Henry Cavill Talks About Man Of Steel Beard; Immortals Director And Co-Star React To Casting!

Talking to The Vancouver Sun, Immortals director Tarsem Singh had this to say when quizzed about casting a then relative unknown like Henry Cavill in the movie and how the news that he would play Superman helped to ultimately justify his decision. "They knew this was such a big film and I could go with one of the big actors, so why was I stuck on this unknown? But I wouldn’t come off the pole. They finally gave up and said, 'Have your guy.' When I cast Henry as an unknown, I was considered the fool. Eight months ago he’s suddenly cast as Superman, and I’m the genius."

Cavill's co-star Freida Pinto also shared her thoughts on hearing the news that he had been cast as the iconic DC superhero, "I didn’t see it on set, I have to be honest. That might be because he was covered in muck all day (as Theseus). But now that he’s all cleaned up, I look at him and see a fantastic Superman."

"Things are pretty crazy right now," Cavill said when quizzed about how being cast in Man of Steel has changed his life. "And I’m loving it. In this business, 99 percent of the time you hear 'no.' You have to put your head down and just deal. But when you do hear the response you want, it’s a wonderful thing." He added: "I genuinely had to throw my clothes out, since my shoulders are too big and my waist is too small. Everything just doesn’t fit like it used to. I have never been this big."

The actor then went on to reveal that he needs "a little product help" when it comes to the hair, but it will most definitely be his body which fills the suit, not any sort of CGI enhancements. "This takes hours," he revealed gesturing to his chest. It’s been two hours a day for the last eight months."

"The stubble is necessary," he says mysteriously. "I have various stages of a beard (in the film)."

STARRING:

Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/Superman
Amy Adams as Lois Lane
Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent
Diane Lane as Martha Kent
Michael Shannon as Zod

RELEASE DATE: June 14th, 2013.

@Scorpion Lois is an award winning reporter even before Clark gets to the the Planet. It makes sense her being older. "She is a very good actress", exactly.

@Scorpion what that she's "ditzy, frumpy, 10 yrs older looking than Cavill, scary FUPA sporting house frau"? Cause you're just trying to troll. She is a beautiful woman.

DOn't people want "more reality" out of CBMs? In reality, an award winning reporter will be older than a starting one. Looks 10 years older? Maybe without make up and cam filters and all...
KeithM
KeithM - 11/13/2011, 11:04 AM
@Scorpion: So is he giving his opinions. What makes yours any more worthy than his? And what are you adding? There is nothing else to do BUT refute your suggestion that Amy Adams isn't "Hot" - I say she's one of the "hottest" women on the planet. More than just hot too. Beautiful. There is no "evidence" either for or against that that either of us can quote without it being entirely subjective. All you can do is refute my assertion that she is hot, which adds nothing. You just have to take it on faith that many people DO find her very 'hot' indeed.

Her age is irrelevant, except in that it suits her role in this movie - of an experienced lead reporter - so therefore entirely appropriate.

You said it yourself - the only reason you think she's 'wrong' is what you've seen of previous Lois Lanes - which here is irrelevant because it's a 'new' interpretation.

Who says Lois has to be in a specific age range? Who says she 'must' have a certain look. You? The comics? In which she is technically at least 85 years old now. :)

I say they absolutely should NOT be held to any preconceived notions about the characters above and beyond the logic their characters and their place in the story requires, NOT based on being so just because it's always been.

I'm gonna have to go with @Scorpion on this one. Fine, Lois doesn't have to be "HOT" but she should be attractive enough to be more than average. Adams is very average, like a girl that would live down the block or something. There is nothing about her that would grab anyones attention. Lois should at least be overall a pretty girl, with and without makeup on. Lois's personality isn't of a person who would use a ton of make up, Adams needs it to cover up all her wrinkles and bags.

As for the age thing, in the film Superman is supposed to be in his EARLY 20s, Cavill fits that bill. All because Lois is an award winning reporter doesn't mean she has to be an old ass lady. She is supposed to be the most talented reporter the world has seen in a very long time. Why can't she also be in her 20s? She can't win an award within her first few big, front page articles? A couple of years out of college and quickly rises up at the Daily Planet? This isn't no ordinary woman. People need to stop underestimating Lois Lane.

And fine. Even if she is supposed to be "older," The oldest she would be is 30 years old (which still is ridiculous in my eyes). Amy Adams looks like she's gonna be 40. She looks her age! That is a problem.

An early to mid 20's Superman.

A late 30s, possibly 40 year old Lois?

Does anyone really think that is accurate??

