THE FLASH Star Grant Gustin Confirms He's Spoken With James Gunn...But NOT About The Scarlet Speedster

The Flash star Grant Gustin has confirmed he's spoken with DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn after The CW series concluded last year, but not about returning as the Fastest Man Alive. Read on for details...

Believe it or not, it's coming up to a year since The Flash concluded its nine-season run on The CW. The Arrowverse TV shows fell one by one, with the Scarlet Speedster lucky to get a proper ending after Batwoman and Legends of Tomorrow were unceremoniously cancelled.

Grant Gustin did a great job as Barry Allen in the eyes of most fans, and the positive aspects of his performance shone even brighter after whatever it was Ezra Miller did in The Flash movie last summer.

Talking to The Wrap, Gustin admitted he's spoken to DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn...but not about the Fastest Man Alive.

"We've never talked about Flash," the actor confirmed. "We've talked, just like, I'm a huge Superman fan. I've always been a Superman fan, since I was a kid. So, I'm just really excited about the movie. And I'm excited about David [Corenswet]'s casting."

He added, "I'm excited to see what James Gunn does with it. So, I think at one point - maybe a couple of different times, we've DM'd about Superman. We've literally never talked Flash. I'm just excited he's doing Superman."

In other words, they exchanged pleasantries and talked a little bit about the SUPERMAN movie coming to theaters next year. This will disappoint anyone hoping Gustin will get another shot at playing the Scarlet Speedster in the DCU, particularly after he's previously shown a willingness to do so.

"Yeah, if James Gunn asked me to play The Flash, I would do it again," he said earlier this year. "I trust James Gunn."

Gunn later responded to that by saying, "Grant is an incredibly talented guy, performing now on Broadway, I believe, and is absolutely not going to waste just because he's not currently in a DC project. But of course, I'd love to work with him at some point."

Thus far, the filmmaker has only brought back a handful of actors he worked with on DC projects like The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker. The DCEU's leads have largely been recast or forgotten, and we'd assume the same will apply to the Arrowverse's cast as well.

Despite declaring The Flash one of "the greatest superhero movies ever made," Gunn has yet to comment on plans for Barry (or any hero to have held the mantle) in the DCU. We're guessing DC Studios would like some breathing room between the 2022 movie and whatever comes next.

SUPERMAN tells the story of Superman's journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.

The movie is currently set to be released in theaters on July 11, 2025.

Bulk him up, bring him back. He can become the connective tissue from what is, what was, and what will be...

Makes sense since he’s never hidden the fact that he’s a genuine Superman fan.

Regardless of what people thought about the show itself , Grant was pretty much a consistent highlight of The Flash and did well with the material he was given…

However , I still would like someone else to be given a shot at playing a new iteration of the character honestly though i wouldn’t mind if we see him again in a different role.

Trying to become a "Friend of Gunn" (FOG)! Pretty good career move...at least until Warner Brothers is sold.

Keep forgetting Gunn actually said The Flash "one of the greatest superhero movies ever made". I get that it was technically his company at the time but instead of lying to fans, just say nothing.

I wouldn't mind seeing actors from the Arrowverse (or DCEU) return in different roles. Multiverse is common knowledge in CBMs now, so shouldn't be confusing at all anymore.

@bkmeijer1 - Unsure it ever was TBH if talking was a character in a TV show then got a role in a film at least, double dipping has been fairly common (heck seen some IMDB listings where an actor has been several comic characters over the course of ther career).

NOW, if they were playing two or more DC characters at the same time between film and TV (where they aren't unrecogniseable due to MOCAP or prosthetics) that is another matter but...

@Apophis71 - yeah, it has happened a lot before. Now with the multiverse though, it's probably seen in a different light. But still, recasts and actors playing multiple roles happen all the time indeed.

If I were Gustin I'd still be a bit salty that my show went out of it's way to feature a connection to the movies but when the movie came up and all they had to do was just reuse the exact same scene they didn't.

Keep this cheesy TV actor away from the movies please.

@DocSpock - Rest assured, he's too busy leading a Broadway play every week and likely on his way to earn a best actor for Tony Awards and must be too deafened by the applauses he gets by the audience every night, "cheesy" lmao.

Well that's cool. And the best thing that could happen to him now is to be invited to next year's red carpet premiere to meet David and fanboy about the new cinematic Superman. Considering Muschietti didn't even called him (nor JWS) for a cameo nor WBD even bothered to invite him (and again JWS) to the Flash movie premiere after they've been carrying the mantle in live-action and keeping their character relevant beyond the pages of the comics, that's the least DC Studios could do for him.

Seems fair to me.

And maybe Gunn will ask him to teach his future new Flash actor those fake running poses Grant learned to do over the years to make it look more believable. They could fund it as the "Grant Gustin Running School". :P
