THE MANDALORIAN: Jon Favreau Confirms He Isn't Writing The Series With A Finale In Mind

The Mandalorian producer and writer Jon Favreau has confirmed season 4 won't be the series' last, while explaining that he's not currently working on the show with a finale in mind. Read on for details...

The Mandalorian launched alongside Disney+ in 2019 and blew Star Wars fans away. Alongside Andor, it's been hailed as the best story told by Lucasfilm during this current era, but how much of a future does the series actually have?

After that emotional season 2 finale, many fans wondered if that was where the story would end (especially with The Book of Boba Fett following in place of a third batch of episodes). Luckily, Din Djarin and Grogu quickly reunited, and we're now just days away from the show's return.

Doing the rounds to promote that, The Mandalorian showrunner Jon Favreau made it clear he's a long way from plotting out how this story ends, confirming season 4 will not be the last.

"I think the beauty of this is that it's a middle chapter of a much larger story," he tells Games Radar+ (via SFFGazette.com). "And though we'll have resolution over time with these characters, I think that how these characters fit into the larger scope and scale, but it's not like there's a finale that we're building to that I have in mind."

"Quite the contrary, I love for these stories to go on and on. And so these characters potentially could be with us for a while, and I really love telling stories in their voice, and I love the way the adventures unfold and I'm looking forward to doing much more."

The Mandalorian is very much filling the gaps between the original and sequel trilogies, and one popular theory suggests Din and Grogu will play a key role in stopping Emperor Palpatine's return to power (perhaps the bounty hunter and his ward are responsible for giving Supreme Leader Snoke that scar...).

The journeys of the Mandalorian through the Star Wars Galaxy continue in season 3. Once a lone bounty hunter, Din Djarin has reunited with Grogu. Meanwhile, the New Republic struggles to lead the Galaxy away from its dark history. The Mandalorian will cross paths with old allies and make new enemies as he and Grogu continue their journey together.

The series stars Pedro Pascal, Katee Sackhoff, Carl Weathers, Amy Sedaris, Emily Swallow and Giancarlo Esposito. The directors of the eight-episode season 3 include Rick Famuyiwa, Rachel Morrison, Lee Isaac Chung, Carl Weathers, Peter Ramsey, and Bryce Dallas Howard.

Favreau is the showrunner/head writer and serves as an executive producer along with Dave Filoni, Rick Famuyiwa, Kathleen Kennedy and Colin Wilson. Karen Gilchrist and Carrie Beck are co-executive producers.

The Mandalorian season 3 premieres on March 1.

This show is FAR better than most of the MCU Disney+ shows.

Adults and kids alike can enjoy this while they actively try to forget the last horrible Star Wars trilogy.

@SonOfAGif - better than Loki, think we had this convo before, I didn’t find Loki good, just decent. Outside of the finale I just found it decent. Now I agree it’s the best MCU show.

Disney is probably not gonna pull the plug on this anytime soon anyway, but I do still think they shouldn't let it go on longer than necessary.

They managed to create two beloved characters, so they could do so again. No need to go on so long and risk that the viewers' (emotional) connection to them decreases because we keep spending time with them.

@bkmeijer1 - Yeah I’d say 4-5 seasons is the max they should run it for.

@bkmeijer1 - This was the reason I got Disney Plus, well the Marvel shows as well but we all know how they turned out.

@marvel72 - I'm still enjoying the majority of those shows, but I don't have D+ because of it. I'll get a month every now and then to catch up

@bkmeijer1 - too late. They gave Grogu the most asinine binary choice of all time from the one jedi who beat that system with his compassion.

I'm sure that'll work out well.

That's not inherently wrong, so long as they know when to stop. Breaking Bad did it so beautifully; story first, not the cash grab.

You don't have to have an ending, especially for a TV show but you have to you know where it's headed. I don't think the show has enough of a direction. It's stagnating. Baby Yoda storyline shoudl've been finished but they went back into that well.

@EgoEgor - retconning Grogu training to be a jedi should tell you all you need to know. They don't think they can tell a compelling story without the cute Yoda doll in the majority of scenes. That decision alone has me weary. For good reason too. I think it says alot...

This is why the show is shit. It's nostalgia bait with bad acting, bad choreography and a nothing story that'll be drawn out until the lead is too old to put the suit on.

Rip star wars.

You always need an end dumbass. example, Mr Robot. If he didn't have the ending figured out, it would have sucked! This isn't a daytime soap opera that's supposed to keep going.

It's interesting that hitman with child is such a popular subgenre. I can't think of many examples that people disliked.

I hope Jon has some endgame in mind. Leave willingly before being asked.

Not a good idea. You should always have at least a general idea of how it's gonna end.

Well, no end point in sight isn’t the greatest thing to hear. Far too many shows over stay their welcome when they don’t need to.

Far be it from me to criticize Jon Favreau, he has achieved so much more than I ever will BUT the way I see it it’s always good to have an endpoint in mind for a TV Show.
Especially with so many spin-offs around.

Im a big believer in the 6x4 concept.
Conceptualize a beginning, middle and end over the course of 4 seasons with 6 episodes each.
If the show is a success you can always attach another 6x4 to it.
But always have an ending prepared to not leave your audience hanging on a cliffhanger as so many shows have been doing and still are (looking at you Netflix).

There's a way of thinking I have come accustomed to and it really helps with avoiding or getting out of shows now before they turn to complete crap. It is "If they don't care about the story then I won't either".

It's clear here they aren't telling a story they are simply making content for their streaming service and hoping this will act as a bridge to the sequels and people will accept and then start to love them. It's flawed thinking and moronic. Any road leading to the sequels is one that ends in a garbage dump.
