The Aiel Will Take Center Stage In THE WHEEL OF TIME's Third Season Which Will Cover THE SHADOW RISING

Rafe Judkins, the showrunner for Prime Video's The Wheel of Time television adaptation, made an appearance at New York Comic-Con this past weekend to confirm the Aiel Waste and Sea Folk for season 3.

In season 3 of Prime Video's The Wheel of Time, prepare to travel to the  Three-fold Land and the sacred city of Rhuidean.

Showrunner Rafe Judkins provided the much-anticipated confirmation that The Shadow Rising, book 4 of Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson's epic series, will be the primary focus of the next season of the show.

The fandom is now turning its attention to when season 3 could potentially be released.  Season 2 and 3 were both greenlit by Amazon at the same time so fans of the series are hoping for a short turnaround. The lengthy two year wait between seasons 1 and 2 was viewed as exceptionally cruel.

At NYCC, Judkins also revealed a slightly unexpected detail that fans should expect some storylines from book 5, The Fires of Heaven, to be explored.

Some of book 5 being covered is somewhat surprising as The Shadow Rising is one of the densest entries in the series, coming in at a whopping 1,007 pages.  In comparison, the Eye of the World consisted of 782 pages, and The Great Hunt clocked in at 706 pages.

This past weekend, Judkins told the crowd at New York Comic Con, "Every season, we sit down in the writers room and one of the things that we do at the very beginning is pick out a couple of the stories that we have to carve out a space to make a whole episode for."

He continued, "We think it’s worth it because those stories will really stand out to an audience, especially that didn’t read the books. They’re given that time, and it’s carved out, so they can really follow that character on that journey."

More interestingly, Judkins divulged, "The first season was more of the group journey that had the one big Moraine episode, but for seasons two and three, we’ve really carved out two episodes of season that can really be devoted characters.  This season was a really big Egweyne and Nynaeve season for us. Next season is a really big Rand [and] Perrison season for us. There are always different characters who are rising in importance."

Don't worry Mat Cauthon fans, your day is coming. Post Shadow Rising, Mat's story really picks up as the Son of Battles.

The Wheel of Time is an Equity-cast show, meaning the ensemble that comprises the show's main roles are all members of the European SAG-AFTRA equivalent. As such, filming on season 3 was not impacted by the ongoing Hollywood actor's strike and the production is currently underway in South Africa.

The lives of five young villagers change forever when a strange and powerful woman arrives, claiming one of them is the child of an ancient prophecy with the power to tip the balance between Light and Dark forever. They must choose whether to trust this stranger – and each other – with the fate of the world before the Dark One breaks out of His prison, and the Last Battle begins.

The Shadow Rising is one of the greatest fantasy books ever written.

The show certainly stepped up in quality from season 1 to season 2, but it still has issues. Some of it is questionable writing decisions, but also there are pacing issues. Condensing these massive books into 8 episode seasons hurts the end product.

Given how much occurs in that book, hopefully the episode count can be extended beyond 8 episodes.

Also, stop taking away Rand’s biggest moments. He’s the damn main character. Yes, they are all good in their own right, but the Dragon needs his time to shine.

@mountainman - good to know Season 2 is better. S1 felt just kinda there to me. The story wasn't all that special, the fantasy wasn't that fantastical, and I just couldn't buy into the leads all looking crisp and clean like they had showers and a good night rest all the time

@bkmeijer1 - The first book (and first season) are very much an homage to Fellowship of the Ring. The second season starts becoming its own thing, but it’s really in the fourth book that this next season is based on that Wheel of Time really gets going.

The costumes are still cleaner than your average fantasy show. Season 1 was a 6/10 to me. 2 was a solid 7.5 and i might rank it higher if I didn’t constantly compare to the books. Many people who haven’t read the books really loved it.

*Very mild spoiler following*

This is because this doesn’t take place in a mid evil era, it’s “post apocalyptic” in the way that the world used to be far more advanced than ours, suffered a big cataclysm, then is rebuilding.

