Carter Burwell Set To Score THOR: THE DARK WORLD

Hot off the heels of the Marvel sequel’s first poster reveal, official word is out that Thor composer Patrick Doyle is NOT returning to score The Dark World, but rather Carter Burwell. Check it out!

Marvel officials have confirmed the first visuals from Thor: The Dark World will be released next week, on Tuesday, April 23rd, ready to run theatrically with the international release of Iron Man 3. Holding us over until then, Disney recently released the first teaser poster and it reveals what’s been a mystery for quite some time: who will score the Alan Taylor-directed sequel? The composer of the original 2011 Thor film, Patrick Doyle, was said to be in early talks to return, but it appears that veteran Carter Burwell has been tapped to score the film, which is the second “Phase Two” expansion of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe! Beyond the first Twilight film and two sequels, Carter Burwell has composed the scores for True Grit, Fargo, Where the Wild Things Are, and No Country for Old Men. Thor: The Dark World would be Burwell’s first superhero flick, but what do you think?

Marvel Studios’ “Thor: The Dark World” continues the big-screen adventures of Thor, the Mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself. In the aftermath of Marvel’s “Thor” and “Marvel’s The Avengers,” Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos…but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all. Starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Stellan Skarsgård, Idris Elba, Christopher Eccleston, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Kat Dennings, Ray Stevenson, Zachary Levi, Tadanobu Asano and Jaimie Alexander with Rene Russo & Anthony Hopkins as Odin, “Thor: The Dark World” is directed by Alan Taylor, produced by Kevin Feige, from a story by Don Payne (credit not final) and screenplay by Christopher Yost and Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely (credit not final) and is based on Marvel’s classic Super Hero Thor, who first appeared in the comic book “Journey into Mystery” #83 in August, 1962. “Thor: The Dark World” is presented by Marvel Studios. The executive producers are Louis D’Esposito, Alan Fine, Stan Lee, Victoria Alonso, Craig Kyle and Nigel Gostelow. The film releases November 8, 2013, and is distributed by Walt Disney Studios.

Oh man... I hate when these things happen. I don't think I ever listened to any of Burwell's scores so I cannot jugde him, but I REALLY HOPE he keeps the more iconic Asgard and Thor's themes because that's what connects this movie with the first.

Well, crap. On one hand, I LOVED Patrick Doyle's score for the first movie... but on the other, Carter Burwell isn't all that bad a composer (I loved his score for The Hudsucker Proxy). So I guess we'll just have to wait and see if this is a good move or not...

(I just hope they keep Alan Silvestri as the composer when they do Avengers 2. That is MANDATORY.)

omg marvel needs to stick with the same composers. SUPERHEROES NEED THEME SONGS. Avengers would have been truly great if when each hero made their entrance they just played a little bit of their score. thats it! Stupid Silvestri used captains theme through the whole thing, but no one elses. It's like making the justice league, and when superman shows up, you get.... a bunch of whatever. Iron Man has no theme (ACDC doesnt count), Hulk has one, but it wasnt played in avengers, and now Thor probably will have his Asgard theme replaced.

HANS ZIMMER NAILED THE NEW SUPERMAN THEME. Same key as the old one, its got the driving percussion which reminds you of the old theme(which actually lines up in places with the old drum line when you sing it to speed), and the last 4 long notes before superman's take off are actually the last notes of the krypton theme.
PERFECTION.

@Marvelpsycho - It is hilarious, because you've done your bit of trolling often in the past. And you have the nerve to call me out? Please homer. And yes, I will be seeing Iron Man 3. ;)

Argh. The inconsistency in music is one of my few annoyances with the MCU. So far only Captain America has had his theme repeated in a follow-up film (THE AVENGERS, albeit quoted very briefly).

I enjoy it when composers return to score sequels and create variations on their previous themes. But look at IRON MAN. He's got 4 different themes now, by 4 different composers.

I'm glad Doyle is not returning, his score for Thor IMO was the weakest of the Phase 2 films.

This is shaping up very nicely.

BTW you're on a roll DCMARVELFRESHMAN, keep up the good work.

@hartley07 @NoAssemblyReqd

Exactly! I've been upset about this for awhile! For a company who's main selling point is continuity, it's kind of screwy to change the composer with each movie.

I loved the first Iron Man score, it was just so original and perfect for the character. And then the sequel came out and it had WAY less heavy guitar in it. And didn't even have the same themes.

I'm all for having different composers for each hero, but stay consistent with the sequels!

I was also kind of upset that Alan Silverstri didn't include more themes from the other movies as well. I hope he returns too.

The DC Trollanites are getting pretty desperate now, aren't they? Oh wells can't blame them, MCU is setting ablaze. Deal with it.
