Netflix cancelled Warrior Nun back in December, just a month after its second season premiere, and fans immediately began to show their support for the series by campaigning for it to be given another shot.
An online petition to revive the show gained over 120,000 signatures, and the hashtag #SaveWarriorNun was tweeted more than five million times.
Back in June, series creator Simon Barry announced that the fan campaign had paid off, and Ava Silva and friends would return for more adventures - but not on Netflix. We assumed another network or streamer had picked up the show, but we now have an even more exciting update.
Executive producer Dean English shared the following video announcement earlier today (via SFFGazette.com).
“I need to start by thanking all of you loyal fans. It’s because of you and your incredible energy that we keep pushing forward to make these stories. You guys really make it all worthwhile. So thank you so much for your continued support.”
“I am very happy to announce that Warrior Nun is coming back as a trilogy of motion pictures. Once again, a trilogy of feature films. Three,” he added.
Huge news, but with the strikes still in full effect, it's probably going to be a while before we find out exactly what to expect from these movies and the creative teams involved.
"One thing we need to touch on involves the strike in Hollywood involving actors and writers," English continued. "And it's due to that that we cannot make any announcements today on that front. Some may ask, "Does this perhaps infer that there's going to be a universe being launched of Warrior Nun, which could expand into films and TV series following characters that we already know?" The answer to that question is yes. And there will be more details in the future."
"Warrior Nun revolves around the story of a 19-year-old woman who wakes up in a morgue with a new lease on life and a divine artefact embedded in her back. She discovers she is now part of the ancient Order of the Cruciform Sword that has been tasked with fighting demons on Earth, and powerful forces representing both heaven and hell want to find and control her."
