The Mandalorian launched alongside Disney+ in 2019 and blew Star Wars fans away. Alongside Andor, it's been hailed as the best story told by Lucasfilm during this current era, but how much of a future does the series actually have?
After that emotional season 2 finale, many fans wondered if that was where the story would end (especially with The Book of Boba Fett following in place of a third batch of episodes). Luckily, Din Djarin and Grogu quickly reunited, and we're now just days away from the show's return.
Doing the rounds to promote that, The Mandalorian showrunner Jon Favreau made it clear he's a long way from plotting out how this story ends, confirming season 4 will not be the last.
"I think the beauty of this is that it's a middle chapter of a much larger story," he tells Games Radar+ (via SFFGazette.com). "And though we'll have resolution over time with these characters, I think that how these characters fit into the larger scope and scale, but it's not like there's a finale that we're building to that I have in mind."
"Quite the contrary, I love for these stories to go on and on. And so these characters potentially could be with us for a while, and I really love telling stories in their voice, and I love the way the adventures unfold and I'm looking forward to doing much more."
The Mandalorian is very much filling the gaps between the original and sequel trilogies, and one popular theory suggests Din and Grogu will play a key role in stopping Emperor Palpatine's return to power (perhaps the bounty hunter and his ward are responsible for giving Supreme Leader Snoke that scar...).
The journeys of the Mandalorian through the Star Wars Galaxy continue in season 3. Once a lone bounty hunter, Din Djarin has reunited with Grogu. Meanwhile, the New Republic struggles to lead the Galaxy away from its dark history. The Mandalorian will cross paths with old allies and make new enemies as he and Grogu continue their journey together.
The series stars Pedro Pascal, Katee Sackhoff, Carl Weathers, Amy Sedaris, Emily Swallow and Giancarlo Esposito. The directors of the eight-episode season 3 include Rick Famuyiwa, Rachel Morrison, Lee Isaac Chung, Carl Weathers, Peter Ramsey, and Bryce Dallas Howard.
Favreau is the showrunner/head writer and serves as an executive producer along with Dave Filoni, Rick Famuyiwa, Kathleen Kennedy and Colin Wilson. Karen Gilchrist and Carrie Beck are co-executive producers.
The Mandalorian season 3 premieres on March 1.
