Ok, you all know I'm not a Bay fan. Did he win me over with his latest 'splosion fest? Click for my take on his giant robot threequel. Some Spoilers ahead..

Review Opinion

For me, this movie is a very difficult one to review properly. Whenever anyone tries to point out Michael Bay's GLARING inadequacies as a director you get met with this; "Well, you don't go into a Michael Bay movie for the story, acting, script, dialog, editing etc etc" Yes yes, I get that. He's an action director and we pay to go see his action right? Well see here is my problem with that; if I don't give a shit about the characters or the story, then I don't give a shit about the action. Why should I? Am I going to be on the edge of my seat as Sam and talking sex doll are clinging to the side of a building perilously close to death when A) I know they are not going to be hurt anyway, and B) even if they were I wouldn't care. Sure it's technically a brilliantly shot movie and the special effects are second to none. And if that is all you care about you will love it.

I'm not going to bother with the plot, I don't see why I should when Bay didn't. In fairness, it's nowhere near as nonsensical and convoluted as ROTF but it's still just your basic "Go get this before they do, use that this way" rubbish. Hey, I'm happy enough with a paint by numbers plot in a movie like this, but they can't even keep from making a balls of that! We are talking about a movie where in a scene towards the end when the Autobots are being exiled from Earth, Sam explains that they have no way of leaving the planet. Literally about 20 mins earlier we see Optimus Prime leave a ship on the [frick]ing Moon to rescue Sentinel. And that is only one example, the movie is rife with this shit. Also, The man with the worst taste in music in Hollywood continues to torture us with his cheesy pop soundtrack when ever we are supposed to be feeling sad or romantic. Puke. Doesn't bother you? Ok, how about the performances. They aren't terrible. The problem isn't the acting exactly, just the characters. I actually really enjoyed the first Transformers movie. And not just for the action, I thought Sam Witwicky was a relatable, rootable for hero and I was even a little emotionally invested in the story. But between then and now Bay(or more accurately screen writer Ehren Kruger) has turned Sam into a petulant, bad tempered, selfish little c~nt. I HATED him in this movie. His new squeeze(fabulously leggy model turned "actress" Rosie Huntington Whitely) is there for one reason only; so Bay can lasciviously camera rape her. Get this, one scene has Sam's Mom uses the line "Oh what a gorgeous box" while the camera pans to Whitely's face. Cos this one is, y'know, for the kids. Anyway, she's crap. You will miss Megan Fox. There are also a number of cameos from actual proper actors in this. John Malcovich plays Sam's new boss in what has to be the most pointless sub plot in movie history. He get's a couple of laughs I guess. Frances McDormand is very good actually, she plays the new Government liaison for the Autobots. John Turturro reprises his role from the last two movies and manages to be funny also. But Alan Tudyk, as much as I like him usually, is just annoying and brought on simply because Bay thinks camp men with foreign accents are amusing. Then we have Josh Duhamel and Tyrese Gibson. Non entities. Patrick Dempsey pops up too, not bad..actually part of one plot twist I didn't see coming.

But what about the most important thing, the Transformers themselves? As always they are awesome to look at. But character wise? In the first movie Optimus Prime was a tough warrior yes, but also wise and noble. In this he is basically just a merciless, inarticulate thug. He even sulks at one point. Optimus Prime SULKS! The others are ok, it's kind of hard to tell sometimes because even their dialog and motivations are all over the place. One of the Autobots, a veteran of the previous movies, dies at one point and not a single mention is made of it. Nobody seems to care. Are we supposed to? Then we have Bumblebee doing his usual radio speak shtick. There is a scene involving he and Sam towards the end that might have been moving if Bay had the balls to shock us. Megatron pops up despite dying twice now. New addition Shockwave is pretty cool, but Soundwave is wasted. The focus of the plot, Sentinel Primes, is interesting throughout and it's great to hear Leonard Nimoy's voice again. Maybe if they had more screen time, and the majority of the almost 3 fracking hour running time wasn't spent on the various moron humans in the movie. But it must be said, a good chunk of time is also spend on the pretty damn amazing action. That brings me to the good stuff.

