Filmmaker Tim Burton Doesn't Appear Overly Happy With His Batman And Superman Appearing In THE FLASH

Batman director Tim Burton has reflected on very nearly directing movies featuring the Dark Knight and Superman, but doesn't seem overly happy about either character being in The Flash earlier this year...

Tim Burton brought the Dark Knight back to the big screen in 1989's Batman and later delivered a pitch-perfect sequel with Batman Returns. From there, he planned to do the same for the Man of Steel, casting Nicolas Cage in the ill-fated Superman Lives

The project fell apart long before cameras could start rolling and Supes remained on the shelf until Superman Returns attempted to recapture the magic of Superman: The Movie (it didn't work and Zack Snyder later rebooted the hero in 2013's Man of Steel).

In the closing moments of The Flash earlier this summer, Cage finally got to suit up as Superman for a peculiar CG sequence which saw him do battle with Superman Lives' widely discussed giant spider. Michael Keaton, meanwhile, took on a supporting role as the older Bruce Wayne.

Talking about very nearly getting to direct Batman and Superman movies, Burton recently told the British Film Institute, "When you work that long on a project and it doesn’t happen, it affects you for the rest of your life. Because you get passionate about things, and each thing is an unknown journey, and [Superman Lives] wasn’t there yet. But it’s one of those experiences that never leaves you, a little bit."

"But also it goes into another AI thing, and this is why I think I’m over it with the studio," he continued. "They can take what you did, Batman or whatever, and culturally misappropriate it, or whatever you want to call it."

"Even though you’re a slave of Disney or Warner Brothers, they can do whatever they want. So in my latter years of life, I’m in quiet revolt against all this."

While he doesn't explicitly mention The Flash, Burton talking about Warner Bros. misappropriating his work probably tells you all you really need to know about how he felt to see his Superman transformed into a CG monstrosity (we're guessing he wasn't pleased with that Batman's story continuing without him either).

Warner Bros, originally planned for Keaton to continue playing the Caped Crusader in Batgirl, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Batman Beyond, and Crisis on Infinite Earths. However, the formation of DC Studios has led to those plans being scrapped.

As for Burton, his superhero movie days are likely behind him and we're guessing that's not something he's too bothered about. We'll always wonder what might have been with Superman Lives but The Flash did at least give fans an idea!

@dragon316 - I have my issues with some of the MCU projects, but this is just not at all true. Even with their few missteps they are FAR ahead of any other CBM franchise.

@TheClunges - destroying? Nah they've interfered in the same way every single movie studio has done since the beginning of movies. The only difference now is that the world is full of a bunch of whiny bitches who take it as a personal attack and think directors should have free reign to waste studios money on a bunch of nonsense.

@BigPhilbowski - nah they're destroying it. The whiny bitches are the people who support these idiots interfering when those execs have no idea what they're doing.

Hiring a company that cuts trailers to edit a whole movie is the dumbest shit I've ever heard.

The way I saw it, Keaton's Batman in The Flash was a different Batman from the Burton movies. So to me, the original movies are still untouched. As for Superman, I got nothing.

@bkmeijer1 - I understand what you're saying but I also understand him, he dedicated some years creating those characters and world, and we all know aesthetics are important in his production.

All that to say he probably almost had a stroke seeing his batman in broad daylight, lol.

BritishMonkey - 9/16/2023, 5:26 AM
@bkmeijer1 - That's what I thought and how he explains it in the Flash that's exactly what happens.

bkmeijer1 - 9/16/2023, 5:48 AM
@Fogs - oh yeah, I get his point of view as well. He was after all the person that brought Keaton's Batman to live. Even if The Flash' is a different version, it's obviously based on the version Burton put time and effort in.

@bkmeijer1 - Superman is the one that makes the most sense to me, honestly. The idea that you spend years on a project, it never comes to fruition, then years later they can use wonky CGI to basically do what you were gonna do anyway and make money off of it. Not that it's not in their right, but it's shady and gross.

>Spend years developing new Superman take
>People think it's weird or don't like it
>You never stop thinking about it because of course you don't
>It falls through, never gets made
>For years exists as a bit of trivia or curiosity
>Suddenly the studio wants to make money off of what you did, but they don't want to pay you for any of it or have you involved
>Make a hideous, lazy CGI recreation of it
>That is forever how the culture will now remember this thing you poured your heart and soul into

I think his reaction is justified, especially since he's not up in arms about it, but more quietly disappointed
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 9/16/2023, 5:49 PM
@IronSpider101 - that's a great summary. The weird CGI (even uf intended) just doesn't make it any better either.

Think it would've a lot better if it was a small sequence Burton directed himself (if Superman Lives ever got to the filming stage that is)
Twenty23Three

Yeah using pre production photos of a film that never saw the light of day and making it the longest cameo of your awful CGI nonsense will never make any sense.

@Twenty23Three - I mean, that was an infamous production that got a lot of attention from the Kevin Smith speech he made about it as well as the documentary on the production. There was a precedent here.

Tomorrow there will be a meeting for all the people who care about this.

They were going to rent a football stadium to hold the event, but upon further thought they just reserved a booth at Applebee's.

@Reeds2Much - it didn't really have any added value in my opinion. They could've casted anyone.

Or even better, they could've just gotten JDM as Thomas Wayne.

I mean, they've got him and Keaton back for Beetlejuice 2, did it not occur to them that maybe Tim Burton was an important element for Michael Keaton's Batman return?

@bkmeijer1 - it's a little cheesy...however, sean connery really holds it together...between the literary monsters and the steampunk feel...just a good sunday afternoon movie...nowhere near as graphic and dark as the original graphic novel (which i got, and didn't care for...not a fan of too much dark and gritty)

bkmeijer1 - 9/19/2023, 4:48 PM
@soupysales - I never read the graphic novel, so I'd be going in completely blank anyway.

Sounds like the type of movie I'll catch on the good old cable tv someday. Only thing I my regular tv is good for: showing me those cheesy 1990s/2000s movies.

Batman Returns was getting way too Burton-weird with those fighting penguins and all.

But I think his Batman was super important for the character. Still my favorite Gotham, batwing, batmobile and batsuit - despite the fixed head issue.
RolandD
RolandD - 9/16/2023, 6:25 AM
@Fogs - it was my favorite, Gotham, batwing, Batmobile, and bat suit as long as you don’t count sister Nolan’s movies and Matt Reeves’ movie. It was light years ahead of what had come before but light years behind what has come since but Burton paved the way. The Batmobile from his movies still stands out, is excellent, although I love the one from Matt Reeves’ movie.

Pitch perfect sequel? Not so much IMHO. Batman 89 is far superior to Batman Returns and I think we dodged a bullet not having Burton’s Superman movie. It would’ve been interesting to say the least, but it would not have been my Superman by any stretch of the imagination. Just bring us a great Beetlejuice sequel.
KelvTwelve
KelvTwelve - 9/16/2023, 12:08 PM
@RolandD - idk, I always found Batman Returns to be the far more interesting movie than '89. From the addition of Selina as a complicated love interest over Vicky, Bruce feeling more active in the plot, and just how fun and vile Devito is as Penguin. The art direction and miniatures are amazing. I tend to go back and rewatch Returns over '89 all the time. But that said, it's not like Burton was known for being a comic fan. He gets a lot of praise for it now, but neither of his adaptations really strived to be accurate, and I would assume his Superman film would stray from the comics equally.

Still, I think it would've been more interesting than the JJ Abrams Superman: Flyby, or hell... Even Superman Returns.
