an issue with the destruction. It was a learning experience for Supes. Next time he'll probably try to take the fight elsewhere and save as many lives as possible. And I also agree, the world destroyer thing did more damage than their fight.

Ocelot

It's like some people expected Superman to put Zod in a rehabilitation program on Mars or something or give him a hug to calm him down.

The same people bitching about Superman killing Zod would have been the same one who would have bitched if Superman took out Zod in the most obvious and glarring way which would have been Zod falling into the black hole thing like the rest of the Kryptonians did. Thank goodness they didn't go that route.

Regarding the destruction, the gravity ship is the one that levels Metropolis not Superman. Furthermore Zod was the one who was throwing Superman into buildings and hurling satelites from space into the planet and using his heat vision to bring down buildings.

Should also note that Superman who "apparently" doesn't care about saving people in this movie saves the entire planet by destroying the world engine machine which would have rendered the entire planet inhospitable for humans thus killing them.
