SUPERMAN: LEGACY Director James Gunn Reveals Why He Won't Use This Divisive Technology In Upcoming Reboot

As filmmaker James Gunn gears up to begin work on Superman: Legacy, he's revealed that there's one recent piece of technology which he has no intention of utilising on the reboot's set. Find out why here!

The Volume is a large, immersive LED video wall often used for virtual production and is something of a technological marvel. Allowing filmmakers to create realistic background environments in real-time, it provides a dynamic and interactive backdrop for scenes and was first used on the set of The Mandalorian

Despite being an undeniable game-changer, it didn't take long for studios to get lazy. In Disney's case, for example, it's led to the bland Quantum Realm we all spent two hours staring at in Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania and, for Percy Jackson and the Olympians, murky backgrounds which would have once been brought to our screens by shooting on location.

Good can be done with it, though, but it's not a piece of technology James Gunn plans to use on Superman: Legacy

Asked by a fan whether it will be part of the upcoming DCU reboot, the director and DC Studios co-CEO responded, "Sets too big and my cameras move too much." We're not sure how Gunn feels about The Volume (many filmmakers aren't a fan), though it's clearly not a good fit for this particular project. It was, however, used superbly in The Batman last year.

We don't know whether Gunn plans to shoot out in the world. If he does, then there's a strong chance set photos will provide a sneak peek at many of Superman: Legacy's leads, including the Man of Tomorrow himself. An official suit reveal is sure to be shared before then, of course.

Superman: Legacy tells the story of Superman's journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.

David Corenswet is playing the Man of Steel, while Rachel Brosnahan has been tapped to star as Lois Lane. Other recent casting additions include Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.

Kurt Russell no longer appears to be in the running for Jor-El and there's no word on Ma and Pa Kent or whether they're even alive in this iteration of Clark Kent's story. Brainiac, meanwhile, is expected to serve as the reboot's big bad. With production set to begin early next year, we're hoping the final few cast members will be revealed in the weeks ahead.

Superman: Legacy is currently set to be released in theaters on July 11, 2025.

Does WB have access to the volume in the first place?

Volume is great but people use it the wrong way sometimes

@AmazingFILMporg - It can't be the only place you shoot. If you HAVE the money and there's a way to shoot local, do it. If you have the money to build physical sets, do it. If a LED stage is your last ditch effort before GreenScreen, do that.

I'm fascinated by the Volume because it does offer Indie filmers neat ways to shoot on locations we'd never get without having to resort to iffy GreenScreen. Cheaper productions absolutely should get to shoot on LED stages without getting hate.
Huge budget movies? Only if physically isn#t the way to go.

@AmazingFILMporg - The Batman and season one of Mando did a great job... Then they got lazy.

After Mando, I really thought the Volume would be the future of filmmaking.

@MCUKnight11 -

It still is. They just need to use it the right way but it's a cost saving juggernaut.

@MCUKnight11 - I think the Volume became really popular when Covid kicked in. It meant that films and shows could still get made in a controlled environment without the need to travel to locations etc... I think it is probably being used now more in favor of green screen but I think like everything, directors and studios use whatever tools necessary to get the job done.

I was hoping the technology in question would be nanotechnology. I get Tony would upgrade suits for people, but did I miss the feeling of clunky masks opening in the MCU.

@Knightrider - The problem with nanotech in the MCU right now is that it feels fake and non tactical. Gunn used it well in The Suicide Squad with Bloodsport. There it felt like real objects

@Bokis - it also wasn’t whored out to everyone .

That’s the worst part of the MCU is everyone has the tech it starts to come off like a police force uniform standard issue equipment thing

Bokis - 12/18/2023, 3:27 PM
@ShimmyShimmyYA - Yeah, that's definitely part of it as well! I was really happy to see the Spider-Men pull off actual masks in No Way Home

I'm a huge Superman fan but all this info from Gunn is beyond getting tedious.
Yes, your film comes out in 2025..... give it a f@cking rest, will you?

@lazlodaytona - I'd argue that it's less the info and more of every article being made about said info.

Feels like the Volume has mostly only been good when used on backgrounds that aren't the focus and aren't too otherworldly

If you can shoot on location DO IT

I’m so glad Deadpool 3 is shooting on location.

Part of why modern blockbusters have lost their magic is green screens and The Volume.
When you know they aren’t there and none of it is real, it just looses that touch. I know most of these movies are CGI but when you put that CGI in front of a real location it makes all the difference.

That’s cool…

The Volume was beneficial for the Co-Vid times since it’s a contained space but it isn’t really ideal for big scale & scope yet i feel so best to build big sets for that.

One shouldn’t rely on it but use it as a tool here & there I feel.

The Volume is such a great piece of tech and obviously it’s still in its infancy. It was used amazingly in Mando 1 and 2, but a bunch of the other Star Wars shows and Mando season 3 absolutely had an over reliance on it and it didn’t have the same level of care in its usage.

The Batman might be the best use of it so far, and it was used where it best served its purpose. The Batman really is one of the best shot films in general in recent years. I learn and pick up new things visually each time I see it.

When the Volume is used more expertly like it was there, it’s going to continue to open so many new doors for filmmaking and that’s just exciting stuff.

@DTor91 - You could really feel the volume in Ahsoka. The world felt empty and all of the sets were shaped the same way. Made it feel lifeless

The rise of green-screen, CGI and Volume, among other technologies, have done a lot of good in film, but those technologies have also robbed us, as viewers, of cinematographic wonderment in natural landscapes. We rarely see scenes like this in film anymore, that are shot on location where the natural scenery takes care of the background (this one, shot in Alberta, Canada):

@GeneralZod - One of the best scenes in one of the best comic book movies of all time. The first half of that film is absolutely flawless.

I couldn't agree more.

@Izaizaiza - I would even go to say the first two-thirds of the film is flawless. (The "Can You Read My Mind" flying date-night sequence with Lois, which I HATED as a kid, is really incredible filmmaking.)

@DocSpock - Nyah is a girl's name of primarily Swahili origin with far-reaching meaning. A variation of Nia, this inspiring name means "resolve" or "brilliance," encouraging those who wear it to move forward with purpose.
