Superman: The Animated Series Began Its Final Run 28 Years Ago. Where To Watch All 54 Episodes!

Twenty-eight years ago yesterday, Kids' WB began the final season of Superman: The Animated Series. Where to watch all 54 episodes, and why the 2000 finale still splits fans.

I was a Superman kid first. I'll admit that up front, because I think most people started with Batman… Superman is the first comic book I ever remember pulling out of the wire rack of my grandpa and grandma's grocery store and sneaking into the breakroom to look at the pictures because I was too young to read what was on the page.

Twenty-eight years ago yesterday, on a Saturday morning, September 19th, 1998, Superman: The Animated Series started its third season on Kids' WB with an episode called "Where There's Smoke." That's the episode Volcana made her debut in.

Wikipedia's episode list counts season three as ten episodes, September 19th, 1998 through "Unity" on May 15th, 1999, and then files the last three under a season four. epguides doesn't recognize a fourth season at all and stuffs all thirteen into season three. Either way, they're the same episodes and the same dates.

With that in mind, I'm going to stop calling it the third season and refer to it simply as "the last run," because both sources agree on that. Fifty-four episodes in total, and there were only thirteen left, starting with that one.

Kids' WB scattered those thirteen episodes over seventeen months, with ten airing across the 1998-99 season, then "The Demon Reborn" turned up on September 18th, 1999, and the final two not airing until February 2000.

"Knight Time" aired October 10th, 1998. Bruce Wayne has gone missing, Gotham is about to figure that out, so Superman puts on the Batsuit and works the city with Tim Drake/Robin so the criminals never learn that the Bat is gone.

It's a Superman episode where Superman spends most of his screen time pretending to be a rich guy with no powers!

"Absolute Power" on January 16th, 1999 has Jax-Ur and Mala escaping from the Phantom Zone and building a New Krypton. "In Brightest Day..." on February 6th, 1999 sees Kyle Rayner's Green Lantern turning up in the DCAU for the first time. "New Kids in Town," "Obsession," "Little Big Head Man," "Superman's Pal," "A Fish Story" and "Unity" fill out the rest of the episodes.

A couple of things I want to correct while I'm here. "Apokolips... Now!" is season two, February 1998, and that's the one where Dan Turpin dies and the episode closes on a dedication to Jack Kirby. "Little Girl Lost" is also season two, May 2nd, 1998, and that's Supergirl's DCAU debut with Nicholle Tom voicing her.

Then there's "Legacy." Part one aired February 5th, 2000 and part two on February 12th, 2000, and that second one is the last episode of the series. Darkseid brainwashes Superman into believing he's his adopted son. Lex Luthor, of all people, is the one who weakens him enough to stop the invasion, the military locks him up, and Lois breaks him out so he can go after Darkseid. When everything is said and done, the public doesn't trust him anymore.

Michael Ironside voiced Darkseid across the show and did a superb job. He doesn't even need to raise his voice to take control of Superman's mind!

Tim Daly was Superman and Clark Kent for the entire series, with Dana Delany as Lois Lane and Clancy Brown as Lex Luthor. Bruce Timm and Alan Burnett developed it, Paul Dini produced and wrote, with Jean MacCurdy as the executive producer.

Both shows aired under one Kids' WB banner, The New Batman/Superman Adventures, and that combined title is what won the Daytime Emmy in 1998 for Outstanding Special Class Animated Program and again in 1999 for sound mixing. Shirley Walker's main title got an Annie nomination in 1997.

Ending the show with Superman brainwashed and distrusted by the public is a pretty lousy way to wrap up a show.

Luckily the DCAU picked the thread back up. Justice League premiered November 17th, 2001 on Cartoon Network with George Newbern as Superman, because Tim Daly was tied up with his CBS show The Fugitive. [VERIFY: how explicitly "Legacy" and the public distrust of Superman get referenced in Justice League and Justice League Unlimited. I couldn't get a second source that names specific episodes carrying that thread forward, so this is stated as a loose connection and not a documented callback.]

Justice League Unlimited closed the DCAU on May 13th, 2006 with an episode called "Destroyer," and it's the one carrying Superman's line about living in a world made of cardboard, always taking constant care not to break something or someone.

If you want to watch it, it's on HBO Max, and through Hulu, all fifty-four episodes as of September 2026. You can also buy it digitally through Apple TV, Amazon and Fandango at Home. There are DVDs and Blu-rays out there too. I didn't confirm whether either is still in print, so check stock first!

While I liked Batman: The Animated Series, the animated Superman series holds a special place in my heart. Chalk it up to being a Superman fan all of my life, or finally getting to see what Superman can do without the budget limitations imposed on him in live action, but I LOVED the Superman animated series.

Which episodes have you gone back and rewatched? Is "Knight Time" the one you'd show a friend first?

Putting this together has made me want to go back and rewatch the series... I remember loving the animation style when it was released. I hadn't realized it had been so long!

@NateBest - these shows came at a time when I was deemed "too old" to still be watching these, according to some friends and family. But I watched them all anyway, every week, and loved every minute of it.

