This weeks Bates Motel shows Norman taking up taxidermy, Norma's feud with the mysterious guest, and Norman's teachers noticing something weird about him. At the end, Norma goes up to her room and finds a decaying corpse in her bed. This episode has some great character development and some very cool plot development. I am enjoying this new storyline much more than the previous storyline involving Norma's relationship with the cop.
Let's start off with Norman's new hobby. While that is not the main focus of this episode, it is significant to me. Anybody who has seen the original film knows how much Norman loves taxidermy. That idea is carried throughout the sequels and has remained a constant part of his character. To me, it seems that Norman is becoming more and more like the person we see in the original film. I am really enjoying how we see Norman change as a character throughout this series. It is a very interesting plotline and I'm excited to see where it goes.
Now on to Norma's feud with the guest. She kicks him out of the motel after suspecting that he is up to something illegal. This fits in with the cliffhanger ending of her finding the corpse in her bed. In the preview for episode nine, it is implied that this is the way that the man is tormenting her. Episode nine and ten have the potential to have some very creepy, horror movie moments. Although it is not implied at all, I am thinking, could this man be the same killer who was killing people in the first few episodes? I said it before, could he be the one who inspires Norman to kill? I think this new plotline is a very fun and interesting one, and the show is beginning to have the same tone as the original film.
And last but certainly not least, the scenes where Norman's teacher begins to notice his instability. They recommend for him to see a psychiatrist, and Norma accompanies him. The psychiatrist notices that Norma has problems as well, but she refuses to recognize that. She then storms out. The fact that people are beginning to notice something wrong with Norman shows to me that he's becoming more and more unstable. I also enjoy the fact that Norma does not want anybody analyzing her or Norman. Perhaps she knows that there is something wrong with her? She certainly must recognize that Norman is definitely not in his right mind. This episode had some fantastic plot and character development shown in these scenes.
So all in all a great, exciting episode filled with some interesting character and plot development. I am excited for the last two episodes and will definitely keep watching the show.
