In today's episode of Loki, Sylvie finally achieved her almost-lifelong goal when she killed the mastermind behind the Time Variance Authority. He was revealed as a Kang the Conqueror Variant dubbed "He Who Remains," but his demise means that the Multiverse is once again free, and the Kangs who want to rule over everything are on their way!

Things are about to get seriously crazy in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but where does that leave Loki and Sylvie? In an interview with Marvel.com, actress Sophia Di Martino explained that getting revenge was ultimately more important in that moment than the feelings Sylvie has for Loki.

"She still has to see her plan through to the end," the actress explains. "The kiss, for me, was like a final sort of thank you and goodbye. It's been fun, dude, but at the end of the day, I'm not you and I've got a mission, and I'm going to see this through, on my own, to the end. So see ya."

However, Di Martino acknowledged that dealing the killing blow doesn't have quite the impact Sylvie believed. "When she kills him, she's just completely unfulfilled. It didn't do what she wanted to do. She doesn't feel that relief. That final moment is just utter devastation. She thought she was going to get the relief that she's been waiting for her whole life. She's built this up so much."

"She finally kills the guy right at the top, and feels nothing. Still feels sort of angry and bitter and sad, as she always has. But nothing, just emptiness and that's really sad."

The last time we see Sylvie, she's in the Citadel at the End of Time on her own after inadvertently sending Loki to another universe. So, what comes next for the character? "What she does with [that sadness] is yet to be seen. It’s an interesting place to start another chapter," Di Martino teases.

Clearly, her story is not over, but we'll likely be waiting until season two of Loki for it to continue!

So is she officially the MCU’s Enchantress? It feels like they’ve done everything but give her the title.

@santoanderson - very much so. A blonde woman named after one of the Enchantress characters, who’s main ability is manipulating minds which she has said multiple times is enchantment and her gauntlets have the Enchantress’ iconic circle pattern on them.

I can see them making her fully commit to and embracing the Enchantress persona next season to make her firmly say “I’m not Loki” with more than just her name being changed

It was hella sad to see them fight, because you could tell Loki had that same frustration classic Loki did after the brawl. That feeling that they are trapped in their ways one way or another. What I'm curious to see change with her character is, now that she occupy's Immortus castle, but in this new timeline Kang is running the TVA, is she working for Kang? Or is she occupying a space beyond the timeline?

@OmegaDaGrodd - I think she's in a space beyond the timeline and the timeline Loki ended up in is already a variant Kang timeline where he decided not to become the He Who Remains, but publicly lead the TVA.

@bkmeijer - And that's what's a bit confusing to me, because I felt like the TVA existed outside of any actual "timeline" so it makes it hard to peg who is where/when in respects to anyone else

@OmegaDaGrodd - didn't even think of that.

I assumed the TVA was linked to the timeline He Who Remains is originally from, so now that he doesn't control branches anymore I guess he couldn't stop an earlier version of himself to decide to do things differently with the TVA.

Season 2 better offer some answers (soon).

I think we will see the Loki’s return for season two.

I think it would be interesting if Loki went to find the season 1 versions of Mobius, B-15 and have the Variants who were freed from the sham of the TVA join the fight to bring down this new timeline he is trapped in now.

I love how the basic story of the Loki series is “Go [frick] Yourself”.

Now that I think about it, why didn't she just enchant He Who Remains to see if he's correct about what he said?

@bkmeijer - I don’t think she ever wanted to see if he was. She never cared. She wanted to kill him regardless.

Loki’s explanation was valid and understandable. The possible risk that comes with killing He Who Remains was too great. But at that point, she was blinded by vengeance.

@bkmeijer - Because she doesn't act rationally. Feelings washed over her.

@BlackBeltJones @Repian - couldn't Loki have suggested it though when he stopped her at the last second?

But yeah, even then she probably wouldn't have listened

@bkmeijer - I agree with you on Loki suggesting but yea she wouldn’t have listened.

I can see the scene playing out with him begging her to enchant Proto Kang and her just blindly staring back at him, with rage in her eyes. And Loki finally and sadly giving up on trying to convince her.

I also think he wanted it to be HIM that convinced her. He wanted her to be able to BELIEVE HIM. A Loki to be able to reach a Loki. He wanted her to trust him. Trust is the trickiest thing for Loki’s.

@bkmeijer - they probably would have just said something like "oh his mind is too strong I can't enchant him" or something like that, kinda like when she tried it on loki in an earlier episode. They should have shown that imo, but still it's kinda easy to imagine it going that way.

@Repian -

One thing I think they really hit home on with this show was that 2012 Loki experiencing the things he specifically did (seeing his whole future, his time in the timeloop, friendship with Mobius) has allowed him to break a lot of his cycle in ways none of the other Lokis were able to, aside from Classic Loki to a degree, and that was largely because he'd been alive long enough to realize the issues that are inherent within Lokis

The big point with Sylvie was that at the end of the day, despite how different she was on a scale of grandeur, she still had the same self destructive issues that Lokis tend to have

bkmeijer2 - 7/14/2021, 7:36 AM
@BlackBeltJones @roboticJohnson - I guess it's a small nitpick, but I do feel the flow of the episode wouldn't have been disrupted if they included something like that.

@OmegaDaGrodd - thats probably why he looked so unsurprised with the whole backstabbing and infighting in episode 5 between all Loki's

I loved when "Kang" shouted at Sylvie to grow up. I knew then she was going to kill him. How could she grow up? He took her life away from her and she's constantly been on the run for years. She isn't mature enough to let go of her vengeance and it was his fault. Brilliant writing.
