Yesterday, ABC announced that Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will return to our screens for its seventh and final season on Wednesday, May 27, and now EW has revealed that the team's time-travel adventures will bring them into contact with a character from the now defunct Agent Carter.

There's no mention of Hayley Atwell reprising the role of Peggy Carter, but her costar Enver Gjokaj will return as Daniel Sousa.

"It wasn't anywhere near my brain," says Gjokaj, who was surprised when the opportunity to return to his Agent Carter role arose. "I would've been thrilled at any moment for it to come back, but I think as an actor you don't have time. You just have to move on to the next project."

There was speculation that AOS Season 7 might feature some kind of Agent Carter nod or reference when the crew jumped back to 1931 New York in the Season 6 finale, but an actual cameo appearance from one of the cancelled show's characters seemed like a long-shot.

When we last saw Sousa he was running the SSR's Los Angeles bureau and had grown very close to Peggy, but on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. we're going to "see him in a different light" according to co-showrunner Jeff Bell. "[Sousa] had a particular role on [Agent Carter], and so we were able to show another color of him that you hadn't necessarily seen on the show."

Check out a new official image of Sousa below, and let us know if you're looking forward to the return of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in the usual place.

Awesome! The more characters from Agent Carter, the better. Also, I think it goes without saying what crossing over with Agent Carter means... just another notch in the belt for this MCU show (and no, I'm not talking about Carter).

Good news, but I'm confused. I thought they were trying to distance themselves from any MCU connection.

@inkniron - the final season is different, but they were trying to not so much distance themselves from crossing over with the movies so much as moving away from that to give themselves the ability to dabble in some other stuff.

@HeavyMetal4Life - kind of how I felt, even though people on here we're insistent it was no longer part of the MCU. I mean they did reference it in every season but 6 and even had Fury and others appear.

@inkniron - yeah, the show kept referencing stuff through the season 5 finale. But its after Civil War where they started to move away from the references so that they could do their own thing. I think one of the producers/showrunners said they felt constricted by the idea of having to crossover or reference and they wanted to branch out, which you could see them really starting to do in seasons 4 and 5. Season 6 had no references that I can remember. People on here say a lot of things...

@HeavyMetal4Life - can't say I blame them though. The comics are so rich with things they'll probably never use in the movies. It's good to keep things fresh. Just like the Netflix shows. They reference the attack on NY but we're never constrained by it, which was the right choice.

@inkniron - exactly, I really like how they handled the references/crossovers in seasons 4 and 5. They were able to focus on their own stories and do what was best for the show while still reaffirming every so often the show's place in the MCU.

Cool. But everyone knows you gotta get Peggy.

Still annoyed by the Agent Carter cliffhanger ending. Really wanted to see where it headed.
