REACHER Star Alan Ritchson Reflects On Being Replaced By Justin Hartley In Failed AQUAMAN Pilot

Reacher and Titans star Alan Ritchson has reflected on being cast as Aquaman in Smallville, only to soon learn that he'd been replaced by Justin Hartley in the planned Mercy Reef spinoff. Check it out...

Smallville was a series that served as the big break for a lot of talented actors, including Reacher star Alan Ritchson. He played "A.C." in the show, and was introduced as that world's take on Arthur Curry/Aquaman. However, shortly after he debuted in the Superman series, news broke of an Aquaman pilot, Mercy Reef.

The show looked set to be a huge deal for Ritchson, but when the time came to shoot the first episode, he was out and Justin Hartley was in. Cast as the new Aquaman, the actor wasn't the best fit for the King of Atlantis, and the project never moved beyond the pilot stage. It all worked out okay, though, as Ritchson returned to Smallville and Hartley joined him as Oliver Queen/Green Arrow.

Talking on the Inside Of You With Michael Rosenbaum podcast (via TV Line), Ritchson was asked if he was upset at the time about (briefly) losing the role. "I wasn’t mad at all; why would I be mad? I hadn’t done anything [at that point]; Smallville was my first gig. We started working on a deal and the president of UPN was looking at this roster of shows and going, ‘Who the hell is that guy?’"

"Which is the same thing I would do!" the Reacher star added with a laugh, clearly harboring no hard feelings about what happened. "I was sitting there like, ‘I can’t believe it was this easy. I’ve been here three weeks and I’ve got my own show?' And then like a week later, 'Actually, Justin Hartley just came off [the NBC soap opera] Passions and he’s available, and we’re going to go with him.'"

"I learned the best lesson I could, early on, to hold loosely to this stuff," Ritchson continued, "because nothing is guaranteed, and nothing is owed to me. if I hadn’t learned that lesson early, I would have been an entitled a**hole."

After playing Aquaman in Smallville, the actor eventually returned to the DC Universe to play Hawk in Titans. That role was relatively short-lived, but Ritchson has now moved on to bigger and better things with Reacher, an Amazon series that was given a season 2 renewal days after debuting.

On the last episode, which I'll watch tonight.
I have enjoyed it, a good representation of the book, which I've read 3 or so of.
Glad to see the fans of the book love it as well.

Glad for Alan as well, made the best decision to leave Titans for this

@SimplyAz - did he decide to leave Titans or was his character just killed off?

@Nunyabiz - I thought I read his character isn’t dead, so the door is open for him to return if he so chooses

@Nunyabiz -

I'm sure I read that he decided to leave, so they killed him off, but could be wrong

@ProudPatriot76 - he was in the afterlife with his dead brother and his body was blown up so he couldnt return to it like the other two people did.

@Nunyabiz - while this very true I just hope they don’t use time travel or an alternate reality version of him to bring him back. It is a comic book show after all.

@Arthorious - Agreed. The plot devices of using time travel and multiple realities have been overused in my opinion. It runs the risk of being boring. That's my concern for the current slate of Marvel/DC films and tv shows.

@SimplyAz - Half way thru the season. Really digging it!

And as someone who appreciates the art of acting...I'm entirely impressed with this dude's career. I remember thinking how bad his acting was in Smallville when I was younger. And now dude is killing it in this role.

@Tonic24k -

Glad you're enjoying it as well Dude.

I thought the same when I saw him in Small ville as he definitely came across as AquaBro.

It wasn't until I saw him in Titans that he played someone serious and then killed it as Reacher

I thought Justin Hartley played Green-arrow !? Heard AR is awesome in Jack Reacher ...cant wait to binge the sh!t out ovitt!

@emeraldtaurus - Hartley did play Green Arrow. They brought him in for season 6, that was a year after the "Mercy Reef" pilot failed.
That failed pilot was also the reason Hartley didn't reprise the GA role for a spin-off because he feared the same fate happening to that pilot.

Out of the crumbles of that pilot we ultimately got "Arrow"

@Blergh - isn't that a trip? Justin Hartleys decision to pass on the Green Arrow spin off is responsible for birthing the entire Arrowverse instead of the entire Arrowverse being a continuation of the Smallvilleverse.

@Blergh - Wow, never knew it was his decision! I just assumed history repeated itself with the network doing to Hartley what they did to Ritchson in opting for a new actor
ElricReturns

@emeraldtaurus - totally. It was a perfect storm.

They wanted to ride the wave of the Nolan movies on the small screen with the budget of a show like Smallville. Man, I actually really miss the tone of the first 2 seasons of Arrow. It had this gritty parcore edge to it, felt grounded in a very different way than Nolan, almost maybe more believe for a parcore archer in smudge makeup and a hood to be murdering crime bosses. It was a cool show early on.

The ironic part is as it went on it got more and more like Smallville. Smallville also began very grounded and low level then got more fantastical and grand as the seasons went on till it was near comic book levels.

Obviously the Arrowverse has been in comic book territory for almost a decade now... but those first 2 seasons of Arrow.... I miss that tone.

@BIGBMH - funny enough, I think now a days Ritchson would make a phenomenal Oliver Queen opposite Jurnee Smoletts Black Canary. I could see him being tough enough to take her abuse lol and him being a great mix of Justin and Stephen's Olivers mixed with his original style. We would look like a beast in a Green Arrow suit.

I'd ask him how was it with him leaving Titans.

It was obviously because of Reacher, but how did it go?

Did he just tell them he's leaving and so they changed the script and let him be killed by Red Hood?

Was he originally supposed to have an arc in season 3?

The afterlife Titans episode was a nice send-off tho.

HBOMax would be stupid not to capitalize on the nostalgia people have for Smallville.
Damn, even a 4 episode mini-series featuring Aquaman (Alan Ritchson), Green Arrow (Justin Hartley), Flash (Kyle Gallner), Black Canary (Alaina Huffman), Supergirl (Laura Vandervoort), Martian Manhunter (Phil Morris) and Hawkman (Michael Shanks) go up against Deathstroke (Michael Hogan), Deadshot (Bradley Stryker), Metallo (Brian Austin Green) and Lex Luthor (Michael Rosenbaum) would be amazing.
Seeing Clark (Tom Welling) live a normal life until he has to embrace his powers again would be dope as well.

I'm sure they're all game (not sure about Hartley and Welling)

@Blergh - as much as I'd love this... in reality it would be janky as hell. I'm hoping for something animated.
Origame
Origame - 2/10/2022, 10:26 AM
@Blergh - apparently the Tom welling Clark got combined into the earth prime of arrowverse following the crisis. Don't ask me how that makes any sense, since they already got a Clark kent/superman, but that's apparently what happened.
Kyos
Kyos - 2/10/2022, 10:34 AM
@Blergh - Sadly Michael Hogan likely wouldn't be able to return. He had an accident 2-3 years ago, sustaining brain injuries. Last I heard he was partially paralyzed, and suffering from memory loss and other unpleasant things. :'(
archangel3777
archangel3777 - 2/10/2022, 1:23 PM
@Origame - Darn. I'm hoping it is not entirely true. I heard about this before, but ifeel like it is not fair to the Smallville franchise corner of DC. It has been a very pop culture phenomenon amongst fans. One light of hope though...there was talk of a Smallville animation being developed (if you google search, etc.). So we will have to wait and see.

I'd rather see him as the DCEU Aquaman than Khal Drogo.

Ritchson has the looks.

@bkmeijer - I agree with you 100%. I think he could do a lot of stuff. He is my personal pick to play Johnny Cage in the next Mortal Kombat sequel.
