STAR WARS: CLONE WARS Original Asajj Ventress Actress Grey Griffin Discusses A Possible Return (Exclusive)

Talking to us about her role as Kitana in Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms, Grey Griffin reflects on being part of Genndy Tartakovsky's Clone Wars and possibly returning as Asajj Ventress...

Asajj Ventress became a recurring character in The Clone Wars, but we first met her in Genndy Tartakovsky's critically acclaimed Star Wars: Clone Wars series way back in 2003. While that show is no longer considered canon, there are many fans who would like to see it revisited in some form, especially now it's been added to Disney+ (a decision that was long overdue).

Of course, Nika Futterman played Asajj in The Clone Wars, but it was legendary voice actress Grey Griffin (Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms) who first brought her to life.

While we had the Scooby-Doo veteran on the phone recently, we had to ask if she'd be open to reprising the role in some form, especially as her Asajj's story has never been concluded in canon. "I would adore that. I am happy with the Asajj I got to play, though, just because I’m such a fan of Genndy Tartakovsky," she explained. "He’s such a genius and allowed me to be part of so many of his wonderful creations, including something that’s coming up. I can’t say what it is yet, but he’s got a project in the works I’ve got a nice part in. I’m just glad he still continues to believe in me."

"That’s my favourite Star Wars property. I don’t know, maybe I’m just partial to it because I was in it, but I just thought it was so beautiful. The original Clone Wars he did for Cartoon Network was so graphic and beautiful. It’s funny because our scripts were only like three pages long and I was like, ‘Wait, how long is this cartoon? 11 minutes, right? I only have three lines!’ [Laughs] It was just so gorgeous, it’s mostly animation and there’s not a lot of talking. It’s the same with Samurai Jack. There were these really short scripts and then you would just see this gorgeous animation."

"Anyway, I am pleased with my Asajj, but I also get to be part of the Star Wars world all the time," Grey noted, referencing her more recent roles. "I do Maz Kanata and I play all sorts of different things in that universe and always have a toe dipped into it. I’m in The Bad Batch as a few different little things, but they always throw me a bone here or there for which I’m grateful [Laughs]. My Asajj was in my favourite Star Wars property ever, so I’m glad about that. I’m open to more!"

While we're sure that Disney would likely enlist Futterman to finish Asajj's in-canon story, it would be phenomenal to see Grey and the rest of the original Clone Wars cast return for another batch of episodes. Ultimately, that could hinge on those Disney+ viewing numbers, so make sure to check them out if you haven't already.

We'll have our full interview with Grey to share with you here very soon. Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms is available now on 4K/Blu-ray & Digital!

This might be controversial but I always felt Asajj was the most badass character in the original show but was really watered down in 3D show. Still cool but the Genndy Tartakovsky shows was just on another level imo

2D Clone Wars is still the best Clone Wars, though obviously Filoni's series is awesome too.

2D CW isn't canon anymore? How did that come? And how did Anakin get his scare then? 2D SW showed that but since that doesn't count anymore 🤷

@AnungUnRama - The events of 2003 clone wars, are mentioned in season 7 of clone wars. The only thing that isn't canon is the cave stuff. Which is a shame, but no big loss.

@PsychoBatemen - So the article is wrong then!? The article states regarding 2003 CW: "While that show is no longer considered canon...". Hence I was irritated.

Thanks for the clarification.

Such a cool character,I am surprised she hasn't been used in a movie or Disney Plus show.

Her character was a beast. Would be cool if they gave her some material from the novels to work with.
