As promised, DC Studios released the first full trailer for Superman earlier today (you can watch it here if you missed it).
The preview has wowed even the biggest sceptics, with James Gunn's approach to the hero clearly rooted in the comics. That's a far cry from Bryan Singer's overly nostalgic approach in Superman Returns and Zack Snyder's moody Kal-El in Man of Steel.
Now, we've combed through every frame of footage in the trailer to explore the biggest moments and reveals, from newly discovered story details to the presence of Kryptonite and other big nods to what's been seen on the page.
This is your definitive breakdown, and you can check it out by clicking the "Next"/"View List" buttons below.
8. Lois Lane Interviews Superman
We've seen Lois Lane interview Superman in the comics and several other live-action adaptations. This one happens in their apartment (confirming that she already knows Clark Kent's secret at this stage of their relationship), and things get heated fast.
The intrepid Daily Planet reporter doesn't hold back and quizzes Superman about the validity of his actions. It seems the Man of Steel decided to intervene in a war, entering a foreign country and putting an end to the hostilities there...however, not everyone appreciates it.
Why? Well, if Superman can end a war just like that, what else is he capable of doing? It's a big question, and one it seems this movie will set out to examine.
7. The Secretary of Defence
While comments from Frank Grillo suggested that Rick Flag Sr. takes over from Amanda Waller as Head of A.R.G.U.S., this trailer indicates that he's risen much higher up the ranks than that.
Lois tells Superman that the Secretary of Defence is looking into his recent intervention overseas, and it's then that the action cuts to Flag. Seeing as he helped avert World War III in Creature Commandos, it would make sense for the Government to give him a high-ranking position, meaning he's now Waller's boss and in charge of safeguarding the United States.
We later see Flag, The Engineer, and Ultraman arresting the hero; with the latter two believed to be allied with Lex Luthor, it seems Lexcorp might have close ties to the Government. Could Gunn be setting the stage for President Luthor?
6. Truth, Justice, and the American Superman Way
Much has been said over the years about whether Superman still stands for the "American Way" along with "Truth" and "Justice," and Gunn may have tipped his hat with this new trailer.
As Lois continues to push him on the fact that he essentially invaded a foreign nation without the President's permission as a representative of the United States, Clark hits back with, "I wasn't representing anyone except for me and doing good."
We're not 100% sure whether this marks a shift away from Superman being an American hero. However, it seems likely that the DCU's take on the Man of Tomorrow will be more about protecting the planet, and not just serving as a political figurehead (he's not Captain America, after all).
5. The Hammer of Boravia
Ultraman makes a few sporadic appearances throughout this preview, but we see more of the Hammer of Boravia. We can now start piecing things together, with Boravia obviously the country where Superman decided to end that conflict.
This representative of the fictional nation then attacks Metropolis, causing untold damage and turning the people against its protector. Don't forget the rumours that the Luthor-created Ultraman is really in the suit, as it likely means Lex has set this up to sway public opinion.
The fact that the Hammer of Boravia uses a power that looks an awful lot like Heat Vision not only lends some weight to those theories but seems to go some way in confirming reports that Ultraman is a Superman clone.
4. Lex Luthor in The Fortress Of Solitude
Not for the first time, Lex Luthor has tracked down the Fortress of Solitude. The Engineer is with him, and she wastes no time laying waste to the Kryptonian robots we saw were helping to heal the Man of Steel in that 5-minute sneak peek.
However, Krypto soon enters the fray and fights the villain. Where is Superman? We'd guess that he had no other choice but to flee, explaining why he's shown still looking pretty beaten up at his family farm.
Also interesting is the fact that Lex refers to Supes as "it." That drives home the sort of mentality he has in this movie, with his hatred for the hero stemming from his alien origins. It remains to be seen what kind of damage he can cause in the Fortress.
3. The Orb, Kryptonite
Superman's floating orb in the sky has evolved yet again, and we're still no closer to knowing what it is. Purple energy seems to be leaking from a cage that Green Lantern Guy Gardner has attempted to create around it; so why is Clark wasting time hugging it out with Lois Lane?
We're sure there will be a decent explanation in the movie, but, oddly, he isn't actively attempting to combat the threat. Regardless, even more interesting is Metamorpho turning his hand into Kryptonite, weakening Superman as Lex's goons lay a beating on him.
They look to be in a facility that's full of cages containing metahumans that Lex has either created or is actively experimenting on. If so, we can't help but wonder whether Gunn will use this opportunity to introduce other DC Comics characters.
2. Ma and Pa Kent
A flashback takes us back to Clark Kent's happy childhood with Jonathan and Martha Kent, while both are confirmed to be alive in the present day. Fortunately, we can't imagine either of them meeting their maker in Superman.
Clark appears to be extremely close to his father, while Martha rushing off to get her son's boots so he can suit up and save the day is a wonderful moment that feels very comic book-y.
As mentioned above, Superman seems to have taken refuge at home after likely being incapacitated by Lex Luthor's goons (Ultraman definitely seems to be stronger than the Man of Steel). Keeping him grounded like this will help make the God-like superhero feel relatable.
1. The Justice Gang
Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, and Mr. Terrific are all given the chance to shine in this latest Superman trailer, and they all look fantastic in motion. Guy Gardner's powers, in particular, promise to be a highlight, and Gunn isn't shying away from embracing the comics.
Mr. Terrific has his T-Spheres, and Hawkgirl looks to be the badass we've been hoping to see on the big screen for years now. Does Superman need superhero backup?
If the threat is big enough, sure, and Gunn is using this movie to establish the DCU as a world full of other do-gooders. Hopefully, it will feel a little more natural than Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice's attempt to transform the DCEU into the DCU at a breakneck pace.
