The star of DC and Warner Bros. Discovery's upcoming The Flash, Ezra Miller, who uses the pronouns "They/Them", has been the focus of numerous allegations over the past year. Such controversies have been a challenge for the leadership at WBD, which was reported to have considered different options for the film, including scrapping it and releasing it with little promotion.
A July report from Deadline stated that Warner Bros. did not intend for Miller to be part of the DCEU after The Flash released.
Earlier in August, Ezra Miller apologized for their behavior, saying in a statement: "Having recently gone through a time of intense crisis, I now understand that I am suffering complex mental health issues and have begun ongoing treatment. I want to apologize to everyone that I have alarmed and upset with my past behavior. I am committed to doing the necessary work to get back to a healthy, safe and productive stage in my life."
It was unclear at the time if Miller's apology would open the door for them to stay on as the Fastest Man Alive, but there is now new information regarding their standing at WBD. According to The Hollywood Reporter, on Wednesday, August 24 (the same day that Batgirl's "funeral screenings" took place), Ezra Miller visited the Warner Bros. lot alongside their agent to meet with studio heads Pamela Abdy and Michael De Luca.
Per the report, Miller's visit was to "reaffirm their commitment" to The Flash, apologize for "bringing negative attention to the production and [Warner Bros.]" and commit to finding help. The trade further stated that Miller feels particularly attached to their role as Barry Allen, and agreed to get help once they heard that Abdy and De Luca were considering canceling The Flash.
This isn't the first time in recent months that Miller has been in touch with Warner Bros. for Flash-related affairs. In August, THR stated the actor had taken part in additional photography for The Flash in the summer of 2022 amidst their legal issues. Warner Bros. recently delayed two DC films, Shazam! Fury of the Gods and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, but said delays will presumably not impact The Flash.
According to THR's report, WBD CEO David Zaslav is committed to keeping the movie's current release date, and work is well underway on the project, as a scoring session is reportedly scheduled to take place in the near future. Furthermore, The Flash is said to be inspiring a much higher morale around the company than it had at the apogee of Miller's controversies.
As mentioned, it had been reported that Warner Bros. did not plan to keep The Flash star in the DCEU following the film's release. However, Miller's reported meeting with the studio seems to suggest there could be an opportunity for them to stay on as Barry Allen.
The Flash is scheduled to release in theaters on June 23, 2023.