@mountainman - good thing I know nothing about the book. I might check out this season too, and by then I probably forgot about the setting anyway (if looks and functions like a medievial setting, I just take it as such)

@bkmeijer1 - Yeah I get the clean clothes argument. That explanation is just how I justify it in my head.

@mountainman - I guess that works. It's just a thing that I pay attention to really quickly. Same thing bothered me in Rings of Power, Willow and The Witcher (except Geralt) too. House of the Dragon is the only recent fantasy show so far that didn't.

@bkmeijer1 - House of the Dragon is the best fantasy on TV right now. If Wheel of Time continues with its season over season improvements it can be great as well.

HBO is just on another level with their productions. Apple is getting there too with some of their shows. But Amazon and Netflix have some catching up to do.

@mountainman - We usually have pretty close opinions on things, so I'll check out season 2. I had no intention of watching it after Season 1 was such a disappointment. Being someone that's read the books, it was mostly bad with a few good moments.

I'll give season 2 a chance.

@CorndogBurglar - You still have to turn off your book brain to an extent. It’s streamlined and some things are changed. Some of my favorite moments from the book didn’t make it in, but that somewhat has to be expected in an adaptation.

But…

- The teen drama of season 1 is gone
- The Forsaken are absolutely awesome. Both Ishamael and Lanfear are done very well and I’d say given even more to chew on than the earlier books give them. Liandrin also really shines.
- The Seanchan are adapted well, including how one of the main characters (no spoilers here) “interacts” with them
- By the end of the season, I felt like all six of the main kids embody their book characters. There is a little bit of “fixing” they did from season one in the first half, but I’d say we have the Rand, Mat, Perrin, Nyneave, Egwene, and Elayne that we’d expect to by the end of the season. New Mat actor is great.

Still some dumb changes, questionable writing, and things left out that I wanted to see, but it was far more enjoyable.

@mountainman - yeah, Netflix and Amazon try to make it too polished. HBO and Apple actually make it feel realistic, even if it's in fantastical or sci-fi settings.

@bkmeijer1 - Yeah it’s something in how they are shot and the cinematography. It feels more movie like.

I really enjoyed Silo and Foundation on Apple and that Monarch show looks great too.

@mountainman - read good things about it, and with Monatch coming up I think I finally gave enough reasons to subscribe to Apple as well (for just a few months).

As for HBO shows, it's also production and costume designs that helps sell them really well imo. It's believable to their world. Even though it's not real history, it feels historically accurate.

@bkmeijer1 - HBO has always been top notch. Wife and I are going through some of their classics right now. Band of Brothers, The Pacific, and now The Wire. I also just started Righteous Gemstones, which is a while different thing, but also very well made. No other company has had so many consistently quality productions as HBO.

@mountainman - indeed. Even despite some questionable decisions of late, it still offers the best content imo

@EZBeast - Season 1 was ok, season 2 is pretty good. Don't read the books before watching or you'll be pulling your hair out.

@EZBeast - It seems like most people who haven’t read the books like it. If you like fantasy, it is based on the second most popular fantasy series ever behind Lord of the Rings.

First season has some issues, partially caused by COVID delays, but second season improved quite a bit.

Here’s your brief rundown:

It’s a world with reincarnation and a gendered based magic system. The male magic has been tainted so all users go crazy. This has led to a matriarchal society. The female magic users have a quasi political group called Aes Sedai. They are protectors and shady at the same time. The story starts where a prophesied savior is sought out, several villagers who may be this savior are taken away, and adventures ensue.

It has the large world and politics of game of thrones set in a more traditional fantasy world like lord of the rings. The magic system is element based like Avatar, but magic users are not restricted to one element.

@ModHaterSLADE - Given that books 4-6 are some of the best in the series, I’m hoping the next few seasons can deliver.

Season 2 was much better than the first. Lanfear was a standout for me in s2, she was fantastic.
