WHAT IF...? Season 2 Will Feature Characters And Movies From Post-AVENGERS: ENDGAME MCU

It's clear that the first nine episodes of What If...? are focusing on the first few Phases of MCU movies, but Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has now confirmed that season two will move beyond them.

We've heard that Marvel Studios wanted the first season of What If...? to focus on the earlier MCU movies, and it looks like these initial episodes are going to primarily retell stories from the first two Phases (hence why we're seeing characters and stories from the likes of Captain America: The First Avenger, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Avengers: Age of Ultron revisited).

Work has already begun on the animated series' second batch of episodes, and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has now confirmed that they will move beyond the MCU's early days.

Asked by Screen Rant how future episodes will delve into the exploration of the Multiverse, Feige responded: "That's the fun thing about having the What If...? series now; we can explore questions just like that... And I will say, just as season 1 is tapping into films and storylines from the MCU that you've seen up to this point, season 2 will definitely incorporate movies from Phase 4."

It's fascinating to think what sort of stories What If...? could tell if it were to ask questions about movies like Black Widow, Shang-Chi and the Legends of the Ten Rings, and Eternals, but time will tell on that front. As of right now, we don't actually know when season two will debut on Disney+.

What stories do you hope to see explored in What If...? moving forward?

of "What If...T'Challa Became a Star-Lord?"

6. One Moment Changes Everything

984913331w31w23122313

We find a young T'Challa in Wakanda wishing his father, T'Chaka, would take down the barrier around their home so they can explore with the wider world. He refuses, so it's no wonder the youngster takes the opportunity to run through that and retrieve his spear.

It's then he's kidnapped by the Ravagers Taserface and Kraglin, but where's Yondu?

In this reality, he sent his underlings to retrieve Ego's kid, and the shield surrounding Wakanda drew those two to the city. As a result, they just assumed it was T'Challa who Ego wanted and this one decision changed, well, everything in this version of the MCU.

As a result, Peter Quill was left on Earth, and Yondu had a new adoptive son he could take on adventures throughout the Galaxy (something T'Challa jumps at the opportunity to explore).

5. A Whole New Star-Lord

984913331w31w23122313332

When we met Peter Quill in Guardians of the Galaxy, nobody really knew who he was and "Star-Lord" felt like more of an ironic title than anything else.

Peter is definitely a good guy, but up until arriving on Morag, he'd seemingly been just another Ravager. T'Challa, on the other hand, has put Yondu's crew on a new path that's seen them become the Robin Hoods of the spaceways, robbing from the rich to give to the poor. He also has a major fan in Kraglin!

This world's Star-Lord has achieved a lot, including being able to turn Thanos to the side of the angels. In just a conversation, he managed to convince the Mad Titan to abandon his plans to commit genocide and recruited him to the Ravagers. That's one heck of an achievement and shows just how much T'Challa's newfound role has changed history.

Of course, Thanos' new outlook is good news for more than just The Avengers...

4. Good News For Drax And Nebula

984913331w31w2312231333233

With Thanos convinced to abandon his mission, Drax's family are never killed as the bartender we meet here talks about his wife and daughter with T'Challa. Korath mentions working for Ronan, but without the Mad Titan backing him, chances are he's not making a point of slaughtering innocents.

As for Nebula, while it looks like Thanos may have started enhancing her, she remains mostly unscathed and is far more humanoid in appearance than her MCU counterpart.

To begin with, she clearly holds a lot of resentment towards her father, but by the time the episode ends, she's managed to forgive him and even saves his life. Something tells us that would have never happened with the Nebula we know, and this femme fatale version is a lot more stable.

As for Rocket, Groot, and Gamora, we don't know what's become of them, but can't help but feel we'll see the latter soon!

3. The Collector's Rise To Power

984913331w31w2312231333

With no Mad Titan to instil fear in the Galaxy at large, The Collector filled the void by enhancing himself and becoming a crime lord in the process.

The likes of Howard the Duck and Cosmo remain part of his collection, but so does Hela's Necrosword, Captain America's shield, Mjolnir, and, perhaps most tragically, Korg's fist. Yes, this Collector killed the "chatty Kronan," though we're a little more intrigued about what he did to Cap and Thor.

Powerful enough to defeat even Hela, this Collector isn't someone to be trifled with, though he ultimately gets what he deserves when T'Challa frees his "collection" and he's overwhelmed by them.

