After a torturous 2-year wait, the season 8 premiere of Game of Thrones was always going to be a major event, and it's now been revealed that a series record 17.4 million viewers tuned in to witness the beginning of the fantasy drama series' final set of storylines. That includes the 11.8 million television viewers who watched at 9 p.m. last night, as well as those who watched two encore presentations and streamed the show with the HBO Go or HBO Now apps.

The previous record for the mega-popular show was set by the season seven finale, which drew in 16.9 million viewers in August of 2017.

Although it had its share of big moments, "Winterfell" was a relatively quiet installment by Game of Thrones standards - but based on the promo for next week's ep, it looks like The Long Night will be on our heroes' doorstep a lot sooner than most of us expected.

Tell us, did you tune in for Game of Thrones last night? If so, what did you think of the final season premiere?

Because of the rise of streaming services and the slow fall of traditional programming, I don't know when we'll ever collectively watch such a huge weekly show ever again. GoT not only survived this transition, but it's killing it.

... am I missing something?

17.4 million viewers last night v 16.9 million viewers for the s07 finale does not equal over a million viewer increase... that's only 500,000 more.

I know I haven't been in school for a long time, but math hasn't changed THAT much, has it?
