DOCTOR WHO Showrunner Russell T Davies Reveals Season 14 Is Actually Season 1; Confirms Plans For Season 4

Returning Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies has revealed the upcoming fourteenth season is, in fact, the first in a new era for the long-running series and reveals which season he's working on now.

Russell T Davies' return to Doctor Who sent Whovians across the world into a frenzy of excitement, and while this marks his first time serving as the series' showrunner in over a decade, he has plans to stick around for the long haul.

During an interview with SFX (via SFFGazette.com), Davies revealed he's already planning season 3 and will later tackle a fourth batch of episodes. He's also confirmed that season 14 will, in fact, be season 1. Ncuti Gatwa's debut is clearly meant as the start of a new era for Doctor Who, with this holiday's 60th-anniversary specials likely serving as a bridge between the franchise's past and future.

"I'm planning season 3 now, there’s plans for season 4," he tells the site. "Absolutely. Who knows? Who knows. I'm not getting any younger."

"At the risk of sounding sanctimonious, but I really, really mean this - they were going to do this to the show anyway and I genuinely thought, 'It needs looking after,'" Davies added, making it clear his latest Doctor Who stint means a lot to him.

Everything we've seen from Davies' return to the franchise suggests the beloved series has been given a fresh lick of paint, and casting Hollywood stars like Jonathan Groff and Neil Patrick Harris is sure to increase interest among casual viewers and non-fans alike.

With the show set to find a home on Disney+ outside the UK, Doctor Who will soon have its biggest audience. What's said to be a significant budget increase should help it feel more in line with The Mandalorian and Star Trek: Discovery, for example, and the next few years promise to take the TARDIS to new heights.

In other news, it's been announced that a new Doctor Who special will air on BBC One in the UK later this month as part of the annual Children In Need charity telethon. David Tennant will star, likely setting the stage for what's to come when the show returns with "The Star Beast" on November 25.

We've also learned that a special behind-the-scenes making-of will be released on BBC iPlayer as part of an exclusive Doctor Who: Unleashed episode. Children In Need airs on November 17.

As noted, Doctor Who returns in November 2023 with three special episodes with Tennant as the Fourteenth Doctor to coincide with the 60th anniversary. Ncuti Gatwa's first appearance as the Fifteenth Doctor is also expected to air over the festive period.

Season 14 1 doesn't have a confirmed premiere date but is expected to premiere in early 2024.

Lmfao my god

In a world gone mad with reboots...

@TheVandalore - You're missing the point. The Doctor's existence is premised on 'reboots. It's a total reset every time the Time Lord regenerates. It's been 60 years now and every reboot, brings new actors, new ideas and new writers. RTD helmed the best of the episodes and he clearly cares deeply about the character so this is glorious . . .

@ZomZom - Depends how you'd define "reboot" - if it's a complete reset that completely ignores what came before (e.g. Batman Begins, Casino Royale) then Doctor Who has never done that.

But if you're using the term more loosely to describe a complete creative overhaul (e.g. blanket recast, new creative team, etc) without it discarding previous continuity then yeah that's probably the single largest reason Doctor Who has lasted 60 years (minus the 16 year hiatus) and that's exactly what seems to be happening this time too; Ncuti's Doctor is presumably still just as much the same character as William Hartnell's was back in 1963, rather than an entirely distinct version like Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man was to Tobey Maguire's.

So yeah, not really a reboot, more like a revamp/relaunch.

@AC1 - Agree with some of that but reboot still works for me as the Doctor's personality changes everytime as does his M.O. (yep, completely ignoring Jodie Whittaker's feeble take). So in short, good to have RTS back at the helm

Mixed feelings honestly…

Having it be “Series 1” certainly allows them to attract new viewers who might be checking out the show for the first time now that it will also be on D+ but it’s still in continuity with the other seasons so hopefully it doesn’t then rely on previous continuity too much (i think RTD is smart enough to know that).

However i personally feel it was also unnecessary and that if someone who checks out the show now and likes it enough can go back to Series 1 and watch it from there…

Alas , I guess who has the time nowadays and so it would be more appealing to new viewers to hop into the show if it was Series 1 then 14.

@TheVisionary25 - I like to think this is his way to change things (or ignore) bad ideas like that timeless child arc. Maybe the celestial toy maker is involved, idk

@braunermegda - I still don’t think the timeless Child was a bad idea conceptually…

I just don’t think it was executed very well sadly.

@braunermegda - you can just ignore that without renumbering. What's the point in brining all that 2005-present dr who to Disney Plus if ur gonna try and ignore it with a numbering change

@TheVisionary25 - I mean, it's the same thing they did when Christopher Eccleston became the Doctor. It was season 1 and at the same time it wasn't, but it was a perfect starting point. The show is at a place where I think it needs something like this. I was a big fan until Capaldi and then I lost interest and I haven't even seen anything of Jodie's Doctor, but I'm looking forward to Tennant and RTD's return. Hopefully they make me fall in love with the show again.

Probably a good idea. They need another easy jump on point for viewers similar to beginning of New Who or start of Matt Smith’s tenure.

Really excited to see RTD back in the drivers seat:

Doctor Who had a TLJ moment with The Timeless Child episode and that is still canon. This entire show is garbage now and RTD coming back won't be saving it. Teaming up with Disney is not gonna magically erase all the crap that has been done to Who for last 10 years. The show is nothing more than a political platform for activists now.
