Thor: Love and Thunder will follow Jane Foster's transformation into the Mighty Thor, and while the hero wielding a reformed Mjolnir in the movie is no secret, we get a much closer look at the legendary hammer here. The scientist's costume is also showcased in this promotional photo from the Marvel Studios blockbuster, and it seems fair to say the design looks pretty much perfect.

With hardly any leaks and even fewer bogus rumours floating around online, Thor: Love and Thunder looks set to be the first MCU movie in some time where we're heading into the theater knowing little to nothing.

As a result, Jane's transformation remains something of a mystery to us beyond a handful of set photos that appeared to show her visiting a monument for Odin located in New Asgard. That's also where the remains of Mjolnir lie, and as additional videos taken by nearby fans and paparazzi showed Thor's old flame floating in the sky, we're guessing this is where she gains her powers.

In other news, @bigscreenleaks has learned Thor: Love and Thunder's official runtime, and the movie will clock in at 1:58:34 with credits. That makes it one of Marvel Studios' shortest movies in some time, though it's possible they've learned from the rather bloated runtime of Eternals and decided to return to a more concise style of storytelling moving forward. We'll see.

Take a closer look at the MCU's Mighty Thor below and keep checking back here for the latest on the God of Thunder's new movie over the next couple of weeks.

The movie finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor.

Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.

Directed by Taika Waititi, the movie stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Tessa Thompson, Russell Crowe, Jaimie Alexander, Chris Pratt, Karen Gillan, and Sean Gunn among others.

Thor: Love and Thunder is set to be released in theaters on July 8, 2022.

@SonOfAGif - I dig the metal armor style helmets, but honestly I really just wanna see Chris wearing this in his final battle in his last Thor movie, whenever that may be. With how diverse and exaggerated the MCU has become, I think Chris could pull it off.

@TheHumanSpider2 -
Decreased runtimes means they can cram in more showings of this terrible film in the hopes of making a return on investment off primarily from the initial opening weekend.

I'm not sure why you trust Taika after Ragnarok though...

Exactly, and MoM already suffered from that

Keep these movies under two hours except for origins and team ups. They never have enough story to tell anyways

@bobevanz - Totally! I prefer that to feel it a bit tiring in the 2nd to third act, been experiencing this feeling for a while in superhero films lately.

We need tighter, shorter films. Blockbusters sometimes run of out of story but include nonsense to keep things going.
Spock0Clock

@GhostDog - I think the difference between being too short and too long is often very subtle stuff (maybe 5 minutes of editing out shoe-leather or pauses between lines of dialogue in a two hour movie can make all the difference in the world). When we start asking for 15 or 20 minutes more (enough space for an entire subplot), it's because the movie feels incomplete.

Like the original Iron Man was the perfect length for the material they had. The quiet scenes felt quiet, the painful scenes went on a little too long in exactly the right way to make the pain feel real, and the quick light scenes were appropriately breezy. It was a 126 minute movie edited to 126.

Some movies need more, even if they're quite long (I think Spider-Man NWH and Eternals could have used some extra scenes to flesh out some minor characters) while even some short movies seem to be filling time with fluff. I don't envy editors trying to bring out the best from a big batch of material.

But I do envy screenwriters. Apparently they can send lots of scripts out the door half-baked and still keep their jobs.

@Spock0Clock - I think that you have a good take on it here. For me, it's really based on how engaged that I am with the movie as to whether or not I'd like more or less of it. Like for "The Batman" it took us three nights to make it through it (although I was fairly into it, I had a wife and 2 little girls watching as well, and we were only watching for an hour at a time at the end of the night), but with Spidey:NWH I could have easily watched another hour of that. I guess that it's just the pacing of the movie itself and what the movie is doing with that time. Obviously, action-heavy movies tend to seem to fly by whereas movies that are more "detectivey" seem to crawl by because of their nature (I seem to remember "Se7en" seeming like it took 2 weeks and a federal holiday to watch).

But you raise a good point: those film editors are pretty much "damned if you do and damned if you don't" because if they cut a film too short the fans yell about needing more time to flesh out certain characters or plot points, however if they go too long then the movie is called "bloated", so sucks to be them I guess. Hope they get paid well.
GhostDog
GhostDog - 6/22/2022, 12:00 AM
@Spock0Clock - another reason Iron Man is one of the few “perfect” transcendent blockbusters. In a genre that often doesn’t know when to be quiet or slow down, it did.

Editors have the toughest job. Back when I tried to purse the ever harrowing and cliche film dream, I wanted to get into editing after school. I had a heavy concentration in it when film was my major. A professor used to say to me that editing isn’t difficult, but doing it exceptionally well is a true skill that is developed through building up editing muscle. Keep at it consistently, you'll get "stronger.”

Guess the pacing will be as sharp as Ragnarok, which is nice but...well, fingers crossed.

But seriously, take the first...i dunno, 15 minutes of Ragnarok? Note how many times they change the location.
Thor goes from point A to B to C in a very short time.
