Thor: The Dark World was a troubled production. The picture's director Alan Taylor and Marvel Studios didn’t share the same vision, so it’s not surprising that the final cut left the audience with rather mixed feelings, to say the least. Many fans have also wondered why it took Marvel so long do deliver a main female villain on the big screen.
According to Kevin Feige, the Asgardian goddess of death was supposed to debut way back in 2013. In an interview with Slashfilm, the producer revealed that “
Hela was almost the villain in Thor 2. It didn’t happen for various reasons”. We can only guess what “various reasons” meant, but it’s a rather safe bet that Isaac “Ike” Perlmutter who used to oversee Marvel Studios didn’t like the idea, as he axed the female villain from Shane Black’s
Iron Man 3.
Despite waiting so long, Feige doesn’t seem to be concerned about this situation:
“thank God it didn’t [happen] because now we have Cate Blanchett and Taika doing it”. It’s hard not to share his enthusiasm after seeing Thor: Ragnarok. Blanchett created an incredibly powerful, independent, but also charismatic and sympathetic villain who doesn’t kneel before anyone, even the God of Thunder.
