Oh God... NOT ZOD!

Oh God... NOT ZOD!

Why bring back the villain from Superman II is a TERRIBLE IDEA.

The newest rumor on the Superman reboot, which apparently comes from the usually reliable The Hollywood Reporter, is that Warner Brothers has interest in casting Viggo Mortensen as General Zod. This is not the first time the rumor that Zod is the main villain has surfaced. It also jives with rumors that there´s search for an actress to play Ursa, Zod´s henchwoman. As a matter of fact, there´s been talk of Zod way back to after Superman Returns, when Bryan Singer claimed he intended to go Wrath Of Khan for the sequel that never happened, not to mention a Ma Kent line from the movie about never knowing what´s out there, referring to Supes being the last son of Krypton. If it´s gonna keep that major element, was it even worth it firing Singer in the first place?

One of the main things that bothered fans about the last Supes movie was exactly the fact that there were too much references to the old franchise, to the point where some called the movie a “requel”, a mix of remake and sequel. And one of the things that excite fans the most about the reboot is the possibility of finally seeing popular villains from the comics that never made it to the big screen, in spite of the fact that there have been five (six, if you wanna count the George Reeves one from the fifties) theatrical Supes movies already. This hardly seems like something the reboot´s “godfather” Chris Nolan and writer David S. Goyer would come up with. When they resurrected the bat=franchise with Batman Begins, they were wise enough to use Ra´s Al Ghul and Scarecrow, two popular villains from the comics that had never made it into a feature film. Director Zack Snyder has also showed to have a good pulse of what fans want in a comics adaptation. There are plenty of suitable choices. Just from the top of the gallery:

BRAINIAC:

PROS: Think of all the cool crazy futuristic hi-tech stuff he could come up with to use against Supes, a gold mine for designers and FX wizards. His cold, calculating machine logic is a perfect contrast to Supes´ kindness and compassion. The character has recently been reinvigorated by the Geoff Johns and Gary Frank miniseries Superman: Brainiac, which even updates the old concept of the Bottled City of Kandor. He´s arguably the second most important Superman villain ever.

CONS: The general audience may think of him as a cliché “AI gone rogue” kinda character, but hey, how many scientists gone rogue we have seen in superhero movies again?

DOOMSDAY

PROS: Has starred in Superman´s blockbuster storyline The Death Of Superman. Has great potential for action and suspense as this unstoppable, “force of nature” villain that mercilessly destroys everything in his path like a living hurricane. It could be an interesting arc to have the character go from mindless beast to experiencing human emotions, as has happened in the comics.

CONS: After the death of Supes being a big plot point in SR, much of the character´s main appeal is lost for a feature film.

DARKSEID

PROS: Darkseid is the Darth Vader of the DC universe. Bringing the hordes of Apokolips to Earth would be epic on a Star Wars/ Independence Day scale, not to mention even by himself Darkseid is a tremendously powerful villain and an evil mastermind.

CONS: May be so big and epic he´s too much for a movie that intends to rebuild the franchise from the ground up. May be more suited for a sequel.

As a matter of fact, as overused as Luthor is, even he could be a more interesting choice. There´s a lot of potential from the various takes on Luthor that has never been explored in movies: the businessman who “owns” Metropolis, the brilliant but nefarious weapons manufacturer, even president Luthor could be an unusual and interesting take for a superhero movie. Finally a dead on serious, brilliant and menacing Luthor, without any campy humor.

Part of the problem with bringing back Zod is, the character has already been brilliantly portrayed on film. Terence Stamp´s Zod has even ranked above Luthor as a comic book movie villain among fans, for he was the first villain to be portrayed seriously in a superhero movie, with all his icy majesty and menace.

I´m hoping this is all a red herring. After all, we heard more than once that Catwoman wasn´t going to be in The Dark Knight Rises and the female leads were going to be a Vicki Vale/Julie Madison-like girlfriend and Talia Al Ghul, then they announced the casting of Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle. If this is the case, I´ll compliment them again for their skills in keeping fans in the dark till the proper moment. If not, even with the casting of fan-favorite Henry Cavill for the part of the man of steel, and all the talented people involved, my faith in this reboot has been severely tainted.

No surprises here- WB always lacked imagination when it came to SUPERMAN films. Always have and always will.

I think Zods going to be a great choice for it. Don't really want the likes of Doomsday and Darkseid straight away, it's like sticking Venom in the Spider-man reboot yet it needs a villain that Supes can go at it with without killing them with a single punch.

He can do that with Brainiac and his technology too. I don´t mean to NEVER use Zod, I just think for the first movie of a franchise reboot, it´s important to use villains we haven´t seen before. Then, in the sequel, you can come up with fresh takes on already used ones.