@NateBest - are you okay Nate? All of these editorials dropping at once, did you lose a significant sum at the race tracks? We can start you a GoFundMe.

@NateBest - You should definitely go rewatch them. It's a great show. They all were. Bruce Timm did an amazing job with his run at WB and DC. I'm not a huge fan of this new Batman he's doing for Amazon, but the rest of it was fantastic.

@Patient2670 - I like Caped Crusader which is his new show but yeah , some of his previous work is still the peak such as the DCAU…

Would even include GL:The Animated Series tbh.

Certain decisions he has made like the Batgirl & Batman relationship I don’t love/like but that’s gonna be with every creative that adapts something where you might like some of their decisions and not others.

@TheVisionary25 - I don't hate it. And I don't mind the changes to characters either. The scripts just dont resonate as much as the original, and man, do I miss the hand animated look and feel from back then. I know it isn't cost effective, or doable, anymore. But that ewas a big thing for me. When you watch those first 2 seasons (before it became the new adventures of Batman and Robin), You can actually see shadows created by the cels being photographed against the painted backgrounds. There was just something so human about it all. Makes me sentimental. I was an animation major in film school, and then Toy Story came and changed everything (Not that I'm complaining about Toy Story).

@Patient2670 - that’s fair

I honestly miss that look too and 2D animation in general.

@TheVisionary25 - Unfortunately, it's a dying artform. Even the 2D animation they're doing these days is entirely digital.

@NateBest - I really liked this interpretation of Superman. I wasn’t a big fan of his character development in Justice League and Justice League Unlimited

@NateBest - I was a teenager when Batman: TAS came out. I watched it reluctantly after school and before I had to go to work.
Superman was my guy too. However...

I couldn't stand Superman: TAS because he constantly got his ass kicked by every bad guy on the show. It drove me nuts.

When JL came out, it got a little better, but it wasn't until Unlimited came out Supes really threw down with the fighting.

Sorry to disagree, but I prefer my Superman dominating every bad guy...no matter how boring it may be.

@TheVisionary25 - True, animators can be...weird about things. I remember watching lots of CN show that were for kids, but hiding pervs behind the scenes. The dialogue hits different too now, for some anyway.

I'm one of those physical media collectors who put everything on Plex. I don't need subscriptions.

If you want to do the same: find a disc drive that's flashable by using MakeMKV forums, flash the drive, then use MakeMKV to create 1:1 copies with zero audio or video degradation. Then here comes the hard part. I was lucky to get 100tb of hard drives a few years back, now they'd cost me twice the price but you could buy used on Ebay if that's the only option. I use The Terramaster F4-424 Pro NAS enclosure, I actually have two so I can split up the TV and movies. Next you'll need to download Plex on your desktop or Laptop and connect all the dots. It costs money to start up, but now I have no need for subscriptions and I get top audio and video.

I really wish this show got more episodes; BTAS got 85 episodes and 2 movies, a 24 episode sequel in TNBA which also had a movie, then another 52 episode sequel in Batman Beyond which had a movie as well.

I personally don’t think this show was as good as BTAS but I still liked it on its own and of course , the intro is fantastic…

I remember watching the three part premeire all the time as a kid and its versions of Brainiac & Lex became my definitive takes on the character.

Hell , I even loved their version of Parasite and found him to be really scary as a kid.

Anyway , would love to watch it again soon in its entirety or maybe even the entire DCAU which to me is still the best shared universe outside of the comics!!.

I'm rewatching it and I'm on season 2. I really like the limitations they put on his powers.

The rewatch made me realize something that I had never thought about: Superman doesn't fly like other heroes, he soars and this series has that down perfectly. MOS flight worked for that world but this is what Gunn should have looked at when doing his Superman.

Also Lori Petty as Livewire is so much fun.

I truly hope @NateBest will do an editorial on Bruce Timm's one season series of Green Lantern; especially with all of the current hype.

No joke, by the season/series finale I was in tears it was such an emotional roller-coaster. For those looking for a GL space adventure, this series is definitely it.

I definately enjoyed it. Wasn't a fan of the Brainiac new origin. May as well just make him a Eradicator. Also Lex wasn't insane enough...altough they hit the crazy during Justice League. Love the Darkseid stuff for sure though. Fleishcher will always be tops.

Best version of the characters outside of the comics (Byrne and Golden Age still being the best of all time, IMO).

Only gripe is that they never showed Clark creating the S symbol, Superman costumed identity, and mild mannered reporter disguise and getting his job at the Daily Planet, and that they had Lois Lane name him Superman AFTER he was already in costume rather than naming an urban legend of a mysterious superpowered helper like the comics. They should have given Superman's origin the same treatment they gave Batman's origin in the Batman animated series.

That, and its smaller episode number is what prevents it from being as good as Batman: The Animated Series.

I still loved the show though and the personalities, character designs, voices, and characterizations are perfect.

The Metallo origin episode, Stolen Memories, and the Toyman and Mr Myxzptlk episodes are some of the very best of the show and best Superman stories ever.
