ARROW: Here's Our Review Of Season 6 Episode 19 'The Dragon'

While this episode highlights some of the best from Kirk Acevedo this season, it also proves that this episode should've been part of this season a lot earlier.

'The Dragon' focuses on the main season villain and gives the character some long awaited character development. However, the episode does also fail in capturing the threat that is Ricardo Diaz.

In terms of acting, Kirk Acevedo was really good this episode, matter of fact anything I've said previously about him has pretty much been proven wrong here. I'm glad that Kirk had the freedom to act in the way that Ricardo Diaz is meant to be displayed. However, my issue with his character in this episode and just this season overall is that he simply isn't intimidating. Yes, I understand that he went crazy killing some Quadrant members, along with the son of a former member of the Quadrant but having him simply kill a few dudes in an episode just isn't good enough. While I did enjoy Acevedo's acting in this episode, he often sounds like he has a frog in his mouth and honestly that's not the fault of the actor considering he's doing what he's told. Maybe it's the fact that he allows Black Siren to speak to him with disrespect or even just from other people in general, it just reduces the level of intimidation for the character.

Another point I need to make is that Ricardo Diaz is a master-martial artist in the comics, however, on Arrow he seems to specialise mainly with a firearm. We've had very few scenes when Diaz fought hand-to-hand and even then he wasn't anything special compared to all the previous villains on this show. This honestly makes me question how he's going to defeat Oliver in the hand-to-hand fight they're going to have or if he should really stand a chance.

As someone who is a fan of his character in the comics, I did enjoy his backstory in this episode as it followed the comics quite closely or at least more so than any other villain on this show. The reason I liked it so much though was because it translates well for the overall tone and mood of this show, it doesn't feel out of place or unnatural. However, in Arrow-style, somehow the episode had to go one step forward and another step back. The whole ordeal with the Quadrant is something that felt weird to say the least. This group is being made out as if they're the equivalent of the Court of Owls which is just plain stupid. For those who have followed Green Arrow's Rebirth run would know that the Ninth Circle are the equivalent of the Court in the comics. Why not just use them and use an actual threatening organisation that is tied to Green Arrow? Why attempt to develop the Quadrant so late into the season? Are they being featured in the next season? My biggest issue is that no thought was put into them, they're simply the cliched "big organisation" that every criminal either fears or respect. It's cliche and outdone but most of all, it just didn't fit the rest of the season or Ricardo's character.

Moving on to the side story of this episode which honestly was the most pointless thing the writers could've included. Felicity and Curtis working together for the whole Helix project wasn't needed at all and felt so out of pace, for me it didn't ruin the whole episode but there definitely were times when I thought it was so stupid. They could've just filled the rest of the episode with Oliver as Green Arrow or something as simple as developing the relationship between Oliver and William. The inclusion of Felicity and Curtis was not only unnecessary but brought down the quality of this episode which in itself wasn't too great, or at least not as good as last weeks episode. Also, this episode just showed how much this season has screwed up in terms of good character development when Curtis says he'd try not to take satisfaction from the fact that Oliver is all alone when Felicity confided in him about her issue with Oliver "firing her".

Now, while we didn't get many fight scenes in this episode, I found that I was more interested in the fight featuring Green Arrow from the news footage that Felicity watched than any other fight scene in this episode. I don't know but this weeks fight scenes felt weak and a little lazy in terms of not doing something new especially with a character that's not usually been focused on this season. Instead they gave us some gun fights which felt rather rushed and for me that didn't display any of the hand-to-hand skills that Ricardo Diaz is supposed to have. However, in saying that I did really enjoy Ricardo's cruelty when burning Jesse alive on the rooftop as it did raise that intimidation bar just a little bit.

I found it interesting that Black Siren was basically hesitating at the sight of Ricardo torturing Eric Cartier Jr or burning Jesse alive, as well as the fact that she continually questioned Ricardo's plan and his over-confidence. Perhaps the writers are still going with the redemption arc for her character this season and I wouldn't mind seeing that be complete by the end of the season. I do think that next episode will feature Black Siren essentially betraying Ricardo Diaz as episode 20 is titled 'Shifting Allegiances' so perhaps she changes sides and even potentially helps Oliver in that fight that's shown in the promo trailer for next weeks episode between Oliver and Diaz.

Overall, I don't know I'm rather conflicted about this episode. I really wanted to love it as much as I loved last weeks episode but it just didn't do it for me. In terms of Ricardo's story, the episode was really quite good especially as it took a lot of inspiration from the comics. However, other elements like Felicty & Curtis, as well as the Quadrant brought down the quality of the episode. Taking in the factor that the fight scenes just weren't top notch either this episode made it even more disappointing. Overall, I ended up giving the episode a 6.5/10 just because I feel like there was a little too much wrong with it to be a 7 or anything higher. What'd you think though? Did you enjoy the episode and what would you rate this episode out of 10?
