There's a lot of mystery and intrigue surrounding Seth Rogen's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot, but today, one layer was peeled back. The official title of the upcoming computer-animated film is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.

The announcement was made on Rogen's Twitter account, where he also shared some really cool artwork. You'll notice that it also contains a release date: August 4, 2023. This is actually one week ahead of the previously announced date, with the movie set for exactly one year from today. As the image confirms, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem will release exclusively in theaters.

Not much is known about the film or its plot, but Rogen has been drip feeding us concept art and vague details over the past couple of months. In February, we were treated to concept art for the CGI reboot, giving us our first look at the character designs for Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo. At the time, Rogen had explained that he intended on emphasizing the "teenage" aspects of the Turtles.

Not only was this evident in their designs but also from the humor in a previously released teaser image of Leonardo's science class notebook shared by Rogen. The three types of mutation listed on Leo's notes make a lot more sense now that we know the title of the film. While it's still not fully clear, perhaps the mentioned mutatations -- deletion, duplication, and translocation -- serve as a clue.

Details remain elusive and we still don't know who will be voicing our beloved heroes in a half shell. Nor do we know which non-Turtle characters are involved in the movie. However, going back to the notebook, a reminder to apologize to April [O'Neil] suggests she could also appear in the film.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem will be co-directed by Jeff Rowe. Previously, Rowe had written and co-directed Netflix's critically acclaimed animated film The Mitchells vs the MachinesCo-directing alongside him is The Mitchells vs the Machines storyboard artist Kyle Spears. Now previous success doesn't necessarily carry over to new projects, but The Mitchells vs the Machines was a fantastic movie with near universal acclaim, so at least we know TMNT: Mutant Mayhem is in good hands. If Brendan O'Brien can deliver a solid screenplay, then fans should be in for quite the treat. Not to mention, Seth Rogen and his longtime collaborator Evan Goldberg are both on board as producers.

With a release date just a year away, we should hopefully start to see some official artwork and perhaps a proper synopsis for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem in the weeks or months ahead.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is just one of multiple TMNT projects on the way. Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie will be hitting Netflix tomorrow, August 5, while Paramount+ is getting a series of villain-driven TMNT films.

Fine as a title itself. Just sounds more like a sequel than how you start off the franchise.

@Origame - is it any different than spider man homecoming title

@Origame - so long as rogan doesnt voice anything it will be fine, hes got a great mind for farming older IPs but he always voices something and ruins it.

@Gizmoduck - Idk, when he voiced Pumba all I saw and heard was a pre-mutated Bebop so if he voiced ANYONE besides an animated version of his own self, it could possibly maybe sorta kinda be Bebop.

@Gizmoduck - I’m calling it now, he’s either bebop or rocksteady.

@cyclopsprime - well mutant mayhem comes off like they're trying to make it sound bigger than the previous film.

How many reboots has the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have had by now? Between animated projects and live action?

@SonOfAGif - Quite a few. Every new crop of kids needs their version of the Ninja Turtles.

@TheUnworthyThor - but gonna say Seth Rogen's ninja turtle is not kid-friendly, seems the turtle is based on the original ninja turtle in comic but with a bit of comedy...I guess

@solskulldeath - I have no idea. Emphasizing the “teenage” part doesn’t make me think adult but obviously it could. Either way is fine for me. I’ve long argued that there should basically always be a Ninja Turtles aimed at children but in addition they should make a version aimed at people like me who were kids in the late 80’s/early 90’s who were absolutely obsessed with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

@TheUnworthyThor - The thing is, the original 80's movie was perfect. It was a perfect balance of the humor from the cartoon and the seriousness/violence of the comics.

No matter what direction a new reboot of the turtles goes in now, I don't think the humor will ever be taken away. Which kind of sucks because I would love a full on adaptation of the original comics. Although the original 80's movies was pretty close to that.

@GhostDog - Been into the IDW books? They get a little sidetracked now and again but for the most part pretty good reading that mixes in the new with the old.

@Reeds2Much - I fell off around city at war and have been putting off jumping back on because I’m reading too much at once. I read Last Ronin though.

Honestly I’ve just wanted some animated content. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the Nickelodeon series. Had its moments but the 2003 show was tops for me

@Reeds2Much - I dug Rise more than the 2012 show though

And the 2007 film is underrated Imo

what if this is ninja turtles 4, why have those 4 streaks of slime at the bottom, they dont connect to anything on the title

@dracula - I doubt it. The Roman numeral for 4 is IV, not IIII. Unless it’s like tally marks, but no one uses tally marks for movie titles.

I honestly love that TMNT has embraced that it can reboot and offer multiple interpretations without really harming the brand. It’s actually pretty fascinating. It has highs and lows of course as with any franchise, but dammit I am a sucker for TMNT and will at least give anything related to it a try.
