J.J. Abrams Reportedly Working On A New "Cape" Project At WB - Could It Be SUPERMAN?

A very reliable source has indicated that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker director J.J. Abrams might be developing a new superhero project at WB, & there's a lot of speculation that it could be Superman.

There have been "rumors" (really just wishful thinking and speculation) doing the rounds for quite some time that J.J. Abrams (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Star Trek) might be in line to direct a new Superman movie for Warner Bros., but it looks like we may now have something more solid to go on.

While appearing on Barstool's "My Mom’s Basement" podcast, Variety's Justin Kroll had the following to say when the recent mega-deal between Abrams' production company Bad Robot and WarnerMedia was brought up: “I hope the new Warner Bros. deal leads to more stuff, maybe someone with a cape. We’ll see. That’s a hint.”

Of course, the Man of Steel is not the only DC Comics character with a cape, and we have been told that the studio is making Supergirl a priority moving forward (Batgirl is another possibility), but one can't help but wonder if this is a little tease that Abrams really is chatting with WB about taking the helm of a new Superman adventure.

Kroll knows his stuff, after all, and is often privy to details of major news stories long before they hit, so while we'll obviously have to take this as a rumor for the time being, it is definitely worth keeping an eye on.

What do you guys think? Would you like to see a J.J. Abrams-directed Superman movie? Sound off in the usual place.

Kroll already said on twitter that he wasn't hinting at Superman

@DonDave - Well, he said he never mentioned Superman by name, which is true. If you listen to the podcast he definitely knows something.

@TheRationalNerd -
Why? It would just be a remake of Superman '78.

@Battabing - Because of JJ's Lens Flares? I think he could do a whole lot better than "78 Superman

@Lem1 - @Battabing is making a joke about how TFA was a remake of New Hope and that Abrams would do the same thing with Superman '78

Honestly, I think JJ would give us a great Superman movie.

I sincerely hope that Henry Cavil returns to the role as well. I get the feeling that he has a great Superman in him, it's just that he's had garbage material to work with so far.

Do a stand-alone All-star Superman inspired film

@BlackBeltJones -
Actually for a reintroduction to Superman I'd go with Superman For All Seasons.

Probably something Bat-related.

I don't want this man anywhere near Superman. He might want to make a Supergirl movie though.

I think JJ would do a fun and entertaining Superman, but it wouldn't be very deep. However, it would still be a step up from the souless Man of Steel. They've explored the pathos of being Superman in a really superficial way, but they haven't explored the humanity of Superman, thats why these new movies seem so hollow.

In my head I’m picturing JJ’s take on Superman resulting in exactly 2006’s Superman Returns. Nothing more. Nothing less.

I liked Cavill as Superman and I just wanted another movie with him before but now I no longer think that way. With the new Batman coming along and with new actors playing his supporting characters I just want a new Superman too. I already wanted a new Lois and a new Lex. We needed a living Jimmy. And I’m not opposed to a new Perry. So yeah let’s just get a fresh start. I’d love to see a living Ma and Pa Kent. Let us completely forget about some of the dumb stuff from Man of Steel. Let’s do it.

@TheUnworthyThor - The only Superman characters I really liked in MoS and BvS were Jor-El, Martha and Perry. Everyone else just weren't right imo so I'd be down for a complete reboot. Might be for the best to do it like Reeves' Batman where it's apparently separate from the rest of the DCEU.
A trilogy involving:
1. Toyman and Metallo
2. Parasite
3. Brainiac and Supergirl
and featuring Lex in a supporting role would be cool
