Netflix Renews Marvel's JESSICA JONES For Season 2; Small Update On THE DEFENDERS

Jessica Jones is coming back! Nearly three months after its initial debut, Marvel & Netflix have confirmed that the critically acclaimed series is returning for a second season. Plus, we have a small update on how The Defenders may affect season 2. Come check it out!

Well, it's finally official.

At the Television Critics Association's press tour today, Netflix confirmed that Marvel's critically acclaimed series Jessica Jones will return for a 13-episode season 2 at an yet-to-be determined date, which may mean we don't see the series return this year. First season showrunner Melissa Rosenberg will be back leading the show for its sophomore season.

When asked about the rumored Punisher series, Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos played it relatively coy saying that "We're still on the five we originally announced." Those five he's referring to are of course Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and a mini-series based on the The Defenders

Speaking of The Defenders, it seems as though the mini-series' production schedule will determine when we see the second season of Jessica Jones, a potential third season of Daredevil, and/or any subsequent seasons of any upcoming Marvel Netflix series like Luke Cage and Iron Fist. Considering Marvel & Netflix are still on the hunt for their Iron Fist, it's interesting that they're already factoring in production on The Defenders ahead of production on a likely 13-episode Iron Fist series. Could we see Iron Fist make his debut in The Defenders ahead of his own solo series? Probably not, but only time will tell.

Before signing off, Sarandos elaborated a bit further on the possibility of seeing shows based on The Punisher, Elektra, and/or any other prominent supporting character that shows up in one of the core four series: "All the characters that spin out in that universe could spin out, Any character that's in there is on the table, but nothing to talk about." Could this mean we see more than two Marvel Netflix shows in a calendar year? Maybe, but it's much easier said than done and according to Sarandos, it is certainly not their current intent: "It's possible, right now, these are produced at the scale of a major film, so they're long production times and long post times. In some cases we have character crossover, which makes it more difficult to manage production in a way to jam two or three in. It's not the goal, certainly, to put more than one or two out a year." It's probably safe to assume that most fans would agree that if producing more than two shows a year affects quality, it's in everyone's best interest to stick to their current production schedule, which has been working just fine.

So, what do you guys think? Sound off with your thoughts below!

Good! she would be the only Defender that doesn't care about saving people. I mean, they ended the season with her deleting messages from people in need of her, essentially showing her as a cold human being. If she does "grow" into a hero, I'd prefer it be done in her own series before Defenders hits, otherwise the concept of Defenders doesn't work considering she doesn't want to....you know, defend.

Hmm. There's a lot they need to iron out for Season 2.

Get rid of the annoying side characters. Trish was great and Jeryn was a great progressive character.

They need to focus on Jessica being a PI. First season was dominated by Luke Cage and Kilgrave. I want them to have Jessica be a PI. She can investigate matters and draw in various side characters from the Marvel universe.

Having a major villain isn't always neccesary. I think having Jessica tackle the Maggia could be an interesting plot.

I guess there's too many questions. Unlike Daredevil, The Punisher, and other characters I'm not too sure where they can take Jessica in a follow up season.

Hopefully Jessica Jones will spend season 2 actually being a private investigator.

I'm cool with it. I enjoyed season 1 even though it dragged in spots.

I thought Season 1 was all around a better show than Daredevil S1 so I'm excited for this. I wonder if this'll come in before or after Defenders though.

@DrDoom
It's still pretty cold to delete a message and disregard someone when they're saying their boyfriend is about to murder them. She's overwhelmed and whatnot, but her deleting those messages shows she has no intention of putting herself out there.

My point is, I just don't see that careless personality being around when Defenders hits, because the concept of Defenders implies she wants to be there, because it is a team constructed by all members.

So if the last thing we saw before she's being all goody goody, is avoiding people then it would seem out of character is my point. They sort of need to prep her character for Defenders, more character development is all.

Really enjoyed JJ. Good to hear a second season is up.
Kilgrave and Jessica's interactions were always good and interesting and this show made me a bit more excited to see Luke Cages own series, which is a nice bonus.

Season 1 was okay, but it had nothing on Daredevil S1 good. Too many annoying side-characters nobody cared about.

Hopefully this can mean a better season, was really underwhelmed by season one, even more so now that I've read the whole Alias series.

@ScarletWarlock I get what you're saying and it makes sense about Jessica not having the intentions of being a hero. Hopefully they don't ignore that about her character, but perhaps she crosses over into Luke Cages story and something changes her mind/attitude in what transpires there? We'll just have to wait and see.
Or if JJ season 2 hits before Defenders, I'm sure it will be addressed.

If I had to guess:

2016: Daredevil Season 2 and Luke Cage Season 1
2017: Jessica Jones Season 2 and Iron Fist Season 1
2018: Defenders and Daredevil Season 1 (at this point, they'll probably have 3 Marvel series per year)

After S1 being one of my most anticipated things ever in the history of Marvel/DC adaptations I can only acknowledge this news with a bit of indifference. S1 was okay, but nowhere near what I'd hoped it could be. Maybe S2 will be more to my liking (they already lost Kilgrave though).

November to January is not 3 months, it hasn't even been a full 2 months yet.

@mdwilliamson24
A season 2 inspiring her to be a hero would also imply Jessica and Trish go full 'Jewel' and 'Hellcat' so that would be exciting to have that established before Defenders. I don't mind this slow approach that they seem to be doing but I would prefer Defenders pull no punches and embrace itself as a superhero team up, so I do think it should have 'Jewel' even if she doesn't suit up in that series.