This shows just how much potential the character had, and we wish these ideas had made it into live-action!

2. Return To Wakanda

984913331w31w2312231333233

After learning the truth about Wakanda (it wasn't destroyed as Yondu claimed), T'Challa returns home with his Ravager family. Reunited with his father, mother, and sister, he seems happy to be back on Earth, and it's interesting to think about what he could do for his home planet given the positive impact he had on the Galaxy at large.

The Ravagers also seem to fit right in, with Thanos and Nebula getting to know Okoye and Kraglin happily chatting away with Shuri.

This episode reveals that T'Chaka sent his people into outer space to try and find his son, so it's feasible an alliance between the Wakandans and Ravagers could be huge for this version of the MCU.

Unfortunately, this world's days might be numbered...

1. Ego

984913331w31w231223133

Peter Quill was never abducted from Earth, meaning he led an ordinary life after his mother passed away.

Working in a Dairy Queen and listening to some of his favourite music, things all seem well for Peter until a customer disturbs his dancing. It's Ego, his Celestial father who we know has a history of tracking down his offspring in an effort to find one capable of wielding their cosmic abilities and conquering the universe alongside him.

With no Guardians of the Galaxy to stop him, Ego is now free to manipulate Peter into doing his bidding and as The Watcher warns, that could spell doom for this reality.

We have a feeling Marvel Studios plans to revisit this, but whether that will be in season two or the next nine episodes obviously remains to be seen for now!

I would also hope they increase the animation production value, because it's so far my least favorite thing about the show. Looks like a PS3 game.

@Fares - Well keep in mind that we're only two episodes in, and I thought that Ep. 2 was a step up from Ep. 1 as far as the animation goes. Personally I think that the animation looks really nice, especially with the shading and such. The only thing that bugs me a bit (and this is a minor complaint) is the mouths not syncing with the words sometimes. But that's about the only that bugs me about the animation. I especially like the backgrounds and effects, like explosions and such. To me that looks like movie-quality animation. But to each their own.

@StSteven - Aside from the lip synching, I feel that all the textures are too flat, there is no depth to the models. Also the characters move as one block. There is no nuance in how the clothes interact with the body for example. And the lighting isn't all that great. It seems that when in doubt, they throw a rim light on the characters.
I'm glad you liked it, and I do hope it gets better with the episodes. Although I didn't notice that much improvement from Ep. 1 to Ep. 2.
All I wish it wouldn't distract me enough to enjoy the content.
If the choice was mine, I would've gone with 2D animation. Like Netflix's anime production.

@Fares - I did notice the shading a lot more in Ep. 2 (especially with Thanos's face) so I think that that helps with the depth. Once I noticed it with Thanos I started noticing it in a lot of other places as well, which I didn't notice in Ep. 1. For me the only thing that bugs me is the lip syncing, which I thought was a lot better in Ep. 2 than Ep. 1. Overall I really like the animation but maybe I just have low expectations after years of crappy Marvel animation (for the most part). I don't really watch the DC animated movies so I don't have much to compare it to.

@StSteven - Yeah I can understand that. I was evaluating it more as an eventful Dinsey+ production. So I wanted it to be at least as good as the Bad Batch in terms of animation.

I think it would be interesting to see one or two episodes of "What If..." where the villains in certain movies actually won. Like what if Obidiah Stane beat Tony in Iron Man or what if Darren Cross had beaten Scott in Ant-man. I wouldn't want a whole season of it as it would get kinda repetitive but in some cases I think it would be interesting.

I would like to see a "What If Natasha and her family remained as undercover Russian spies"

Just continue that undercover spy family dynamic up to the modern day, have them spying on all the key events of the MCU for Russia.

Wasn’t the original plan to have an episode correlate with each movie? Is that no longer whats happening?

What If The Eternals actually helped The Avengers against Thanos?

What If The Eternals were actually comic book accurate?

Would have loved it if Steve had actually ‘died ‘ in captain Carter so we could have him reappear as Hydra Cap in place of the Winter solider

So apparently the Spider-Man trailer leaked today. I'm gonna avoid it till the official release tomorrow.

Idk why people need to ruin the fun by leaking it, but also, can't complain about leaks .. leaks gave us Deadpool.
