Proving further that it will be a success at the North American box office, Marvel's Thor has taken in a total of $83 million this weekend alone across the international box office market, readily claiming the #1 spot worldwide and is currently the biggest opening weekend by far. From THR.com:

Director Kenneth Branagh’s interpretation of a Stan Lee comic book about an otherworldly renegade warrior defending planet earth opened No. 1 in the U.K. and Ireland ($9 million from 500 situations over five days), in France ($8.1 million from 579 locales), South Korea ($5.7 million from 513 spots), Italy ($5.5 million from 455 locations) and Spain ($5 million from 377 situations).

Thor also recorded first place openings in several smaller markets including Taiwan ($2.1 million from 58 sites for a per-screen average of $36,206), Singapore and the Philippines. In Vietnam, the opener yielded $308,000 from 19 sites, which Paramount said was a three-day debut record for the market.

So far, Thor has tallied an overall foreign gross of $93 million. The Marvel Ent. outing opened last round in Australia where this time it drew a second-weekend tally of $3.3 million from 226 locations, a 42% from the opener, hoisting the Down Under cume to $13.1 million.

Thor electrifies American theaters May 6th, later this week!

who cares, why are people so excited about a company making a ton of money. it does not interest me at all nor does it give me any benefits.

*sigh* The world we live in where people are more concerned about whether the movie is a hit or a bomb than the actual quality of the film itself.

That is really good! The more money the more likely of a sequel, and a sequel with a nice budget. Also, the more likely of other Marvel characters getting a movie; Doctor Strange etc.

Mainstream@ According to the reviews to date it is a quality film.

Considering all the marketing campaign in the states, I would think it will do well. You can't walk into many retail stores without seeing some type of Thor promotional item.

its been confirmed his returning in the Avengers.

@mainstream05

have u seen Thor?, i have and Thor was a great quality movie so it does deserve the success.

Mainstream, from my point of view, we care because if it is a success, we get a sequel. If it's good, all the better for us. That means we get as good a sequel or an even better one, meaning the start of a franchise.

Look at "The Incredible Hulk". Good movie, not that successful money wise. No sequel yet, three years later. And I don't see one happening for another two to four years.

People like it when their favorite hero becomes a celebrity. A great film with a large box office gross generally means that the character will garner a lot of new fans. Just look at what happened to Iron Man after his film came out.

@marvel72, the gross is a double-edged sword... remember "Twilight: New Moon"? I know a lot of people personally HATED the movie and the book series in general - yet it still did bloody well at the box office. I personally couldn't STAND a movie so self-pandering in shallow drama about selfish desires created from the mind of a person who is just as shallow as well.

Good grosses can't really tell a good movie from a bad one at face value. I love THOR and most of the Marvel movie franchise in general, so I am one of those that hope they all do well.

It's the ones that did SO well but are pure crap that mar the "gross" mentality that high takes at the Box Office mean that it's a good film. I've seen lots of good movies that didn't do well, but are highly praised due to other factors. It may not be rocket science... but you still have to wonder at those WTF movies that had no business being a box office hit still make it big enough to spawn a sequel (and more) despite the fact some of them looked like they were made for brainless lemmings with an attention span shorter than a flea's orgasm.
