VENOM Director Ruben Fleischer Says The Movie Definitely Lays The Groundwork For Sequels

We know that Woody Harrelson will be making a cameo appearance in Venom before taking on a larger role in sequels and the movie's director now confirms that his movie does indeed lay some groundwork...

We still don't know a whole lot about Venom but with Riot now confirmed as the movie's lead villain, it's clear that Carnage is being saved for somewhere down the line. It's widely believed that Woody Harrelson will play Cletus Kasady, especially as the actor has previously said that he makes a brief appearance to set the stage for future instalments and it does sound like we're getting some teases.

During a recent interview, director Ruben Fleischer was asked if the movie sets the stage for where Eddie Brock goes next in Sony's Spider-Man-less "Spider-Verse" and replied: "We’ve definitely laid some groundwork for different directions that the franchise could go but obviously it all hinges on people’s excitement about this film. I hope people will stay and see what seeds have been planted."

In other words, if Venom is a critical and commercial disappointment, you can kiss goodbye to the symbiote taking on Carnage in the sequel! We'll just have to wait and see how the movie turns out but there's a lot of negativity right now which will hopefully be proved wrong this October. What do you guys think? Don't let this quote distract you from the fact that they still haven't revealed who Woody Harrelson is playing...

My bet is Cletus Kasady... That's the potential sequel setup

On one hand I’m kinda excited to see this movie, but yet I keep telling myself slow down it’s made by Sony and Ari Avad is involved.

That’s such bs. All anyone wanted to see is Venom vs Carnage and they probably didn’t include him in this one to string people along for a sequel. Sony sucks.

I'm still salty about the fact spider-man isn't in this universe but I'll have to get over it. I feel like if it is successful enough for a sequel, it will give us the carnage we deserve especially if Woody is playing Kassidy. Carnage is a character that needs the R rating.

the way I see it, hoping it bombs so Sony can give up their anti spiderman universe, but on the other hand if its REALLY good then it'll be bittersweet.

just hope Venom is good. If it is, Carnage will be the sequel's villain, if he doesn't appear in Venom

Kind of obvious to once again have the corporate bad guy become the antagonist of the (anti) hero. I feel like this is done in a lot of these films (ant-man, iron-man, etc) BTW, are they shoving this "anti-hero" thing down our throats or what? I mean they actually use the anti-hero label in the damn trailer. If they have to actually spell out to the audience that Venom's an "anti-hero" because they won't be able to figure that out on their own, I think that's an indication of how studios regard audiences.

"Sequels"

Idk how many of these you can make without the absence of Spiderman steadily becoming more and more of a vexation

@BlackBeltJones - The character outgrew Spiderman almost 30 years ago, he will be fine.

"Rob Liefeld confirms that Venom movie will be doing what all blockbusters do." Great article. Top tier journalism, really.

The comic origin is already screwed so if Venom performs well, maybe in the sequel or God-forbid, the 3rd, they could introduce Tom's Spidey and have the symbiote branch off in pieces to him, setting up a Venom vs. Black Suit Spidey fight. Spidey wins, humiliates him due to influence from the suit, leaving Venom in his classic Spider-Man-Hatred state.

That's not what I want to here right off the bat. Focus in this first and then maybe once this is successful focus in sequels
