Calling last year's success of The Walking Dead a surprise doesn't even begin to describe the way AMC's zombie show ambushed fans and critics. With that in mind, last night's Season 2 premiere had gargantuan expectations and I must sadly report that the show fell a little short. Now the premiere was not a bad episode by any stretch of the imagination, far from it. The show picked up right where we left off from the Season 1 finale with the same intensity, imagery and ickiness that everyone loved. If anyone had fears that the show would drastically change after the departure of Frank Darabont, I think you can put those to rest. But therein lies our problem; in a 1hr-30min premiere, you're expecting to be astounded, disgusted, or at the very least treated to something besides the norm. The premiere just felt like another, regular episode of the show, nothing truly exceptional or extraordinary occurred. Tack on the fact that it was really an 1 hour long episode, stretched out by incessant commercial breaks and you are really left a tad exasperated by what AMC presented.

Now please be advised that when I'm assessing the Season 2 premiere, I'm thinking back to the premiere of Season 1. The very first episode of Walking Dead, "Days Gone Bye" had a tautness and a sense of urgency that "What Lies Ahead" simply lacked. Now as Season 1 progressed, the subsequent episodes lost the opener's urgency and the pacing of the show became this meandering waltz where the group just sort of wandered while surviving random encounters with the living impaired. For the premiere of Season 2, I was expecting the show to recapture the urgency of the previous premiere but instead we got more waltzing. Luckily, the best aspects of the show are still intact and shined through to raise the level of enjoyment. The dialogue is superb, the cinematography is great (by TV standards) and the characters continue to develop and evolve. I was relieved to learn that Jon Bernthal's character, Shane Walsh wouldn't continue to shamelessly pursue Rick's wife in such a lecherous fashion. The other main plot point from the Season 1 finale was also addressed to some extent with the interactions between Laurie Holden and Jeffrey DeMunn's characters. It will be interesting to see if Shane and Andrea do indeed slip away as discussed and the show is bisected into one group led by Rick and another led by Shane. We were treated to some fabulous zombie killing scenes in this episode, courtesy of everyday hand tools and the zombies themselves returned in all of their fabulous gore. The ending was also exceptional and goes a long way towards instilling some adrenaline into the episode. The camera work was great here and for a moment I thought the buck was going to turn out to be zombiefied. Instead, directors Ernest Dickerson and Gwyneth Horder-Payton gave us a surprise ending that all but guarantees that audiences will be tuning in next week.

The shows first 5 minutes are great as are the last 5 minutes. Unfortunately, what happens in the interim could occur in any regular episode of The Walking Dead and while that's definitely not a bad thing, I was expecting a lot more from a season premiere. Overall, I have to give the episode:

7.5/10

Here's a condensed recap of the premiere courtesy of AMC.

Andrea's character is the only one i have a beef with. Great start to a season. hope its sticks with the comic story line a little better then the last season.

Even though it is veering away from the source material with each episode, it is still a great show.

I wanted more from the first episode. I felt like there was a lot of dull space that lacked in anything to keep new viewers watching. 90 minutes was too long in this case because nothing really happened.

But then again, I wanted them to stumble into the housing development. I think that would have been more awesome of a season premiere.

@comicbookgoth - thought about it. don't think merle has the cunning to be that character.

I think the review on this series is one review. Mark Julian must not be fan,but had no problem telling us fans how is was a let down for us fans. I'm fan and got say your review kind of sucked. This was pretty good beginning,we all know there are Zombies, that is no big shocker, this isn't resident evil where zombies get weapons, and bigger and stronger.I will keep tuning in.

I like that it is veering away from the comics... for now I have no idea what to expect. It's like a brand new series of comics. which excites me.

I do think having both kids in danger, at the same time, same episode, was trite, and easy writing. but the tension of the zombies walking past was perfectly played. To me, it should have lasted 15 minutes longer and built the tension even more.

I LOVED the cutting up the one Zombie's stomach to check to see if the one kid's parts were inside it. it seemed to go on forever.. I was howling with laughter.

I just hope the killings don't go sooo smoothly that they become immune to the tension of their danger. I guess I want a lil of 28 days later to come into the mix and amp up the beat.

I still hold to the belief they'll make Merle the Governor's number 2 guy....also I am certain Merle will be the one who cuts the hand off Rick, they'll change it up and just have the governor give Merle the go-ahead rather than the Governor cut the hand off himself. I could see this, and I could see Daryll having to put down Merle, or Merle killin his own brother for not killing the other survivors in retribution for what they did to merle. That all seems to make the most sense to me.

the person who posted the picture from the comic above of the governor chopping off rick's hand already spoiled it before I did. Also, there are no real spoilers since the tv show plot is subject to whatever changes kirkman and amc's writers make for it. Had the person above not posted the photo from the comic of the governor chopping rick's hand off I wouldnt have made the post I did.

Addy Miller, the "little zombie girl" in THE WALKING DEAD Season One, is our "ghostly pageant princess" in our television pilot entitled GHOST TREK: THE KINSEY REPORT, winner of "Best Comedy" at Fright Night Film Fest. Addy's pic at Deviantart.com received over 13,000 hits yesterday! Wow! Go here to view: http://admiralj.deviantart.com/art/Forever-and-ever-204521080

Huge fan of the show and the comics. Last nights season premiere was definitely a let down. Make up is still outstanding, but the acting is atrocious at parts along some cringe worthy corny moments and dialogue.

Having read the books first, I really enjoyed the season 1 premiere as it was nearly frame for frame with the comic. As the series went on and the deviations from source material became more however, I had a harder time really geting into the story. All in all I'd say season 1 was just okay. That being said I think this episode is possibly the best one I've seen yet (with possible exception for the pilot). I look forward to more great story telling this season.

Also the talking dead was awesome. Chris Hardwick and Patton Oswalt are heroes of mine.

it does seem that the producers made the characters a little more careless and dumb if you will, so far anyway.

Kinda fu.cked up what happened to Carl and where the hell is that girl? Was quite alot of commercials tho

Pretty sure Merl will be the governer. I think that's part of why they are building his brother up so much, all he'll have to say is Merl was twice as good as he is and that'll provide instant contrast and validation.

ive never read the comic (yes it shames me) but the show is fantastic. .. my issue with the review,, they cut open a zombies stomach to see if it had eatin a 12 year old girl. think about that. and that was after they hid from a slow moving, hunting zombie herd. then they end up in the church! that was poignent. it ended with a gut shot child. the only complaint can be with the commercials, beyond that watch that show again and imagine, just for a second, half a second, that you are in a possition ware its a possability that you are searching a zombies gullet for a 12 year old girl. wow.
