Ahead of the series premiere of Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles this September, Nickelodeon has already given the greenlight for a full second season consisting of 26 episodes for the highly anticipated animated show.

Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is a reimagining of our beloved heroes in a half shell and follows the adventures of Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo "as they discover new powers and encounter a mystical world they never knew existed beneath the streets of New York City."

The upcoming first season, set to premiere on September 17, will follow the Turtles "on different adventures as they master new powers, encounter absurd mutants and battle bizarre villains, each with their own motivations."

WWE superstar John Cena will play an original villain named Baron Draxum, "an alchemist warrior mutant who seeks to turn all of humanity into mutants." Meanwhile, Lena Heady will voice a massive mutant spider known as Big Mana. As for the Turtles themselves, the voice talent includes Omar Miller (Ballers) as Raphael, Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation) as Leonardo, Josh Brener (Silicon Valley) as Donatello, and Brandon Mychal Smith (You're The Worst) as Michelangelo. Additionally, Kat Graham (The Vampire Diaries) will voice street savvy native New Yorker April O'Neil, while Eric Bauza (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) voices the Turtles' sensei, Splinter.

Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles premieres Monday, September 17. Season two will begin production this fall. Nickelodeon also announced the renewal of four other series: Henry Danger (S5, 20 episodes), Knight Squad (S2, 10 episodes), The Dude Perfect Show (S3, 15 episodes), and Hunter Street (S3, 30 episodes).

I hope the new movie is great because this show looks terrible. Hopefully the kids at least like it.

Raphael as the leader just disgusts me. You don't mess with the balance like that.

@KWilly - kinda like making Wolverine the leader?

No Shredder, no Casey Jones, no watch.

I watched the first couple of episodes online and they are actually pretty damn funny. Leo as the snarky pseudo rebel and Donnie as this sarcastic know it all are just hilarious. Mikey is pretty much the same just with an artistic aspect and Raph has been dumbed down somewhat to play into the bigger bulkier design. April is also pretty funny but I will say I can't stand Splinter's design he is just one damn ugly little rat. The Foot Clan is set up with these two mystical guys who make origami foot soldiers with foot patterns over their faces so Shredder can definitely show up.

I caught the first episode last week. Cringeworthy doesn't cover it. Back alley abortions are probably easier to watch.

@inkniron - Yeah, I just watched the previews/trailers, and knew it wasn't for me. I'm just gonna avoid it, and focus on other interests while the new series airs. Hopefully when it ends, something better (and 100% more faithful) will come out than what we got.

My 13 year old daughter and I tried to watch the first episode (note that we are huge fans of the prior series) not even halfway through she said "this is horrible" and got up and left the room, I tried to hang in there but watching cattle get slaughtered was easier. Ugh..

@CyberBishop - Oh wow, not even the demographic that they're focusing on can stand this new show. That has to suck, but I'm not surprised. I'd like to think kids are smarter than executives give them credit for nowadays. Funny how Nickelodeon's hubris caused them to renew this series for a second season before they saw how the first season did.

Although with how successful Teen Titans Go was, maybe this show will shockingly do just as well? Time will tell.

I watched the first four episodes or mini episodes whatever they are just to at least give it a try and it is absolute garbage, in fact calling it garbage is an insult to garbage. This is by far the worst incarnation of TMNT, even worse than the Bay movies (Actually this toon is considerably worse. At least the Bay movies got their personalities right).

I’ve watched every incarnation since the 80, read comics and everything else. This isn’t TMNT, this is an abortion

@SpiderFanMan - Yeah, it's sad that the Michael Bay "Teenage Mutant Ninja Shreks" are more faithful than this show. Shame too because this franchise has so much potential that this new series feels like a waste.

It's hard for me not to bemoan this new take, but like I've said on the last TMNT article. The only way for me to avoid drama is to just accept that this show isn't aimed at me, and focus on other things in the meantime. It still sucks, but hopefully something better (and 100% more faithful than this show) come along in the the future. Plus I can always look backwards (or check out the comics) if I want a proper TMNT fix.

I tried to watch the first episode but the hideous animation burns my eyes. It's not awful, but it's short on the grit that makes TMNT interesting. Not my cup of tea, but maybe it's perfect for ten yr olds hopped up on Ritalin.

@rabid - Yeah, it's the same thing for every modern cartoon released from the US (which is a shame). This show seriously reminds me of Teen Titans Go, and the new Thundercats Roar with how awful everything is being handled.

Not surprised. With crappy cheap animation like that, they can probably afford to dish out about 2 more seasons before The ratings revenue runs out. Really is disturbing and sad the way animation has gone downhill. I don't necessarily blame the animators, I think it might have something to do with the lack of value cartoons are bringing in when they're not computer animation or anime.
