THE WALKING DEAD Spinoff Is A Prequel?

The Walking Dead spinoff in development at AMC is reportedly a prequel, one that will focus on the early days of the pandemic and where the living still outnumber the undead.

The Walking Dead spinoff tv series

According to TV Line, their sources are hearing that the spinoff Walking Dead series in development at AMC is a prequel. The site reports, "There’s increasing buzz that the offshoot will be a prequel of sorts, one that would chronicle the early days of the epidemic and the effort to contain it." The original press release confirmed that Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd and David Alpert are serving as executive producers , with AMC Studios set to produce.

Unlike the current series which is based on the Image Comics ongoing monthly from Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard, the spinoff will feature an entire new cast of characters and storylines. AMC is aiming for a 2015 air date for the series. In a separate interview, Kirkman expounded further, saying the new series won't be set in Georgia.

Theoretically it could work, a series set during the time Rick (Andrew Lincoln) was in a coma and the world came to grips with the reality that the undead were roaming down suburban streets. Watching the American landscape change from the one we know currently to what it's become on The Walking Dead may be just enough to excite even the most jaded of fans. Not that The Walking Dead is suffering by any means, it's still the most watched show on television among adults 18-49.

How would this effect season two. Unless they only want one season. I just don't see that working out. I would be okay with it starting on day one. But having it only be set in the few days Rick was out would be hard to do. Unless they plan on making it almost like 24 each episode is only one hour of that day. Which that could be pretty cool. Getting to see how life changed in the first 24 hours would neat. That would make it difficult and interesting.

Watching the Walking Dead it always is the next day. So getting to see how people survive for an extra hour would be really cool.

A show about zombies walking the earth and everyone is in disbelief over lawns looking mowed. Ha!

@monkeyballs...it's fiction, bro...damn, ever wonder how the dead move with decaying muscles?! For [frick]s sake, the world is filled with retards!

Personally, I'd rather they not explore the "how it all happened" and leave it to our imaginations. They're likely to [frick] it all up, anyway:

Rick was in a coma for months, not days. I'm not sure how many months, but a whole lot happened in that time frame. Also, this series could actually start a bit before he even got shot. We don't really know how long it took for the epidemic to gain momentum and reach a critical point.

But it does seem like it would be extraordinarily limited in scope. I think they're just trying to capitalize off of the success of the current series. I'm worried that however well made the prequel series is, it's not a great idea. But time will tell.

Jesus H do i HATE prequels! Am i the ONLY one who was immediately turned off to this show after seeing its a prequel? its the lazymans way of workin in a universe when they're too scared or cheap to go all in.

Noone cares what happened before the zombies infested the earth, and attempting to show/explain it cheapens the whole experience.

so long as this means they can put the series back on track with the comic book fully, i'm cool with that.

Not against the concept but still it can only run so long. The show has a a limited time to cover.

It would be nice to use the idea that Frank Darabont had of showing the military trying to control Atlanta. The walker in the tank played by Sam Witwer was supposed to have a backstory.

Yeah I think different viewpoints would be great. Especially military. Tell stories of maybe a prisoner, military, medicine, and or stronger female lead. Maybe a more detailed story of the Governor. In a sense like the show Lost. To where people are on different sides of the coin and eventually overlap.

Meh. From the outset, it doesn't sound like a great companion concept. What I liked about the first series is that it was point A, then Rick's coma takes us immediately to point B. It's jarring, like one would expect this sort of disaster to be.

Having said that, perhaps this can give us some insight into what caused the walker plague to begin with. That's something they sortof [frick]ed by blowing up the CDC in the first season finale. Hopefully they can make it their own interesting thing, though, instead of just some kind of World War Z retread riding on TWD's coattails.

I haven't watched this all season and feel it has gone the same route as "Heroes": progressively worse since day one.

With that said, THIS spin-off/prequel idea actually sounds pretty good.

I'd actually prefer a prequel to the current show, honestly. It's kind of boring watching the current show because it focuses only on their life in prison. I want them to run and keep moving like they did in season 1. They could easily let the prequel collide with the existing show by introducing new characters that head somewhere else etc (and have both shows running independently).

Naaaaah.

Would prefer a parallel series in a different location (West coast?).

I've wanted to see the beginnings of the outbreak too, but interspersed with the current series as flashbacks or one-off episodes. The earlier seasons had more flashbacks -- I wish they were a regular part of the show.

Walking Dead has got to be one of the most boring shows that has ever had an audience reach critical mass.
Seriously, that show has so many viewers.
They even had a 'game' win game of the year... a game that plays itself won game of the year. The hype for this show is ridiculous.

AMC bought the rights to The Returned, so we're going to get an origin story nobody is expecting. These aren't viral outbreak zombies after all.

It sounds good but it would have been better as a mini series. I love The Walking Dead.