I think Zod could work and I beleive we can still see a new take for this film. At least we have a villain superman can fight this time. I would have preferred Brainiac but I do think choices like Doomsday and Darkseid were risky and should be saved for sequels.

The combination of Brainiac & Metallo could be cool.
Them both being semi mechanical baddies. Writers could
even tie Metallos origin to Brainiacs technology in some
way if it worked well on screen.

The Zod rumor is likely BS, and has been confirmed as a
rumor before. Supposedly, No Zodd thank god!

Thanks for doing this man. We need classical villians. In the comics Zod was one of Supermans worst villians.

This is so much diffrent from...

This. They actually made him so much better than he is.

I don't care if they reuse villains as long as Lex is the main/only villain. I like seeing new takes on the characters like the Joker and Two-Face which are brilliant. So I'm really not bothered if they use Zod

@mannymade1
You think that donner's: 80s looking-just walked out of a gay bar covered in tassles & sparkles-wooden version of Zodd is better than the Zodd that actually looks like a military general dressed in the proper military atire?

Umm, sure?

I'm glad you're not behind the Man of Steel character & costume department, lol

Oh God...Their bringing back Zod, one of the coolest villains from a prior Superman film?!?! That's worse then when Nolan brought back Joker from the old Batman films and ruined The Dark Knight....Oh wait...PEOPLE!!! THE MOVIE HASN'T EVEN BEGUN FILMING YET!!!

I liked the original Zod sure but Superman never had his powers when he fought them and then when he did the fight was over and we didn't get any real good action scenes with Superman fighting them so I say bring in Zod and let there be an epic fight. Plus who knows what if they bring in the character of Christopher in this film too? Zod's son with Ursa for those of you who don't know.

I think Brainiac and Metallo would work best. With Brainiac as the brains, and Metallo as the brawns. I think it'd be epic.

With Alan Rickman as Brainiac and... Hm.... What about Derek Mears (Friday The 13th Remake Jason, original Predator in Predators) as Metallo? Hm..
One2three
One2three - 2/26/2011, 11:37 AM
@golden123
Simple, because that is what he is wearing in that picture
mannymade1 got from the comics. It is almost entirely
identical to an earthly military uniform. Therefore the
thats what the creators intended and thats what we
should get. If you like the gay 80s underground rave look,
all the power to you. I only suggest the true to comic
military look is better, that is all.

TorturedXGenius - 2/26/2011, 12:16 PM
Metallo could been done (not like the Terminator style) but the Secret Origin way, it makes more sense and it'll look better on film imo
ultimatefan1974
ultimatefan1974 - 2/26/2011, 12:18 PM
The creators also intended for Superman to leap high instead of flying and be a sociel crusader instead of fighting supervillains and giant spiders. Comic book characters have always evolved with the times, and suffered adaptations from a media to the other. I´m not the biggest fan of the Superman II villain costumes, but that uniform would have been plan and lame.
One2three
One2three - 2/26/2011, 12:32 PM
@ultimate
I am awareof the natural evolution of comics and accept itentirely. But saying that the original uniform is worse than an outfit that a cross dressing janet jackson look alike might wear, I DO NOT accept. I believe in innovating new ideas for alternate media, dont get me wrong. But, there is a line. At least stay closer to the comic or ground it in realism some way. I dont care if you are from the future, another planet. Intelligent species do not wear metal under wear and hoola hoops as clothing. Their military wont wear outfits with tassles
and sparkles. They will choose natural/durable fibres,
they will display rank with characters or symbols, not
english, maybe not even recognisable to us but will still follow a degree of rationalism. Come on guys.
LP4
LP4 - 2/26/2011, 3:38 PM
@One2ephu- Agreed, IF Zod must be in the film they should at least put him in his original MILITARY uniform. The rave/sparkle look I thought was pretty cool actually since it made him seem "relaxed while killing people" and it just seemed like something a villain could wear. But I agree too that for a GENERAL...he should wear more actual military-attire.

It's not like Zod you saw in Superman II was made for the movie. This can be an entirely different incarnation of him. His appearances have been pretty sporadic...
LP4
LP4 - 2/26/2011, 10:08 PM
@Creature- Very true dude. They could go in a totally separate and new direction with this take on Zod. But i think what worries many people (including myself) is that...I think they already established what needed to be established with Zod in Superman II. I mean Terence Stamp was such an EPIC General Zod he just seems un-toppable in that role. Plus again- they told the whole story of Zod in the first 2 films...along with that great portrayal by Terence Stamp. I just don't see Viggo topping Stamp and the sad thing for Viggo is that if he actually does portray Zod then the poor dude will constantly be judged and compared with Terence Stamp. And that isn't fair for him I mean, if they can give him a villain role that hasn't been touched yet, then it gives the guy a clean slate of a character to work with without having to be harbored by past portrayals. I like what some people suggested of having him play Metallo.

