WHAT IF...? Spoilers - Does The Premiere Episode Tease DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS?

The premiere of What If...? puts the spotlight on Captain Carter, but does Marvel Studios set the stage for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness? We have a feeling it does if you look close enough!

The first episode of What If...? definitely feels standalone in nature, but it's hard to believe Marvel Studios isn't using this animated series to set the stage for at least some future stories. The most obvious is Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, especially as that movie will explore alternate realities just like the ones we're going to see in What If...? each week.

So, did today's premiere set the stage for that highly anticipated sequel? The answer is...maybe?

Near the end of the episode, the Red Skull uses the Tesseract to welcome Hydra's "champion" to his world, only to be promptly crushed. We never really get to see the massive creature's full form, but it's basically a huge, green squid-like creature that looks an awful lot like it could be Shuma Gorath.

Rumour has it that this villain - who reportedly wants to use America Chavez to travel from world to world and conquer the Multiverse - will be the Doctor Strange sequel's big bad. With that in mind, it makes perfect sense for this episode of What If...? to have teased his MCU debut, especially if this clash with Captain Carter is what leads to him eventually crossing paths with the Sorcerer Supreme.

We've also heard that Peggy will eventually work with The Watcher in this show, while there's a lot of speculation online that we'll see her suit up in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. If that's the case, then it's possible Captain Carter is enlisted to help put Shuma Gorath down once and for all.

It's hard to say for sure, but something tells us this creature wasn't just a random space squid...

The action was amazing.. animation too.. but it should have been an one hour episode. It was way too fast paced and really similar to CA: TFA. It didn't even feel like it's own thing, it felt like a quick recap of a good movie that we will never see. I wish it gave us more Peggy-Steve moments that weren't just a character swapped version of the movie scenes. Steve's goodbye to Peggy at end of CA:TFA was probably the most emotional moment of the MCU. They ruined it here. They turned a 3min emotional scene into a 15sec of normal conversation. Peggy Carter was great though.

@KanchaCheena - Yea I was surprised at how little they nailed the final goodbye. One of the best parts of TFA's ending is how Steve gets cut off mid sentence. Here it just seemed really rushed like a lot else in this episode

I know it’s 2021 and this show has nothing to do with the TV show, but Peggy Carter was plenty tough in a skirt. I know it would not fit the narrative, and I didn’t want her to be feminine, well, they succeeded.

They should have dropped at least 2 episodes today. The episode was perfect don’t get me wrong but the fanboy in me wanted 10 more minutes

It was an entertaining What If? I shouldn't really expect the show to be anything else more.
But the animation was a bit wonky at times, took some getting used to. Still wish they had went with 2D animation if they had any limitations.

At least What If…isn’t ‘seemingly confirming’ shuma gorath and it’s just a tease, I’m happy.

Another gigantic one-eyed aquatic monster as the movie's big bad? This trend is going to become the next sky beam.

I ended up loving the animation. Some of the background remind me of the environments in Supergiant Games' games.

SPOILER

Anybody else think Steve was going to get taken to become the winter soldier when the train blew up? I thought maybe as an end credits scene, then he shows up in Castle Red Skull

I don't believe that was Shuma. When she arrived in the present, the tentacled monster was all sliced n diced up
