According to THR, a sequel to Joe Johnston's cult classic, The Rocketeer, is in early development as Disney. Though they refer to the project as a "reboot-sequel", the story is set in the original continuity and takes place 6 years after. This time, however, it won't be Cliff Secord blasting through the skies, as the movie is to "be headlined by a black female character."

Max Winkler and Matt Spicer will pen the script, with Brigham Taylor, Blake Griffin and Ryan Kalil on board as producers. The follow-up with actually be titled The Rocketeers, and you can check out a synopsis below.

Set six years after the original Rocketeer and after Secord has vanished while fighting the Nazis, an unlikely new hero emerges: a young African–American female pilot, who takes up the mantle of Rocketeer in an attempt to stop an ambitious and corrupt rocket scientist from stealing jetpack technology in what could prove to be a turning point in the Cold War.

Diversity for diversity's sake... I mean, I guess I applaud it, but at the same time, now that every franchise is doing this kind of thing, how will this differentiate itself from Star Trek: Discovery or the RiRi Williams Iron Man?

@MarkJira - "Diversity for diversity's sake"

Yes.. that's kinda the point.

@RorMachine - I'll save judgement for when trailers and synopses come out, as well as cast and director choices. But as a Puerto Rican, diversity for diversity sake often takes precedent over story and substance, and ends up hurting diversity more than it helps. With something like this it also screams laziness on the writer's behalf. It's much easier to make an established franchise/character a different race than it is to create something new and wonderful with a minority actor.

@RorMachine - actually I'm pretty sure it's to make it the norm so there doesn't have to be a press release every time they cast a black actor. Racism will only end when people are colour blind. The fact that they are directly looking for a black actress for a role is kind of the opposite of that which is a beautiful irony. Why is it such a big deal they're casting a black actress? Why isn't just their casting a great actress and she happens to be black. I've seen the word progressive so many times on articles this year. It's 2016 this should not be considered progressive, it should be normal.
