GAME OF THRONES Recap: "The Bells" Tolled For Some Major Characters Last Night - Spoilers Ahead

"All right, then... let it be fear." Last night's penultimate episode of Game of Thrones saw many fans' worst fears realized, and it resulted in the deaths of another seven main/principal players...

The writing has been on the wall since the very first season, but nobody wanted to believe that Daenerys Targaryen would ultimately follow in her father's footsteps and give in to the madness that's plagued her family for generations. Unfortunately, that's exactly what happened last night in the devastating penultimate episode of Game of Thrones.

Dany heard "The Bells" that signified surrender, but was too far gone by then having lost so much in so short a span. With a final, rage-filled glance at The Red Keep, The Dragon Queen embraced her worst instincts and set the city ablaze, incinerating thousands of innocent people in the process.

Like The Battle of Winterfell, the Siege of King's Landing resulted in the deaths of a number of major characters. Below, you'll find a rundown of the heroes and villains that lost their lives, and details on how it transpired.

Qyburn

Okay, so Qyburn couldn't really be described as a major character, but he was a significant player in the game, having provided Cersei with many of the tools she needed to maintain her power - The Mountain included.

It was that undead monstrosity that ultimately proved to be Qyburn's undoing, as The Hand of The Queen had his head crushed against a stone in a Frankenstein-like monster kills creator moment. Good riddance!

Varys

game-of-thrones-8x05-13

Melisandre predicted Vary's death two seasons ago, and once The Spider decided to hitch his wagon to the Jon Snow train, his fate was sealed.

When Tyrion, who still believes in Dany despite his doubts, informs his Queen that his old friend has betrayed her, she wastes no time in ordering Drogon to burn him alive.

Varys has been a fan-favorite since season 1, and even though he's done some pretty heinous stuff himself over the years in service of the realm, it was tough to see him go - especially when he was in the right!

Euron Greyjoy

game-of-thrones-8x05-20

Euron survived the incineration of his fleet, and made his way to shore just in time to see Jaime Lannister en route to Cersei. Greyjoy, probably realizing that all is lost anyway, decides to goad The Kingslayer into a fight, and a fight he gets.

Jaime is not the swordsman he once was, and he's dealing with a formidable opponent. The Iron Islander manages to stab Lannister twice (essentially killing him), but Jaime ultimately gains the upper hand (no pun) and runs his sword right through the demented pirate.

Euron bleeds out on the rocks, content in the knowledge that he was the man that killed Jaime Lannister.

The Hound and The Mountain

game-of-thrones-8x05-17

We lost one of the most popular characters on the show last night, but at least he went out doing the one thing that would make him truly happy: killing his horrible bastard of a brother.

The "Clegane Bowl" is something fans have been looking forward to for a long time, and last night delivered a brutal scrap between Gregor 'The Mountain' Clegane and Sandor 'The Hound' Clegane. Realizing that his big brother was practically unkillable, The Hound decided to sacrifice himself to put an end to him, charging The Mountain through the crumbling stairwell to a fiery doom below.

Sad to see The Hound go, but he did get to share one final moment of genuine tenderness with Arya before the end.

Jaime Lannister

game-of-thrones-8x05-19

Like the Clegane boys, Jaime and Cersei Lannister went out together, but these characters are far too big to share the spotlight.

Last week, The Kingslayer had seemingly decided to settle down at Winterfell with Brienne, but hearing the news of his sister's imminent execution prompted him to return to King's Landing. Many fans assumed he was actually going to kill her himself, but it turns out he really was attempting to save her.

After being captured by Dany's men, The Kingslayer is freed by Tyrion only to wind up in a sword-fight with Euron. Mortally wounded, he finally makes it to Cersei's side, and comforts his sister/lover as both are (seemingly) crushed to death by the falling debris.

Cersei Lannister

game-of-thrones-8x05-2

When Cerei was a child, a witch named Maggy the Frog shared a prophecy that the young Lannister girl would be killed by the "Valonqar" (little brother), and that is what happened... kinda.

While Jamie didn't actually murder his sister, he did inadvertently lead her to her death beneath King's Landing while they were attempting to escape. In her final moments, Cersei shows vulnerability for the first time since the Walk of Shame, and maybe even a bit of regret.

Some fans were disappointed to see the woman that had emerged as the show's big bad killed off in this way, but, really, it was in keeping with Cersei and Jamie's arcs from the beginning. Also, we appear to have a new big bad now!

writing wasnt on the wall. come on. being ruthless isnt the same as being mad. if they treated her like breaking bad did walter white, this would all make sense.
jaime was also mistreated. cersei was useless this entire season.
i dont have problems with what theyre doing, but how. it's been a total disaster the last few eps.

@rebellion - it really makes you wonder if they just didn't want to give it 10 eps for production stand point or if D&D just want to move on ...... that's not a mad queen that's something else..... burning kids while you know she can hear their screams is something else , even Cersei had her selfish reasoning on her cruelty :/

this reconfirms for me for epic series 5 seasons is the end point.... examples Supernatural , Breaking Bad and the Wire .....

@rebellion - She's been telling us she's going to take what is hers with fire and blood since season 1, and has been burning people alive since then also. She did cross a line last night, but that was after losing two of her "children," most of her friends and advisers, and finding out that the man she loved was actually her nephew and had a stronger claim to the throne. These things simply pushed her over the edge and drove her the madness that was always dormant inside her anyway.

@RorMachine - she used those words in the red waste, desperate to be let in the city walls so her people wouldnt starve. she refused to attack astapor so the civilians wouldnt be hurt. i'm all for mad dany story, but they didnt do it right, imo. even the actress played her differently cuz she had no idea whats in store.

@rebellion - I feel like the outcome won't be that different in the books. It's just they rushed through this ending. Could have used more time. But D&D wanted out and fast. Oh well...

@RorMachine - i'm fine with every single detail of that ror , but the point of the children was my problem i.e why they wouldn't show her on the dragon during those actions..... like when she saw those kids on the cross, that was built up to be the only line she wouldn't cross regardless.... even maddening impulsive behavior is understandable with what she's gone thru , but this was straight up " i want everyone to suffer and burn , because my feelings are hurt"

@knocturnalzen10 - No, it was I want everyone to suffer and burn because I've lost my damn mind with grief and the people of King's Landing are my enemy. She dimply didn't differentiate in that moment. If you felt it was rushed I can certainly see where you're coming from, but personally, I knew this was coming for a while. Dany has always been an awesome character, but she's also been an imperialist who was willing to do whatever it took to seize the throne.

the biggest i learned about this ep is that John has to put her down like a mad dog and that's terrible to say ..... because her character has been been written off this whole season.....

Qyburn's death was gnarly.

The Mountain spilled his brains like it was a slushie.
