STRANGER THINGS Season 4 Officially Announced: "We're Not In Hawkins Anymore"

Stranger Things Season 4 has officially been announced by Netflix with an intriguing new teaser suggesting a departure from the town of Hawkins, Indiana, where the previous three seasons have been set.

Stranger Things is easily one of Netflix's most popular original series, so it's no surprise that the streaming gant has re-upped it for a fourth season. While it was widely expected, the official announcement came today alongside the first teaser for new season, which will seemingly take the story outside of Hawkins, Indiana.

"We're not in Hawkins anymore," the teaser for Season 4 hints. This makes sense given the ending of Season 3, which saw Joyce, Jonathan, Will, and Eleven leave Hawkins. Exactly where Season 4 will take us remains to be seen, but we'll almost certainly return, at some point, to the Upside Down.

The Upside Down is actually the focus of the teaser, and for good reason too. Many fans believe Hopper stepped into the gate before the giant explosion and is now trapped in the alternate dimension. A post-credits teaser at the end of the season also hinted that he may be alive, but being kept prisoner in the Soviet Union. One thing is almost certain though, he's probably not dead - especially if you heard the secret phone message from Murray Bauman.

The Duffer Brothers previously explored life outside of Hawkins when Eleven went on a bit of a road trip to Chicago in Season 2. While that episode wasn't met with the greatest reception, the show's creators seem keen on opening up the series.

“I think the biggest thing that’s going to happen is it’s going to open up a little bit, not necessarily in terms of scale, in terms of special effects, but open up in terms of allowing plotlines into areas outside of Hawkins,” Matt Duffer told EW in July shortly after Season 3's debut.

The official Season 4 announcement also coincides with a new multi-year TV/film deal between Netflix and the Duffer Brothers.

“We are absolutely thrilled to continue our relationship with Netflix. Ted Sarandos, Cindy Holland, Brian Wright, and Matt Thunell took a huge chance on us and our show — and forever changed our lives,” The Duffer Brothers said. “From our first pitch meeting to the release of Stranger Things 3, the entire team at Netflix has been nothing short of sensational, providing us with the kind of support, guidance, and creative freedom we always dreamed about. We can’t wait to tell many more stories together — beginning, of course, with a return trip to Hawkins!”

Stranger Things Season 4 does not yet have a premiere date.

The Chicago subplot was the worst part of the series.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - Felt like a bad 90's X-Men knock-off network series pilot

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - thank god we never revisited that subplot, that was the worst episode of the entire series so far.

@BlackBeltJones - Season 3 was my favourite season of the lot, it was fun, had great moments, all of it just worked. Season 2 sucked. Season 1 was the best from an objective standpoint.

Cool, not surprised, we knew this would get a renewal.

However, I hope that the season 4 is a return to form for the show, more like the first two seasons and less like season 3. Not that season 3 was bad, it was good, but it was a step down from the earlier seasons. A bit too slick and polished and it largely lacked that tense/horror element that the first two seasons had, focusing more on action. There were a few scenes that had me on the edge of the seat not knowing what would happen to the characters, with the best being the pool fight between Billy and the gang (and the hospital fight was great too), but for the most part the characters didn't feel like they were in any real danger (i.e. I knew they were going to make it out of the scene and into the next); the mall fight against the giant monster is a good example of this.

And I also hope that they do a better job explaining stuff this upcoming season, because there was way too many plot points that just went unanswered. And do a better job fleshing characters out: they really should have spent more time developing Billy's childhood this past season, as Billy was one of the best characters from the season. Instead, we wasted time with unnecessary relationship break-up/will they or won't they drama with Eleven/Mike and Hopper/Joyce.

And please, less Max, she was pretty terrible in almost every scene this past season. And her suddenly feeling for Billy was a bit unrealistic considering there was almost no development of their relationship throughout the season.

ST season ranking:
1. S2
2. S1
3. S3

I binged it a few months back to see what all the fuss was about. It wasn't all that great of a show to be honest. Felt like I was watching the same shit each season (because I was). Character development was more entertaining than the actual story line for me.

I haven't watched this show since season 1.
I couldn't get past the first episode of season 2, and didn't feel the need to try again.

Still sad they killed of the Red Ranger, but I'm really excited to see were they go next and I really want the cast to face the real Mind Flayer.

Matthew Modine just teased his return to the show, good. Was a bit surprised that Season 3 didn't feature him, wonder if he is the American that is in the Russian prison.