This is just my personal viewpoint on Snyder possibly resurrecting Zod. Plus it would seem like another wasted opportunity to bring in a new villain to a Superman film finally. I mean Brainiac has been attached to soooo many failed Superman projects all throughout the 90's. Hell there was even supposed to be a 5th Reeve film with BRAINIAC as the main villain but it was later disposed of. And then of course the Kevin Smith film...and even supposedly the sequel to SR would've had Brainiac.

Brainiac deserves his due. He keeps getting shafted and I don't understand why.

But eh this comment is getting long. I will just treat this as rumor for now until Snyder makes some official announcements.

Oh and @Alexandre Winck- I agree with EVERYTHING you said 100% dude! I would prefer President Luthor over Zod as the villain. I mean with President Luthor think of all the villains he could employ or team up with- Parasite and Metallo are usually working for Luthor as thug-types anyway. So think about it- President Luthor with his thugs- Parasite and Metallo and at the end of the film he could battle Superman while wearing the battlesuit! Unfortunately this film is sounding more and more like it'll just be Zod and Ursa again and I don't see Luthor making it into this film. So many people are against it and went public about being sick of Luthor. I doubt Snyder will put him in at this point. Which is unfortunate because Luthor has NEVER had a proper portrayal in the movies. He is always portrayed as campy and just all-around lame.

Knightstalker
Knightstalker - 2/27/2011, 7:53 AM
If Lex Luthor was president of the USA, he couldn't allow himself to be publicly connected to Parasite or Metallo. Also, an all-out Luthor-battle suit fight with Superman wouldn't be likely either. Even if the president was a bad guy, I'm not sure Superman would duke it out with him, not to mention where the secret service would be during the battle.

Great editorial. I always thought Brainiac would make the perfect villain for a Supes movie.
LP4
LP4 - 2/27/2011, 8:56 AM
@Knightstalker- Secret service would suck, LOL. It would be awesome though...the US Government versus Superman ;D Maybe since he's president...he could help fund for the Intergang of Metropolis secretly and form a secret temp alliance with Parasite and Metallo, lol. I see what you mean though he wouldn't want to be seen with them or affiliate with them but maybe he could keep it hidden from the public. But with presidents nothing is ever 'hidden' for long. I'm reaching here =P But i agree- Battlesuit Luthor will NEVER happen in a film. Seems like with Superman they never wanna take risks -_-

But yeah, maybe Snyder can make Zod seem more interesting in this film...we'll see ;D

@TheQuestion- Brainiac would totally make a perfect villain esp for a reboot like this. What better way to give Superman a fresh, new start then to give him Brainiac to battle who operates as both a thinker/fighter. Plus all the technology he could override and just think about all the wonderful things that could happen with Brainiac. Ah well...Zod could be good too I suppose...if they make him an actual general this time it would be interesting. =P

I'm guessing it won't be Darkseid or Doomsday, either. Your "cons" seem solid, enough. I bet they go with Luthor, Zod AND Brainiac. I'm thinking The Last Son Of Krypton in the Superman: Animated Series.

It would be f--ked up if Braniac get's screwed outta a Superman movie again. This would be a real hack job bringing back a villain from a previous movie. What next, Nuclear Man? Plus, I really don't see Viggo for Braniac either.

How about Zod and Brainiac? Double Kryptonian trouble!
Knightstalker
Knightstalker - 2/27/2011, 7:50 PM
If their actually going to go with Zod, I would hope that they explore the relationship between Zod and Jor-El as well as the nature of Brainiac on Krypton. However, with only two and a half or three hours of theater time to play with, I'm not sure they would have enough time to tell that story and give it any real credence while telling Superman's story as well.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 2/28/2011, 10:16 AM
considering that Doomsday is one of the worst, and most one-dimensional characters ever created, I would have to say that he would be the absolute worst choice.

General Zod would be fine. It would make more sense for him to the villain in the first one than just about anyone.

Darkseid should be saved for the 3rd movie, if it makes it that far.

Brainiac is the only other villain i think can give Supes a challenge both mentally and physically. That would make for a great story as well as action.

Metallo isn't a big enough threat to carry a movie on his own.

And the only way I want to see Luthor play a big role is if he creates Bizarro so Supes can have something to fight.

Also, Superman Returns was supposed to take place between Superman 2 and 3. They even stated that before the movie was released.

@Knightstalker...I'd prefer seeing the Jor-El/Zod heavy movie rather than a Superman reboot with Cavill ;D

@Whiteharted...not my movie, bud; I'm just guessing @the villain theme ;)

If I had a say, I would have either gone with a retro 1940's feel with Hamm as Superman teaming with a Batman played by Cavill vs. an ultra futuristic Brainiac:

or a more modern tale with Welling as Superman pushed to the brink after Darkseid rips a President Luthor played by Rosenbaum to pieces:
