HBO Max Developing New DC Comics Adaptations Aimed At Various International Territories

HBO Max might be going the Japanese Spider-Man route, as the streaming platform will look to build its international footprint with DC Comics adaptations produced and aimed at countries outside of the U.S.

HBO MAX subscribers might one day stream a Japanese Batman anime or a live-action Brazilian Supergirl series. as the streaming platform looks to target different international territories outside of North America.

According to Deadline, Casey Bloys, Chief Content Officer HBO and HBO Max, is said to be "exploring what DC-related content it could make outside of the U.S. based on its library of genre titles."

Under such direction, cool concepts like the old, animated Batman of Shanghai short from DC Nation could become a live-action series on HBO Max that's marketed and targeted for the streamer's (potential) audience in China.

This latest, wave-making development comes on the heels of HBO Max revealing yesterday that its full slate of 2021 films would premiere on the streaming platform the same day that they are released in theaters.

HBO Max already has a number of live-action and animated DC properties in various stages of development including (but not limited to) the animated Harley Quinn series, James Gunn's Peacemaker spinoff and new seasons for Doom Patrol, Young Justice and Titans in the pipeline.

This move would also appear to be an indication that HBO Max is following the Netflix formula which has seen the streaming leader find success by creating Netflix Originals for various territories around the world. The U.S. is Netflix's leading streaming platform, followed by Brazil, the U.K., Mexico, France and then Canada.

During a virtual Web Summit conference, Bloys stated, "We’re also going to work to see DC content in other countries outside of the U.S....One of the things that we’re going to do with Max is that all of our international productions will eventually live on Max and we’re going to do a much better job of coordinating between all of the folks programming in Europe, Latin America and Asia so if there’s anything that we’re developing that has real cross-border appeal, we’ll be able to highlight that."

The Head of HBO Max Global Andy Forssell added, "The plan is to be in 190 countries, it’s just how fast can we do that roll-out."

HBO Max is currently only operating in the U.S. but will become available in Europe and Latin America next year.

Does anyone remember Knight and Squire from Batman Inc? I'd like to see them make a return, in some capacity. There's a lot of potential there.

HBO MAX really pulling out all the stops lately...

Not sure if it'll be worth the $15 a month price tag, but it's worth a shot...

@LNBfett12

The HBO content alone was enough for me to subscribe but I found a way to make it cheaper by adding profiles for my brother and one of my boys.

Now we all only pay $5 a month.

Uh yeah, it's worth the price.

@LNBfett12 - they only pull out their stops at DC though, Warner Bros has so much more to offer than just DC.

A Harry Potter universe series about new students in Hogwarts, a new Vampire-Universe series, a Smallville revival, a proper fourth Lethal Weapon season, a Friends reunion film (I know they're doing one, it's just getting postponed all the time), a Lost Boys sequel series, a Conjuring TV Series, a new live-action Scooby Doo show, Blade Runner 3, Mad Max films/shows.

For me they're not pulling enough right stops. Only Zack Snyder/DC related ones.

@Blergh - They're doing a Dune tie-in series, IIRC.

But other than that, I definitely agree. They're going big on DC, but I'd love to see more of that attention across their line-up of IPs. Especially for Scooby-Doo. We haven't gotten quality content from there since Mystery Incorporated.

@SerKurtWagner - It's weird just knowing what WB owns and what they could make big sellers with. They wouldn't even have to buy in much talent for either project.
The Vampire Diaries Universe is still a huge draw for audiences of all ages, just get in more of that. It's easy and cheap.

IMO they're banking too hard on DC, something great for me as a DC fan but also sucks as a fan of their other stuff.

I'm down for an anime of the Super Young Team, which is a superhero team, in the DC universe, that is in Japan.

About damn time WB used HBO for DC TV shows. Can't wait to see what they come up with.

@E4Nigma - feels like we’ve been screaming for HBO to produce comic book shows for so long. Watchmen was a good test

Watchmen proved that HBO is the place for DC TV. What a masterpiece.

How about a decent Superman, Flash, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, or Aquaman animated series? Just please no more Batman.

We already have a Japanese Batman anime called Batman: Ninja and we are getting a live action Brazilian Wonder Girl series based on Yara Flor.

There are a lot of creative mandates coming down from the top lately.
It's the age of DC characters being AT&T's little sluts.
I just hope we get something good from all this.

It can happen. Look at Batman Beyond. The studio was like "We need a new hip young Batman!" and Bruce Timm was like "How dare you even suggest... well, now that you mention it... if we set it in the future... " And majicks abound.

@Reeds2Much - How the hell did you discover this? This just goes to show how shitty a lot of films and shows are from my country, this looks really dated and it's just from the 90s.
