Breaking news out of Marvel Studios to kickstart the week, as it's being reported that Golden Globe-winner Oscar Isaac (Dune; X-Men: Apocalypse; Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker) has signed on for the lead role in Marvel's upcoming Disney+ series, Moon Knight.
He will portray the one-and-only Marc Spector, an elite soldier and mercenary who decides to fight crime after he becomes the human avatar of Khonshu, the Egyptian god of the moon.
Jeremy Slater (The Umbrella Academy; The Exorcist) has been tapped as showrunner, and with a star in place, Marvel Studios is now shifting their attention to finding a director for the series. A production start date has yet to-be-determined, but it seems quite possible that cameras could roll before the end of next year if everything falls into place.
Isaac is the latest in a growing line of major castings for Marvel Studios this fall, joining Primetime Emmy-winner Tatitana Maslany (Orphan Black; Perry Mason) as She-Hulk and newcomer Iman Vellani as Ms. Marvel. The casting of Kate Bishop for Hawkeye is presumably still underway, with Academy Award-nominee Hailee Steinfeld (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse; Dickinson) long rumored to be favorite.
However, unlike Maslany and Vellani, this isn't Isaac's first venture into the world of Marvel Comics, having previously played the titular villain in 2016's X-Men: Apocalypse - although it seems likely his trip into the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be much better received. He also voiced Spider-Man 2099 in the post-credits scene for the Academy Award-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, a role he's expected to reprise in the 2022 sequel.
