YOUNG JUSTICE: OUTSIDERS Co-Creator Says The DC Universe Streaming Service Allows Them To Tell A Darker Story

Among the many shows that will be available on the DC Universe streaming service is the third season of Young Justice, which will see the fan-favorite series return after being cancelled by Cartoon Network back in 2013.

But while most fans are just happy to see the animated property back, some do wonder how the show will be affected by its transition from the cable network to the new streaming platform. Thankfully, the co-creator of Young Justice: Outsiders, Greg Weisman, has answered this question and reveals whether the DC Universe put any creative constraints on the project.

“Because we’re on a streaming service and we’re not on Cartoon Network, we don’t have Cartoon Network’s standards and practices. Departments can’t tell us what we can and can’t do. That has freed us up, and this season is more mature. It’s a little darker. Definitely delves deep into our characters and it also allows us to delve deeper into the DC universe.”

In short, it sounds like they were given a lot of creative freedom, allowing them to tell a darker and more mature story for Season 3. How this will manifest in the final product remains to be seen, but it is intriguing considering the first two seasons already touched on some fairly heavy subject matter.

What do you make of these comments? Are you excited for a darker outing from the series? Make sure to share your thoughts in the comments below.

If I hear one more studio head, show runner, or movie producer talk about how excited they are to go "darker" I swear I'm gonna slap somebody.

@LongMayHeReign - I don't know who's in charge of these projects, but I get the feeling he/she was forced to live in a cold room with no windows as a child.

Because not everything has to be "light-hearted" or "fun" either. That mentality practically ruined Arrow Season 4, the DCEU, ETC. If it makes sense for the progression of the show, then there's absolutely nothing wrong with it going darker.

@Darkknight2149 - yes, it has to be "fun", even if it's "dark". otherwise you end up with a boring POS nobody likes. The Dark Knight is fun to watch, even when it's a dark movie. The Winter Soldier is on the top 3 of rewatchable MCU movies and is easily the most serious one.

why even watch movies or TV series or media in general if you're not having "fun" doing it?

@LongMayHeReign - Generally I agree, but with animation, I think it's valid. Generally speaking, the only television animation most adults tend to watch are raunchy comedies on Fox and Adult Swim. Action based American animated series like YJ, Clone Wars, and AtLA find viewers outside of their target audience, but I'd say we're a handful of hardcore amongst the sea of younger viewers that make up the bulk of the viewership. The subject matter and quality of the writing for many of these series are akin to that of a great comic or PG-13 film, but you can often feel that their hands are tied. They'll dial back on violence, dance around certain subject matter rather than addressing it directly, state things in a way that's a bit obvious so the younger viewers can follow. That's the nature of making an animated series to be aimed at a young target audience on a major network like Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, or Disney XD. In this context, I don't think it's about gratuitous "darkness" as the overwhelming tone, but the freedom to go to the dark places that naturally suit the best version of the story.

I agree, but these days, when most people use the term "fun", they usually using it as a connotation for the Robert Dawney Jr. "Marvel" humour that so many movies are copying these days. This was a problem that plagued Arrow Season 4, Green Lantern, Suicide Squad, Justice League, Jigsaw, The Mummy, ETC, and is usually an extreme response to "dark and gritty" backlash... Which is why such complaints are rarely productive. Instead of complaining too much about the tone, people should focus more on complaining about bad writing and characters.