The final battle in this movie goes on for almost an hour. It's an assault on your eyeballs. It's actually unlike anything I have seen from a special effects standpoint. Visually I cannot fault the movie. The 3D is also great although one or two shots when there are humans and Transformers involved didn't work so well. But generally when there is action there will be jaws dropping. One scene with a bunch of soldiers sky diving into the fray is especially well done. I may have gone a bit easier on this movie if we were at least provided with some kind of resolution or dramatic ending. It's the same crap as last time. No good guy casualties, all the bad guys dead. Optimus voice-over about how they will always be ready for new threat. I'm telling you, he's gonna make another one. And that will be four hours long and feature actual camera insertion into whatever piece of female furniture he brings in this time.

Great stunts, great effects, great battles, car chases, gunfights, fist fights. Bad movie. Like I said if you really don't care about the other stuff at all you will love Transformers 3, I highly recommend it. My star rating reflects this. Depending on your perspective you can either bring it up to 5 or diminish it to zero. Was it better than the last one? I actually don't know, like I said I'm not sure what I witnessed can even be described as a proper movie! It's a force of nature, a directionless hurricane. How do you stick a rating on a brainless natural disaster? The nicest thing I can say is that I was sufficiently impressed, even awed at times by the effects and the action not to hate it.

Damn. I saw two other reviews that said the EXACT same thing. I'm tempted to just skip the first hour and check in late. Transformer movies have always been crap to me because of so much human involvement. If it was like that in the 80s, it would not have made it to present times. If there is a 4th, go back to basics and get the human cheese and pre-teen eye candy out of the way! These Hollywood guys are idiots...

Just what I expected. Same shit from Bay. Good thing I didn't go see it then.

Brutal but honest. Nice review ROR.

The first 105 minutes sucked, but the Autobot/Human resistance effort to take back Chicago was so freaking worth it.

Lmfao!! I don't think I've seen you make this many spelling errors in an article before! I'm assuming it's simply due to the red mist Michael "special effects porn" Bay has drawn over your eyes. And I don't blame you as we seem to feel the same way when it comes to this director.

Good honest review, as always.

I really enjoyed the movie. This is the best review so far, though. Once it sinks in, you do notice the little things that Bay STILL can't stray from. Sometimes I wonder how much he analyzes his final cut. If at all. But, like someone said, this isn't Shawshank, it's eye candy..Bay will get some visual effects award, and, not shockingly, it's probably all he's expecting..Once again, great review ROR, I enjoy reading your stuff

plasticman - 6/30/2011, 11:35 AM
I actually see your point, Ror. You're right. Movies like this are hard to rate. When I consider this movie a B or a 4 out of five stars it is because or walking into the movie knowing that story elements will be missing. In comparison outside of the world of Bay's action packed funhouse it does leave a lot of room for improvement such as being in Washington DC, ending up in Florida, and up and moving to Chicago for the final battle for no particular reason. There were holes in retrospect that does bring this down.

I still look forward to Spielberg stepping into the ring and blowing Bay's trilogy of "meh" out of the water!

this is transformers! Not social network, Black Swan, True grit or not even super 8. If you're analyzing it that hard then you truly are stupid. Theres no hidden meanings in this movie, no symbolism, it's just an action movie. Everybody go see this movie. Great action and a great way to end the trilogy.
Best of the summer so far
1) Thor-mainly due to anticipation of avengers crossover
2) xmen first class-fresh take on the franchise
3)transformers-just drop down epic
4)super 8-made me feel like a kid again
5)Green lantern-no comment needed.

@Starlight...exactly. I LOVE how people over anaylize these movies. They are giant, talking robots, for [frick] sake!!! It won't win any major Academy Awards, but it was a lot of fun!!! Normally Ror, I agree with about 99% of what you write. I'm actually sad that this time I don't...oh well. You and Tea are still the best guys in this place!!!!

Every old G1 fan always brings up the thing about having too much human involvement, I wonder if any of them actually think about that before they say it?

Realistically, the 80's cartoons I watched back in the day were aimed at 8 year old BOYS! There were no female robots until the ONE in the '86 movie. There were no females in the show just Spike and his dad. And then no matter where the Autobots and Decepticons fought, the military kinda just remained absent, even in the '86 movie where the battle went on all night, no human involvement except Spikes young son who had no mother!?

Bay has to make a live action flick from a concept based on toys! To do these things with photo realistic CGI is damn expensive when they only occupy a short screen time. If you extend their screen time then you have to massively increase your budget! You're looking at around $500 million at least for just the FX when these film normally budget at just over $200 mill. And then you loose the majority of your world wide audience by forcing a tale on them with no human element for them to relate to and worse than that an even less realistic scenario with no world military involved either despite huge alien robots levelling every place they fight!

