Robert Kirkman's
The Walking Dead comic series has sparked critical appraise leading to a television show and a video game series based off of the stories that lie within the comics. The video game has so far garnered extremely positive acclaim and the TV series as fared just as well if not better, making it through two seasons and about to begin with a third. Ernest Dickerson, who has directed six episodes of the show including the upcoming premiere of the third season, sat down with AMC to share a few words. In the following excerpts from the interview, Dickerson speaks about what is the most exciting thing about directing the season 3 premiere, what it means to make an episode work, and what the tone of the newest season represents to him. Read on below:
Dickerson reveals what excites him the most about directing the
premiere:
I'm really excited for the fans to see a growth in the characters that they know...And in this episode, we're introducing Michonne in all of her glory. We get to meet her, and I know a lot of people have been looking forward to that.
What it takes for Dickerson to make an episode of The Walking Dead:
It always starts with the script. It starts with the writers. I was fortunate in the first episode to have a really slam-bang script with a lot of action. Hopefully I make it cinematic. What I love about doing this show is each episode is like doing a mini-movie; it's different than any other television show I've ever done.
The director on the tone of the newest season:
It's human drama but after an apocalypse. It's human drama after society has completely disintegrated... Our people have figured their way through one menace but now there's the human menace, and now they're taking advantage of the fact that there's no law, there's no more government. Who can you trust? It's still dealing with pretty esoteric territory.