Scorpion has a point. A few people on this website may view her as "HOT" or "BEAUTIFUL," but A LOT of people also on this board and off don't view it that way. (I believe we had a poll proving this! lol) She is very average to many, many people. Hollywood calls every actress beautiful, or stunning out of respect, it doesn't mean its true. But to each their own. Thats just my view on it.

(BACK TO THE ARTICLE) I knew Henry was the only man who was perfect to play Superman the first time I watched him on The Tudors. I can't wait until he proves me right and blows everyone out the water.

rbfn04 - 11/13/2011, 12:17 PM
@Julez yeah, Amy is not pretty...

Also, you won't be assigned to big stories when you start. So, no, you can't get an award when you start.
breakUbatman
breakUbatman - 11/13/2011, 12:24 PM
To be honest I highly rated him in the Tudors but couldn't see him as Superman before he was cast.

@ KeithM I think all CBMs are held and should be held to preconceived notions especially ones based off the comic book, remember a XMO: Wolverine. If you don't compare with the comics there wasn't much wrong with that movie or Sinestro and Hal's relationship in Green Lantern.

But seriously they couldn't dye her hair?
rbfn04
rbfn04 - 11/13/2011, 12:36 PM
@breakUbatman man, if you don't go with the comics and change everything about characters, why even make it about a character qith 80 years worth of stories? Make up a new character...
JULEZ13
JULEZ13 - 11/13/2011, 12:36 PM
@rbn04: I didn't say that she would get a big story when she starts. I said she gets into the Daily Planet after college, quickly rises up as a talented reporter, and gets her award AFTER a FEW big, front page stories. So she would have a lot of small stories before she becomes known and gets her BIG stories. This could happen in 3-5 years with someone as talented as Lois. Say shes 21 when she graduates and starts working at the DP, that means she wins her award at about 26. That sounds pretty reasonable.
JULEZ13
JULEZ13 - 11/13/2011, 12:38 PM
@Scorpion: People use her role in The Fighter as being "as tough as nails," I saw her performance more of a girl tired of being pushed around her whole life and as she got older decided she was gonna not care and start defending herself. Definitely not Lois.

"man, if you don't go with the comics and change everything about characters, why even make it about a character qith 80 years worth of stories? Make up a new character... "

That's the point I was trying to make in response to what KeithM said. Basically if things shouldn't be a certain way just because it's how they've been then there was nothing wrong the character portrayals and relationships in the movies I mentioned

"what "product help" for the hair is he talking about??"

At a guess, Toppik or Nanogen. These are micro hair fibres products that fuze to the scalp and create fake hair. It looks very realistic and it's near impossible to tell you are using it.

I love everything I have seen regarding "Man of Steel" EXCEPT that they didn't make Lois a BRUNETTE. It's such an easy thing to do, that the fact that they didn't bother to change her hair color boggles my mind. You wouldn't make Mary Jane a blonde, or Gwen Stacy a red-head, so why isn't Lois a BRUNETTE?! In most pictures so far Adams appears to be a red-head, or have strawberry-blonde hair. It bothers me. I see Amy Adams, not Lois Lane.

BTW, every time my woman watches "Body of Proof" (Dana Delany) on Hulu, all I hear is Lois Lane talking. Messes with my head! Same when she watches "Private Practice" (Tim Daly) I just hear Superman. ;)

I understand alot of people are split about the whole Amy Adams thing, but i will say this about her IMHO she is a Hell of alot prettier than Margo Kidder and is a way better actress than Kate Bosworth. So in my mind the movie have raise the standards for Lois. Plus, give her a chance people, most of what we've seen has been set photos,It'll look better in post production. Chill out and just see what comes, trust me they've got a while before they finish filming.

KeithM

@breakubatman: I think you've misunderstood what I was saying - unless you really are of the school of thought which says absolutely nothing AT ALL should be changed - which isn't even true of the comics btw, which have constantly been 'reinterpreted' - in which case there's no argument which could sway you anyway...

So, for the sake of argument, considering this is what they're saying it is - a modernising of Superman for a new generation, respectful and mindful of the essence of the character, but not necessarily beholden to or an adaptation of any specific story or iteration from the comics - in other words, this is Superman Begins - and just as Nolan's Batseries has been both respectful to the comics, but also unafraid to be its own thing, I assume (hope) that that's the thinking here too.

So, as long as they get the essence of Lois Lane right - a tenacious, beautiful (and subjective opinions aside, Amy Admams IS beautiful) and strong go-getting reporter, does it really matter what her hair colour or age is? And you must be still in puberty if you think she's remotely 'old'. That must make me ancient and I don't feel ancient...
