MGM & Warner Bros have finally found a director to helm their upcoming Tomb Raider reboot. According to THR, Norwegian filmmaker Roar Uthaug will attempt to kickstart a franchise starring popular video game character Lara Croft (who last featured in the largely unsuccessful 2001 & 2003 movies starring Angelina Jolie). Earlier this year, Uthaug helmed the disaster drama The Wave, which seems to have drawn a mixed response on the festival circuit.
Regardless of how critics felt, the studio must be a big fan of his work to trust him with a property like this. He'll possibly be joined by Geneva Robertson-Dworet, who is in negotiations to pen the reboot's screenplay. Robertson-Dworet wrote the 2010 black-listed script, Hibernation. Crucially, she will boast some blockbuster experience after she finishes co-writing Transformers 5.
This news may come across as disappointing to many fans of the franchise, after rumors recently surfaced linking a number of high profile female directors to the project (including Zero Dark Thirty's Kathryn Bigelow). What do you think of these choices? Are you surprised they went for lesser known talent? Leave your thoughts in the comments below!
