OBI-WAN KENOBI: How Much Of James Earl Jones' Voice As Darth Vader Are We Hearing In The Series?

While James Earl Jones is credited as voicing Darth Vader in Obi-Wan Kenobi, a new report suggests that the Respeecher technology used in The Book of Boba Fett may have lent a helping hand. Check it out!

The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett made use of highly advanced technology in order to bring Luke Skywalker back to our screens, with a combination of de-ageing VFX, Deepfake, and Respeecher used to achieve that effect. The latter is actually a voice synthesizer that made it so Mark Hamill sounded as he did when the original Star Wars trilogy was filmed.

After all, voices change over the years, and in Hamill's case, he's now 70 years old. What this means is that the voice we heard in The Book of Boba Fett was, essentially, not real.

It's pretty mind-blowing, and when Inverse (via SFFGazette.com) caught up with Respeecher founder Alex Serdiu, they got some insights into how the process works. "In general, there are two approaches to synthesize a voice," he explains. "The one the most well known and would be text to speech like an Alexa speaker or Siri. What we do obviously isn’t like that."

"We can’t synthesize a performance. That means that someone should be saying the lines that are needed to be converted into a target voice." So, Hamill - or perhaps even another actor - delivers a basic vocal performance and then Respeecher changes that so it sounds like a young Luke Skywalker. In this case, countless hours of audio from the movies and even audiobooks were used in order to teach their A.I. how to talk like the character.

With Respeecher also credited for Obi-Wan Kenobi (starting with the third episode), the site wondered whether their technology has also been used for Darth Vader. James Earl Jones certainly sounds a lot more youthful in the show than he did in 2016's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and at 91, we don't know how active he is as a performer these days.

"I can’t say yes or no on James Earl Jones," Serdiuk quickly responded, adding there are "lots of secrets still with Obi-Wan Kenobi. But we were uploading data packets [for Obi-Wan Kenobi] to Skywalker Sound when the invasion [of Ukraine] began."

It sounds like they did work on the show, but are currently unable to comment. Jones may well have recorded the lines so his performance shines through, though we can't help but wonder whether that might have been Hayden Christensen's doing with his voice before it was swapped out for this A.I. version of Jones/Vader. Hopefully, a future "Gallery" special will clear things up.

@FTWSFFGazette - James Earl Jones is Darth Vader. Hayden is not, and a bad actor

@MILESSPIDERMAN - technically speaking James Earl Jones is only the voice of Darth Vader.
Many people have physically been Darth Vader.

He's credited on four of the episodes, must mean he's getting a check still, and that's good enough for me.

Both imdb.com and Wikipedia mention James Earl Jones as part of the cast.

But until we hear it officially, it's not official.

Seems like it was already reported that the voice is AI generated

There are a few voice apps like that, but it's not available to the public. Apparently with some of them, you can speak in real time with someone else's voice. Scary, but awesome.

What happened to good old fashion voice acting? Pretty sure you could get a pretty perfect imitator to do this job.

Just get an impersonator! I can deal with a voice that sounds slightly different, but I can't deal with a stilted sounding non-performance.

It's clearly a voice synthesizer, James Earl Jones sounded nothing like that in 'Rogue One' (2016). He sounded old, tired and weak. The line 'an Imperial facility openly attacked?' was terrible.

Now he sounds younger and better in 'Obi-Wan' but some words feel like off, carefully chosen or obviously copied from previous audio recordings by the I.A. I guess it's okay because Darth Vader IS actually a robot talking through a voice synthesizer in the mask. But I don't think a whole movie could be done with that technology.

@Unconforming - Vader in 'Rogue One' sounded incredibly tired and out of breath and really different than he ever did in 'Rebels' or even 'Revenge of the Sith'. It was the voice of a very old man - which is true as James Earl Jones was 85 - but Vader was supposed to be in his prime. I'm glad they gave him here the more high-pitched voice he had in 'A New Hope'.

Somewhat technically, we are hearing about 100% of his voice since he as Vader is who we hear when we hear it.

@marvel72 - If he gets a credit, he gets paid. Also he probably got a healthy licensing fee for those “data packets” from the outset.

Who cares Star Wars died when Lucas sold it to Disney.
Spock0Clock
Spock0Clock - 6/20/2022, 5:12 AM
@McMurdo - Star Wars died when Lucas decided to do a series of prequels to fill in backstories that didn't need explaining. And before that, Star Wars died when Lucas decided to cut his loose 5-film plan down to 3 movies because he was sick of the franchise, leaving the franchise fallow, with only dubiously canonical novels and video games to continue to brand.

Star Wars has died many times, and yet... somehow never dies.