Worse than fans making statements like this without thought for real business side of movies is the fact that they actually think if just fanboys like them go to see the movie, it would be a hit! This alone is the single most insane element that drives the average fanboy, they have no realization of how small their fanbase is in comparison to revenue generated by the average joe public.

When the first TF movie came out so many fans said it would flop because "no REAL fan would go see that", they considered it not canon, "Gayformers", etc etc. Here we are 4 years and 2 more films later and I'm still waiting for this fan-prophecy to materialise!

The one TF animated film ever to hit the big screen back in 1986 was what every fan went to see.. and this is how it compares:

Transformers the movie (1986) Domestic box office = $5,849,647

Transformers (2007) Domestic box office $319,246,193
Transformers (2009) Domestic box office $402,111,870 (during a recession)
Transformers (2009) Domestic box office $42,815,000 (after one day + midgnight showings)

That's the $ power of a fanbase to a studio exec without adapting it for greater appeal!

lol, I'm sorry but that argument is RIDICULOUS! Who said anything about True Grit or [frick]ing Academy Awards? I'm reviewing the movie in the context of it's genre which is an action/special effects block buster. Cos it has giant talking robots I should go easier on it? Green lantern is just a movie about cgi aliens with magic rings..why doesn't that get a pass? What about Uwe Boll movies? They are just low budget video game adaps, fun right?

CapFan79 - 6/30/2011, 11:59 AM
Gotta say I liked it! Liked Rosie far better (not a great actress but charming where Fox was just a bitch). I actually liked that Sam had an attitude in this. He felt more real to me. After everything he's done he's still got issues so I'd be pissed too.

I thought the story overall was fine. I liked Tuturro better in this one but the scene with the TV interview was uneccessary (as was Tudyks accent). I agree Jeong was more weird than funny but thought Malkovich was just being Malkovich ("malkovich malkovich").

With regard to your issue about the Autobots spaceship, they went to the moon before Sam became involved so he wasn't aware they had a ship. Even if you say "well, he is aware they went to the moon and got Sentinel so should know they have a ship" that also doesn't mean Sam should assume they have a ship that can traverse space beyond our galaxy (the space shuttle hasn't gone beyond the Earth's orbit) as we have been to the moon before.

do you honestly think anyone is going to see a movie filled with just robot dialogue? no human interest piece? people need to have an emotional attachment to be involved. Other than the true fanboy who has known this propetry for 25 plus years who is going to have an emotional attachment to this movie?

This movie was really bad. It did nothing for me. I was irritated at the stupidity of it throughout the entire thing. It's beyond me how people find this kind of movie fun. I have fun watching good movies. And yes, summer blockbusters can be good movies too. Look at Iron Man. It's a fun summer blockbuster about a guy in a robot suit, yet it isn't completely stupid and is actually well acted and written. I can play video games if I want to see robots beating the shit out of each other, without having to watch Shia trying to find a job.

Maybe Michael Bay should rethink his career as a second unit director? He's good at action, but terrible at everything else.
Maybe Marvel could use him, everyone says their action is lacking, maybe Michael 'Splosions' Bay should do Marvel's action sequences
PartyHard
PartyHard - 6/30/2011, 12:06 PM
@Thevenominside Look at WALL-E. People can have emotional attachment to the Transformers. And the human interest piece could have been something way better. Like why not just have it be the NEST people and the Autobots? Cut out Shia completely.

Preach it Ceejay, Its supposed to be fun, loud, nostalgic, even annoying! You name one summer action blockbuster with similar box office success without these elements based on a toy! I din't know they go watch these movies in order to experience a mental Rubik's cube!

Sucks to be them!

people forget that if there were giant robots fighting on Earth, it would be noticed by humans. there HAS to be humans in it.

also, the other big argument is that they don't look like they did in the cartoons. really? right, because it would really make a lot of sense to have the autobots show up on earth in present times and pick 30 year old vehicles to transform into.

"Megatron would be so much cooler if he transformed into...a handgun. y'know, instead of a tank or alien fighter jet."

"Starscream should be an F-15 instead of the state of the art F-22!"

do people even think about that when they make those ridiculous comments?

i could go on and on. these movies might not have the best plots, but the look, and transformations are the least of their problems.
